Book excerpt: "An avowed spinster at seventeen, beautiful Georgina Upcott's well-planned campaign to find a husband for her painfully shy elder sibling goes scandalously awry when she enlists the aid of the notorious rakehell Hugh Redvers, Earl of Rotham. For while championing the sisters' cause, handsome Rotham inadvertently pledges his troth to a very eligible lady of his class. Not a catastrophe to be sure ... until the hapless Earl realizes he is smitten with Georgina-hopelessly enamored by her charm, sparkling wit and breathtaking beauty. And now it will take all of Georgina's resourcefulness to undo the tangled knots she herself has tied-though the cost may be her sworn independence and her fragile, resistant heart."--(p.4) of cover

He sought to improve the nation's health and rebuild London, and famously amended the Education Act in 1870. His charismatic wife, Georgina, was also champion of diverse social and moral reforms, and friend to such worthies as John Ruskin, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Frances Power Cobbe and Mrs Oscar Wilde. In the first full-length biography of this distinguished couple, James Gregory explores the Cowper-Temples' roles within Whig-Liberalism, philanthropy and social reform, and provides a fascinating insight into the private lives of two aristocrats dedicated to using their powers of influence to alleviate problems in Victorian society.

Download or read book The 6 Relationships of Highly Effective Organizations written by Dale Harley and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2019-03-15 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is it that separates great organizations from average organizations? The simple answer is “relationships”, or more specifically, how organizations manage their relationships with their key stakeholders. Over the past thirty-five years as a business owner, consultant, communications instructor, media junky, politician, community activist and volunteer, Dale Harley has refined the Relationship Centered Model. In his new book, The Six Relationships of Highly Effective Organizations, he outlines how to harness and integrate an organizations’ client, media, investor, employee, community and government relations to maximize the long-term success and growth of organizations. In this informative and easy to read book, Dale examines these six key relationships that every organization (whether a private sector firm, public institution, or not for profit organization) must focus on to ensure their survival. After all, you are only as strong as your weakest relationship.
Book Synopsis Pollinators and Pesticides by : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Environmental Audit Committee
Download or read book Pollinators and Pesticides written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Environmental Audit Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2013-04-05 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If farmers had to pollinate fruit and vegetables without the help of insects it would cost hundreds of millions of pounds and we would all be stung by rising food prices. Defra Ministers, however, have refused to back EU efforts to protect pollinators. Disease, habitat loss and climate change can all affect insect populations, but a growing body of research suggests that neonicotinoids are having an especially damaging impact on pollinators. The weight of scientific evidence now warrants precautionary action, so the Committee is calling for a moratorium on pesticides linked to bee decline to be introduced by 1 January next year. An EU-wide moratorium on the use of imidacloprid, clothianidin and TMX on crops attractive to bees, following a recent risk warning from the European Food Safety Authority, has also been proposed. Many of the UK's largest garden retailers have voluntarily withdrawn non-professional plant protection products that contain neonicotinoids. A full ban on the sale of neonicotinoids for public domestic use, which could create an urban safe haven for pollinators is recommended. The pesticide industry must open itself to greater academic scrutiny if it wants to justify its continued opposition to the precautionary protection of pollinators. The Government's National Action Plan for the Sustainable Use of Pesticides published earlier this year was a missed opportunity, according to the Committee. Clearer targets are needed to reduce reliance on pesticides as far as possible. And Integrated Pest Management - which emphasises alternatives to pesticides, but does not preclude their use - should be made the central principle of the plan.
Book Synopsis Inside the Local Campaign by : Alex Marland
Download or read book Inside the Local Campaign written by Alex Marland and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2022-07-22 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inside the Local Campaign reveals what goes on in constituency campaigns during a Canadian election. For decades, the media has focused primarily on the national campaign and party leaders, and the practice of canvassing for votes by candidates and their supporters has been seen as more tradition than science. But things have evolved with digital media. Local-level campaigning is more fashionable – and critical for gathering data that can be used post-election. Using the 2021 federal campaign as an anchor, an impressive collection of authors and practitioners discusses local-level campaigning in electoral districts across the country, highlights local trends and on-the-ground roles, and discloses hidden details about how local campaigns are run.
Book Synopsis Women, Madness, and Spiritualism: Georgina Weldon and Louisa Lowe by : Roy Porter
Download or read book Women, Madness, and Spiritualism: Georgina Weldon and Louisa Lowe written by Roy Porter and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2003 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This set reproduces seminal writings by three exceptional nineteenth-century women. Georgina Weldon, Louisa Lowe and Susan Willis Fletcher were certified as insane by the Victorian medical establishment and were threatened with incarceration for their eccentric and transgressive behaviour. All three were remarkably resourceful and very successfully manipulated the sensationalist press to expose the 'lunacy laws' to the late-Victorian public. In doing this, they contributed to the emerging feminist critique of medicine and science. Each volume is devoted to the work of one of these exceptional women. New introductions by the editors and the late Roy Porter provide context and discussion of the pieces included, pointing to the themes and issues that they raise. With an extensive index, this collection provides an invaluable resource for those studying the role of feminism in the history of medicine and the power of the medical profession in the Victorian era.

Book Synopsis Out of the Shadows by : Emily Midorikawa
Download or read book Out of the Shadows written by Emily Midorikawa and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2021-05-11 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Queen Victoria's reign was an era of breathtaking social change, but it did little to create a platform for women to express themselves. But not so within the social sphere of the séance--a mysterious, lamp-lit world on both sides of the Atlantic, in which women who craved a public voice could hold their own. Out of the Shadows tells the stories of the enterprising women whose supposedly clairvoyant gifts granted them fame, fortune, and most important, influence as they crossed rigid boundaries of gender and class as easily as they passed between the realms of the living and the dead. The Fox sisters inspired some of the era’s best-known political activists and set off a transatlantic séance craze. While in the throes of a trance, Emma Hardinge Britten delivered powerful speeches to crowds of thousands. Victoria Woodhull claimed guidance from the spirit world as she took on the millionaires of Wall Street before becoming America’s first female presidential candidate. And Georgina Weldon narrowly escaped the asylum before becoming a celebrity campaigner against archaic lunacy laws. Drawing on diaries, letters, and rarely seen memoirs and texts, Emily Midorikawa illuminates a radical history of female influence that has been confined to the dark until now.
