Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: German-Americans make up one of the largest ethnic groups in the United States, yet their very success at assimilating has also made them one of the least visible. Contented among Strangers examines the central role German-speaking women in rural areas of the Midwest played in preserving their ethnic and cultural identity. Even while living far from their original homelands, these women applied traditional European patterns of rural family life and values to their new homes in Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska. As a result they were more content with their modest lives than were their Anglo-American counterparts. Through personal recollections--including interesting diary material translated by the author, church and community documents, and migration and census data--Pickle reveals the diversity and richness of the women's experiences.

Book excerpt: In Immigrants on the Hill, Gary Mormino traces the Hill's evolution from its roots in Lombardy and Sicily to contemporary times, focusing on those institutions that have sustained and nurtured the community. He reveals how, in work, play, religion, politics, and even bootlegging, Hill Italian-Americans have consistently encouraged ethnic pride, working-class solidarity, and family honor. His study, now with a new preface, shows why this ethnic enclave has garnered national attention.

Book excerpt: Much of the library literature pertaining to early American library development ignores or minimizes library development and support for libraries within ethnic groups. The records of such groups are often not in English, frequently handwritten, and generally not accessible. The archives of the American Turners and some of the individual Turner groups provide a unique opportunity to study primary materials related to an influential and large German-American organization. The American Turners have always supported a combination of cultural and physical fitness programs. They were also considered a politically radical group in their earlier years because the members strongly and vocally supported liberal causes such as anti-slavery platforms. The German immigrants sought to pursue their ideals in their adopted homeland since the German Turners' political aspirations were suppressed after the failed Revolution of 1848 in Germany. A close examination of the role of libraries in the American Turners provided an important case study for the role of libraries and reading in ethnic groups during a period of major immigration to the United States, 1850 to 1918.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Missouri is well-known for its German American heritage, but the story of nineteenth-century German immigrant abolitionists is often neglected in discussions of the state’s history. This collection of ten original essays (with a foreword by renowned Missouri historian Gary Kremer), relates what unfolded when idealistic Germans, many of whom were highly educated and devoted to the ideals of freedom and democracy, left their homeland and settled in a pre–Civil War slave state. Fleeing political persecution during the 1830s and 1840s, immigrants such as Friedrich Münch, Eduard Mühl, Heinrich Boernstein, and Arnold Krekel arrived in the area now known as the Missouri German Heritage Corridor in hopes of finding a land more congenial to their democratic ideals. When they witnessed the state of enslaved Blacks, many of them became abolitionist activists and fervent supporters of Abraham Lincoln and the Union in the emerging Civil War. Editor Sydney Norton and the other contributing authors to Fighting for a Free Missouri explore the Germans’ abolitionist mission, their relationships with African Americans, and their activity in the radical wing of the Republican Party.
