Book excerpt: Georgia’s 24.4 million acres of forest are a diverse mix of hardwood and softwood tree species typical of the South. Hardwood forests account for 54.5percent of the forested area (which includes 1.3 percent in non-stocked) versus 45.5 percent for softwood types. Georgia’s forest resources are considerable and slightly decreasing from 2014 in terms of the number of trees ≥1.0 inch diameter at breast height. The rate at which the State gained forest land acreage from converted agricultural land increased until 2012 and then decreased slightly from 59.5 thousand acres to 34.9 thousand acres. The rate at which forest was lost to development decreased steadily since 2009 and has stayed relatively stable through 2019. There were 24.1 billion cubic feet of wood volume in softwoods and 23.4 billion cubic feet in hardwoods, for a total of 47.5 billion cubic feet. Several tree species in Georgia have serious health issues. Redbay and sassafras are affected by laurel wilt disease. Flowering dogwood shows a high rate of mortality, most likely due to several factors such as anthracnose. The emerald ash borer threatens native ash trees, and hemlocks are under attack from the hemlock woolly adelgid. Japanese honeysuckle is the most prevalent invasive nonnative plant in Georgia forests, followed by Chinese/European privets. Despite these threats to forest health, Georgia still has one of the strongest and most successful forestry programs in the South.

Book excerpt: Forest planners and managers have a continuing need for information about the timber resource, and the public is expressing increasing interest in the effects of logging. Therefore, up-to-date data on the Nation's forests-and how the forests are changing-are essential to well informed decisionmaking. Information about the condition of and changes in the timber resource of Georgia comes from three primary sources: (1) inventory plots, which describe current conditions and quantify changes due to mortality, growth, removals, and land use; (2) mill surveys, which quantify timber volume harvested and delivered to primary wood products facilities, i.e., sawmills, pulpmills, veneer mills, composite panel mills, and pole mills; and (3) logging utilization studies, which characterize harvest operations and quantify the timber volume that is cut and utilized, and that portion that is left in the forest.

Book excerpt: In 2009, industrial roundwood output from Georgia's forests totaled 1.05 billion cubic feet, 13 percent less than in 2007. Mill byproducts generated from primary manufacturers declined 29 percent to 292.4 million cubic feet. Almost all plant residues were used primarily for fuel and fiber products. Pulpwood was the leading roundwood product at 597.4 million cubic feet; saw logs ranked second at 309.5 million cubic feet; composite panels third at 57.9 million cubic feet. The number of primary processing plants was down from 168 in 2007 to 152 in 2009. Total receipts dropped from 1.22 billion cubic feet in 2007 to 1.05 billion cubic feet in 2009.

Book excerpt: From the lush forests of Appalachia to the frozen tundra of Alaska, and from the tallgrass prairies of the Midwest to the subtropical rainforests of Hawaii, the United States harbors a remarkable array of ecosystems. These ecosystems in turn sustain an exceptional variety of plant and animal life. For species such as salamanders and freshwater turtles, the United States ranks as the global center of diversity. Among the nation's other unique biological features are California's coast redwoods, the world's tallest trees, and Nevada's Devils Hole pupfish, which survives in a single ten-by-seventy-foot desert pool, the smallest range of any vertebrate animal. Precious Heritage draws together for the first time a quarter century of information on U.S. biodiversity developed by natural heritage programs from across the country. This richly illustrated volume not only documents those aspects of U.S. biodiversity that are particularly noteworthy, but also considers how our species and ecosystems are faring, what is threatening them, and what is needed to protect the nation's remaining natural inheritance. Above all, Precious Heritage is a celebration of the extraordinary biological diversity of the United States.

Contrasting ecosystems coexist on the relatively small territory of the country and include semi-deserts in East Georgia, Colchic forests with almost sub-tropical climate in West Georgia and subnival plant communities in high mountains. West Georgia lacks xerophilous vegetation zone and mesophilous forest vegetation spreads from the sea level to subalpine zone. The Colchic refugium (West Georgia) ensured survival of the Tertiary’s mesophilous forest flora. Vertical profile of the vegetation is more complex in East Georgia with semi-desert, steppe and arid open forest zone. In South Georgia the montane zone represented by montane steppe is devoid of forests

Book excerpt: “Far-ranging and deeply researched, Urban Forests reveals the beauty and significance of the trees around us.” —Elizabeth Kolbert, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Sixth Extinction “Jonnes extols the many contributions that trees make to city life and celebrates the men and women who stood up for America’s city trees over the past two centuries. . . . An authoritative account.” —Gerard Helferich, The Wall Street Journal “We all know that trees can make streets look prettier. But in her new book Urban Forests, Jill Jonnes explains how they make them safer as well.” —Sara Begley, Time Magazine A celebration of urban trees and the Americans—presidents, plant explorers, visionaries, citizen activists, scientists, nurserymen, and tree nerds—whose arboreal passions have shaped and ornamented the nation’s cities, from Jefferson’s day to the present As nature’s largest and longest-lived creations, trees play an extraordinarily important role in our cities; they are living landmarks that define space, cool the air, soothe our psyches, and connect us to nature and our past. Today, four-fifths of Americans live in or near urban areas, surrounded by millions of trees of hundreds of different species. Despite their ubiquity and familiarity, most of us take trees for granted and know little of their fascinating natural history or remarkable civic virtues. Jill Jonnes’s Urban Forests tells the captivating stories of the founding mothers and fathers of urban forestry, in addition to those arboreal advocates presently using the latest technologies to illuminate the value of trees to public health and to our urban infrastructure. The book examines such questions as the character of American urban forests and the effect that tree-rich landscaping might have on commerce, crime, and human well-being. For amateur botanists, urbanists, environmentalists, and policymakers, Urban Forests will be a revelation of one of the greatest, most productive, and most beautiful of our natural resources.

There were 1,981 total trees measured: 1,453 or 73 percent were softwood, while 528 or 27 percent were hardwood. Results from this study showed that 88 percent of the total softwood volume measured was utilized for a product, and 12 percent was left as logging residue. Seventy-eight percent of the total hardwood volume measured was utilized for a product, while 22 percent was left as logging residue.

Book excerpt: The Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) Research Work Unit of the USDA Forest Service developed the Timber Product Output (TPO) Database Retrieval System to help customers answer questions about timber harvesting and use in the Southern Region. This system acts as an interface to a standard set of consistently coded TPO data for each State and county in the region and Nation. This regional and national set of TPO data consists of 11 variables that describe for each county the roundwood products harvested, logging residues left in the woods, other timber removals (i.e. land clearing and reserved timber removals), and wood and bark residues generated by the county's primary wood-using mills. The system is available through the FIA Web site: http: //srsfia2.fs.fed.us/
