Book excerpt: Statistical analysis of Devonian shale gas production in the first year for wells in Roane, Wirt, and Calhoun Counties showed no significant differences among wells grouped by completion method and the number of strategraphic units completed. The number of wells may not have been sufficient to detect differences which are at most marginal. Decline curves for 95 wells in Lincoln, Logan, and Mingo Counties replicated the typical shape found by earlier workers, i.e. sharp initial decline and a leveling off to a slow decline. Maps of probabilities of success reveal areas in Wirt, Roane, and Calhoun Counties with favorable probabilities and low drilling densities; these areas may have high potential for gas production. A computer program to assign pay formations to specific Devonian shale units showed close to a 95% succes rate, successfully simulating the work of stratigrapher.

Book excerpt: This is the sixth contribution to the Computer Methods in the Geosciences series and it continues the tradition of being practical, germaine, and easy to read. Michael Hohn in his presentation, Geostatistics and Petroleum Geology, nicely compliments the other books in the series and brings to the readers some new techniques by which to analyze their data. New approaches always result in new ideas or enhancement of old ones. The French School of Geostatistiques (Fontainebleau, France) was founded and developed by Georges Matheron in response to problems in mining explo ration and exploitation. This approach has been used successfully in that industry since the mid-1960s, but only recently applied to similar problems in petroleum. Likewise, these applications have been successful in this applied field as well and here Hohn gives examples. Standard subjects of the field of geostatistics are explored and discussed-the semivariogram, kriging, cokriging, nonlinear and parametric estimation, and conditional simulation. These may be unrecognizable terms to the readers now, but upon completion of reading the book, they will be fimiliar ones. Each subject is discussed in detail with appropriate and pertinent case studies, taken from the author's own research or from the literature. The author notes the book is for working geologists in the petroleum industry.

Book excerpt: Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company was awarded a DOE contract in December 1977 for field retrieval and laboratory analysis of cores from the Devonian shales of the following eleven states: Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia. The purpose of this project is to explore these areas to determine the amount of natural gas being produced from the Devonian shales. The physical properties testing of the rock specimens were performed under subcontract at Michigan Technological University (MTU). The study also included LANDSAT information, geochemical research, structural sedimentary and tectonic data. Following the introduction, and background of the project this report covers the following: field retrieval procedures; laboratory procedures; geologic analysis (by state); references and appendices. Book excerpt: Log suites recorded in empty and liquid-filled boreholes have been analyzed from a total of seven wells in three states in the Appalachian Basin. Several techniques were attempted to identify gas and kerogen rich and naturally fractured intervals, including construction of resistivity and porosity overlays, calculation of Production Indices, analysis of temperature, bulk density compensation and Sibilation curves. The information extracted from the logs was compared to conventional core desorption (offgas), fracture and geochemical data as well as to computer-generated synergetic logs. A suite of empty borehole logs has been defined which will yield maximum formation evaluation data at a minimum cost.

Book excerpt: Activities are summarized for a program to determine the relationships between shale characteristics, hydrocarbon gas content, and well location to provide a sound basis for defining the productive capacity of the Eastern Devonian shale deposits and for guiding research, development, and demonstration projects to enhance the recovery of natural gas from the shale deposits. The program includes a number of elemental tasks as a part of the Resource Inventory and Shale Characterization subprojects of ERDA's Eastern Shale Project and is designed to provide large quantities of support data for that project. Approximately 1000 core samples of gas bearing Eastern Devonian shale will be examined in the program. After the characterization data for individual wells have been compiled, a regression-type analysis for pattern recognition will be performed to establish the interrelationship between the shale characteristics, the hydrocarbon gas content, and well locations from which the samples were obtained. A milestone chart depicting the planned progress on the various tasks is given, and the status of the sampling and characterization tasks are summarized. The program is approximately on schedule and the requirements set by the milestone chart will likely be met by the next quarterly report. Some unforeseen difficulties in certain characterization efforts and anomalies encountered in the data have caused unexpected delays. Most of these experimental difficulties, however, have been overcome and no serious problems are expected in future investigations.

Book excerpt: Shale samples from Allegany County, Pennsylvania (A-2) were analyzed and characterized with the objective of determining the relationships between the gas contents and shale characteristics. A total of 73 core samples were taken from this well (24 for Battelle and 49 for other DOE contractors). The A-2 well is characterized by its wide range of carbon (1.4 to 14.8%) and sulfur contents (0.2 to 8.0%). Mean value of hydrocarbon gas contents in these shales was found to be 0 to 30 v/v, with 0.24 and 0.35 lower and upper limits, respectively. No discernable relationship is found in the gas contents with shale depth. A-2 shales also appear to have very high surface areas (mean value of 9.22 m/sup 2//g) with bulk densities comparable to those from other locations. Helium permeabilities of samples measured were higher than those from other locations. Lithology of these shales did not differ greatly from shales of other locations.
