Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Preparatory German Reader for Beginners Much of the reading material ordinarily presented to beginners in German consists of popular fairy tales sometimes even of translations or adaptations from other languages. It has seemed to the author that teachers might prefer simple and graded prose, referring to the life of Germany, allowing at least a glimpse at the history of the country, and telling something about a few of its most illustrious sons. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A German Reader for Beginners The purpose of this book is to provide for the beginner in German easy and interesting selections which can be used profitably with the first lessons in the language. The place of such an introductory book cannot well be taken by short stories or plays or other simple texts, for even the easiest of them are not suitable for the earliest reading. They present difficulties of thought, style, and vocabulary, which either discourage the beginner or rob his study of most of its interest. Something simpler and more carefully graded is needed as an introduction to such texts, so that they may be eventually read with that sense of mastery which adds new zest to each day's work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from German Reader for Beginners Tm: object in compiling this new German Reader was to give to those who begin the study of the German language, such selections fiom German literature as might prove easy enough for their first attempts at translating, and at the same time of sufficient interest in themselves. It was therefore thought best to take pieces of a narrative character, presenting each a complete story, and to arrange them according to their respective difficulties, without at tempting to classify them, either with reference to the periods of German literature to which their authors belong, or ao cording to their subject and form. However desirable a book compiled. On either of these plans would have been for the student of the history of German literature, it would not have been adapted to the purpose intended. To make a high school class study the whole of German grammar in less than a year is a crime; and two years are very much better than one year. The following arrangement of time and work has been. Found very effective for the average class and the average chapter of grammar (some of the more difficult chapters will require a slower pace) monday: Review of last week's work. The teacher explains (as far as possible, in German) a new text and assigns it for reading (with the help of the Special Vocabularies and Notes). Tuesday: The text is read in class; fluent reading is insisted upon. German questions, similar to those in Part II, are answered in German, with the books open; new grammatical features are explained (in English, when necessary). Assignment: Practise the text and read the corresponding Lesson practising a text means reading and re - reading it aloud, until the student is able to answer the German questions in Part II by heart. Wednesday: German questions (not necessarily those in Part II, but of a similar nature) are answered in Ger man with the books closed. The new grammatical mate rial is practised (declensions and conjugations with the help of whole sentences rather than detached paradigms). Assignment: Prepare Drill in Part II; write German answers to a selected number of the Questions. Thursday: The Drill work is practised (partly by writing on the blackboard); practice, as on the preced ing day, is repeated. Assignment: study the correspond ing grammar lesson; study the text for oral reproduction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from German Reader for Beginners: Deutschen Lesebuch Für Anfänger Tin present edition of the German Reader possesses several advantages over the first. It appears in German type, and is thus calculated to familiarize the learner with the character in which most German books are printed. It now contains a much greater quantity of matter, the size of the page having been enlarged, and some pages added. New pieces have been substituted for some of those contained in the first edition, the change having been suggested by the experience of the compiler of the work in using it as a class-book in the University. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A German Method for Beginners The advantages of this plan are obvious. The stories are consecutive, and the pupil feels that he is really reading. With the exercises correlated, he can see the system by which he advances; while in syntax the advantages of seeing the relation of forms and rules to one another are too great to need more than passing mention. Any one of the first three parts of the book may be taken by itself. The sto ries may be read before the exercises or syntax are attacked; the exercises can be used by those who need German compo sition or teachers who favor rules from the start can begin with Part III. It is believed to be a mistake to confine the pupil during the first year to short, arbitrarily arranged word lists, which must be memorized before they are used. For this reason the vocabulary is arranged alphabetically at the end of the volume. The book begins with a piece of connected prose so simple that the pupil can read it easily as soon as he has learned his letters from Part III. It is a story of the school-room, which lends itself readily to the use of the object method. The vocabulary is limited to every-day words, which constant repetition fixes in the pupil's memory. The style is easy and natural. The author is careful to avoid the puerilities. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from German Reader for Beginners: Based on Fairy Tales The Marchen has two primary qualifications that make it useful for elementary reading: its style and its con tent. The language is that of everyday life; and, as the editor of this little reader has not hesitated to remove obsolete and dialectic phrases, it is his belief that these stories appear in the ordinary language of to-day, and present a vocabulary that Will be useful both in future reading and in conversation. As to content, this is surely as interesting as that of any story that can be told in the limited vocabulary and simple constructions demanded in elementary work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A German Grammar for Beginners: Adapted From Lange's German Method IN beginning German, most teachers use simple stones in connection with thd grammar drill. Difficulties arise from the necessity of learning two vocabularies, as well as from the lack of correlation between the Stories and the grammar. In this book the commonest words of the reading form the vocabulary of the exercises, thus maintaining interest and allowing more time for grammar work. The stories, taken from Lange' s German Method, were written expressly for this purpose. The first is about the school, the second about the home, thus giving the pupil at the outset familiar and usable words. These are mainly cognates, so that the, reading may be begun as soon as the German letters have been learned.
