Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part Two presents the train of argument leading to the establishment of precise genealogical connections between the several Bernards. The reliable affiliation of Count Bernard (I) of Auvergne as brother of Count Isembard of Autun supports a cogent case for the existence of a fundamental law of hereditary succession in French counties of the ninth century. Further material pertaining directly to comital succession in the context of the Bernards then follows.

Book excerpt: A presentation of the fundamental constitution that preceded dynastic feudalism, with source materials pertaining to ninth-century France, and a consideration of the methods best suited for achieving significant insight, in particular in the reconstruction of aristocratic genealogical relationships. This study finds that the essential office of count invariably was inherited, ideally according to proximity and primogeniture, with the king and the aristocracy acting as a corporation to admit specific and well-understood variations to basic hereditary principles in a sophisticated juristic environment.

Book Synopsis The Reception of Grabbe's Hannibal in the German Theatre by : Margaret Anne Sutherland
Download or read book The Reception of Grabbe's Hannibal in the German Theatre written by Margaret Anne Sutherland and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 1984 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After publication in 1835, Grabbe's Hannibal was overlooked by the theatre until this century. Because the drama does not lend itself easily to stage production, a number of adaptations were printed: these are analysed and their merits and shortcomings evaluated. The history of all productions is then viewed against the background of Germany's political and cultural history from 1918 to 1958, examining in detail the approaches of such producers as Jessner, Martin, Schmitt and Schalla and their audience impact. This analysis in turn sheds light on essential qualities of Hannibal.

Book Synopsis Legendary Rivals: Collegiality and Ambition in the Tales of Early Rome by : Jaclyn Neel
Download or read book Legendary Rivals: Collegiality and Ambition in the Tales of Early Rome written by Jaclyn Neel and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-10-23 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Legendary Rivals Jaclyn Neel argues for a new interpretation of the foundation myths of Rome. Instead of a negative portrayal of the city’s early history, these tales offer a didactic paradigm of the correct way to engage in competition. Accounts from the triumviral period stress the dysfunctional nature of the city’s foundation to capture the memory of Rome’s civil wars. Republican evidence suggests a different emphasis. Through diachronic analyses of the tales of Romulus and Remus, Amulius and Numitor, Brutus and Collatinus, and Camillus and Manlius Capitolinus, Neel shows that Romans of the Republic and early Principate would have seen these stories as examples of competition that pushed the bounds of propriety.
