Book Synopsis German Expressionist Painting by : Peter Selz
Download or read book German Expressionist Painting written by Peter Selz and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1957, German Expressionist Painting was the first comprehensive study of one of the most pivotal movements in the art of this century. When it was written, however, German Expressionism seemed like an eccentric manifestation far removed from what was then considered the mainstream of modern art. But as historians well know, each generation alters the concept of mainstream to encompass those aspects of the past which seem most relevant to the present. The impact of German Expressionism on the art and thought of later generations could never have been anticipated at the time of the original writing of this book. During the subsequent years an enormous body of scholarly research and an even larger number of popular books on German expressionist art has been printed. Numerous monographs and detailed studies on most of the artists exist now and countless exhibitions with accompanying catalogues have taken place. Much of this new research could have been incorporated in a revised edition and the bibliography certainly could have been greatly expanded to include the important writings which have been published in Germany, the United States and elsewhere since this book was originally issued. The author, however, was faced with the choice of reprinting the original text with only the most necessary alterations-such as updating the captions to indicate present locations of the paintings-or the preparation of a revised text and bibliography. Desirable as a revision appeared, present printing costs would have priced the paperback out of reach for students. It is for this reason that I decided to reissue the original text which stands on its own as a primary investigation of German Expressionist Painting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An indispensable anthology that immediately renders its predecessors obsolete. With its gathering of public and private documents, it carries us through the rise and fall of one of the great upheavals of modern art."—Robert Rosenblum, New York University "These essays, including many previously unavailable in English, are rich with startling new insights into the German Expressionist psyche. Elucidating the artists' view of government, the role of women in modern society, and their own ambivalence about the effectiveness of abstract art, this anthology is essential reading for all scholars and students of twentieth-century art."—Joan Marter, author of Alexander Calder

Book Synopsis Abstract Expressionism by : David Anfam
Download or read book Abstract Expressionism written by David Anfam and published by Royal Academy Books. This book was released on 2016-11-08 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1946 the art critic Robert Coates, writing in the New Yorker, first used the term 'Abstract Expressionism'. The two words combine the emotional intensity of the German Expressionists with the anti-figurative aesthetic of the European Abstract schools. Although they were being painted by then little-known artists working in low-rent studio space, works of Abstract Expressionist art now dominate the walls of major museums. The last major collective Abstract Expressionism exhibition to have taken place in the UK occurred in 1959. This important publication, and the exhibition it accompanies, seek to redress the balance and re-evaluate the movement, recognising its complex and fluid reality, and branching further into multimedia. As such, this book encompasses sculptors such as David Smith and photographers such as Aaron Siskind as well as some of the most famous painters of the twentieth century, including Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, Franz Kline, Arshile Gorky and Clyfford Still. AUTHOR: David Anfam is the author of the now-standard textbook Abstract Expressionism (1990). Susan Davidson is Senior Curator, Collections and Exhibitions, at the Soloman R. Guggenheim Museum, New York. Edith Devaney is Curator of Contemporary Projects at the Royal Academy of Arts. Jeremy Lewison is former Director of Collections at Tate. Carter Ratcliff wrote Fate of a Gesture: Jackson Pollock and Postwar American Art (1996). Christian Wurst was researcher on The Catalogue Raisonné of the Drawings of Jasper Johns (forthcoming). SELLING POINTS: * Accompanies the first major exhibition of Abstract Expressionism in the UK since 1959 * Works of Abstract Expressionist art dominate the walls of major museums around the world * Features an impressive range of experts who discuss some of the signature paintings of the movement 300 colour

Book Synopsis Expressionism in Germany and France by : Timothy O. Benson
Download or read book Expressionism in Germany and France written by Timothy O. Benson and published by Prestel Pub. This book was released on 2014 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking examination of the cultural exchange between early 20th century French and German artists illuminates new ways of understanding the development of Expressionism. Although the Expressionist movement is widely considered to have arisen out of a German aesthetic, it was actually as much a result of German artists' exposure to artists living and working in France, such as van Gogh, Seurat, Gauguin, Cezanne, Matisse, Picasso, and Braque. In fact, in its early days, Expressionism was assigned no specific nationality at all. This fascinating book focuses on the key exhibitions, galleries, and museum directors that helped disseminate styles and techniques of revolutionary French artists throughout Germany. Included here are French masterpieces seen not only by German artists in Paris but also in important galleries, exhibitions, and private collections in Berlin, Dresden, Munich, Weimar, and other cities. More than 100 paintings and works on paper are grouped to encourage an understanding of artistic influence and interchange. The volume also reflects new scholarship on issues of French-German relations and contributes to our understanding of the ways the visual arts are influenced by ideas of national identity and cultural heritage."
