Il s'ouvre - tout naturellement - sur une revue des modalités d'émergence de l'idée de paysage, dans les domaines de l'art, des sciences de la nature, de la géographie et de l'aménagement du cadre de vie ; puis, cette présentation est étendue aux conceptions et aux méthodes de travail qui en ont résulté. Celles-ci se répartissent suivant un gradient, qui va de la domination de l'objectivité à celle de la subjectivité. La "science du paysage" de la géographie physique soviétique est à l'un de ces pôles : ses entités paysagères sont conçues comme complexes matériels réglés par la thermodynamique. C'est dans ce contexte, qu'est né le concept de "géosystème", qui a parfois supplanté la notion de paysage. En position moyenne, biocentriques, mais aussi déjà anthropocentriques, les approches dans la mouvance de l'« écologie du paysage » touchent à la fois milieux naturalistes, milieux géographiques, et stratégies d'aménagement, à l'Ouest comme à l'Est. Vers le pôle de la subjectivité, des écoles de pensée empruntent aux réflexions existentielles et phénoménologiques de certains courants de la géographie humaine, mais aussi aux soucis d'évaluation et de gestion du cadre de vie. Paysagistes d'aménagement, ou adeptes des géographies "de la perception" ou "des représentations mentales", plus fréquemment rencontrés dans le monde occidental, ajoutent des notions nouvelles - "territoires", "lieux" ou "espace vécu" - en concurrence avec le "paysage".

En appliquant aussi bien les méthodes classiques que celles développées dans cet ouvrage, nous avons obtenus des résultats : qui enrichissent les connaissances sur ce territoire ; qui offrent une nouvelle perspective sur la dynamique fonctionnelle et spatio-temporelle de ses composantes ; qui confirment des acquis précédents ; et qui permettent de tracer des limites géographiques plus précises. En même temps, les développements conceptuels et méthodologiques (et les résultats) présentés dans ce travail ouvrent des vois nouvelles pour des recherches futures sur la Plaine collinaire Jijia - Baseu et peuvent être utilisés avec succès à l'étude d'autres espaces géographiques.

En nous appuyant sur nos travaux aux interfaces de la paléogéographie et de la biogéographie, de l'histoire des paysages et celle des usages, nous montrons qu'un tel travail est de plein pied dans les interrogations émanant de nos sociétés sur l'environnement, le patrimoine naturel, la biodiversité ou le développement. Les paysages végétaux, l'étude de leur genèse et de leurs dynamiques, constituent le fil conducteur de l'ensemble des travaux, synthétisés en trois chapitres : 1)Une contribution à la paléophytogéographie et à la biogéographie historique.2 )Les paysages végétaux en tant qu'héritage :les cas des géosystèmes méditerranéens de l'Afrique du Nord et des savanes en Afrique de l'Ouest. 3)Vers une valorisation dans une géographie active. Le déroulement du raisonnement scientifique vise à montrer le lien génétique entre la recherche fondamentale en géographie physique et les recherches tournées vers l'environnement. Les régions étudiées, méditerranéennes au Maghreb ou sahélo-soudano-guinnéennes en Afrique de l'Ouest, sont anciennement occupées, exploitées, investies par les sociétés. Celles-ci ont produit des vrais paysages culturels, ayant valeur de patrimoine. Dans de tels travaux on ne peut faire l'économie d'une interrogation approfondie sur notre conception de la nature et des rapports que les sociétés entretiennent avec elle. Il en résulte une nécessaire approche dialectique des questions environnementales et de la gestion des ressources dans un objectif de développement durable. Cette dernière problématique est illustrée par l'exemple des travaux en cours sur le Sahel mauritanien. En conclusion, il s'agit de montrer comment les paysages végétaux de l'Afrique du Nord-Ouest constituent une mémoire des milieux et des sociétés, représentant un riche patrimoine hérité, mais un patrimoine menacé.
