Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As we journey through life, we expect major events to affect our lives. They do. But the most valuable lessons sometimes come through smaller and what some might call insignificant snippets.During my journey through the decades, I have been blessed with many valuable snippets of life. As I grow older, I realize the importance of these snippets and how I was given the opportunity to use those minute events to grow physically, mentally, and spiritually. The snippets of those events in our lives could be easily overlooked, but they are too important to remain hidden in our memories. It is the snippets that define who we are. It is in the snippets we learned how to expand our creativity, how to love one another, how to deal with our own children, how to forgive, and how to appreciate God's plan for each us.God used our parents' responses to our wild adventures and many mistakes to teach us many of these lessons. One must always be vigilant to God's will. God uses every situation as lessons, but it is up to the individual person to learn from those lessons. It is me again, Lord, thanking You for the blessings of life lessons You gave us in which to grow physically, mentally, and spiritually.A little Georgia wisdom: Always be open to the lesson God provides in each situation. In doing so, one will enjoy this journey through life a whole lot more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early sixties, Stuart Schlegel went into a remote rainforest on the Philippine island of Mindanao as an anthropologist in search of material. What he found was a group of people whose tolerant, gentle way of life would transform his own values and beliefs profoundly. Wisdom from a Rainforest is Schlegel's testament to his experience and to the Teduray people of Figel, from whom he learned such vital, lasting lessons. Schlegel's lively ethnography of the Teduray portrays how their behavior and traditions revolved around kindness and compassion for humans, animals, and the spirits sharing their worlds. Schlegel describes the Teduray's remarkable legal system and their strong story-telling tradition, their elaborate cosmology, and their ritual celebrations. At the same time, Schlegel recounts his own transformation—how his worldview as a member of an advanced, civilized society was shaken to the core by a so-called primitive people. He begins to realize how culturally determined his own values are and to see with great clarity how much the Teduray can teach him about gender equality, tolerance for difference, generosity, and cooperation. By turns funny, tender, and gripping, Wisdom from a Rainforest honors the Teduray's legacy and helps us see how much we can learn from a way of life so different from our own.

Book excerpt: The “heartfelt” (Shelf Awareness) story of how Georgia State University tore up the rulebook for educating lower-income students Published to wide acclaim, Won’t Lose This Dream is the “illuminating” (Times Literary Supplement) story of a public university that has blazed an extraordinary trail for lower-income and first-generation students in downtown Atlanta, the birthplace of the civil rights movement. “A powerful story of institutional transformation” (bestselling author Beverly Daniel Tatum), Won’t Lose This Dream shows how Georgia State University has upended the conventional wisdom about low-income students by harnessing the power of big data to identify and remove obstacles that previously stopped them from graduating—an earthshaking achievement that is reverberating across every college campus today. “Drawing on extensive on-the-ground reporting” (Kirkus Reviews), Andrew Gumbel delivers a thrilling, blow-by-blow account of visionary leaders who overcame fierce resistance, and the remarkable students whose resilience and determination inspired the work at every stage. Their success shows how the promise of social advancement through talent and hard work, the essence of the American dream, can be rekindled even in an age of deep inequalities and divisive politics. “A superb work for anyone interested in higher education” (Library Journal), Won’t Lose This Dream “lays out a persuasive vision for reform” (Publishers Weekly) and a concrete vision of higher ed that works for all Americans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So many women who do everything right to stay healthy still wind up with breast cancer, heart disease, or osteoporosis. In The Fragile Wisdom, Grazyna Jasienska provides an evolutionary perspective on the puzzle of why disease prevention among women is so frustratingly difficult. Modern women, she shows, are the unlucky victims of their own bodies’ conflict of interest between reproductive fitness and life-long health. The crux of the problem is that women’s physiology has evolved to facilitate reproduction, not to reduce disease risk. Any trait—no matter how detrimental to health in the post-reproductive period—is more likely to be preserved in the next generation if it increases the chance of giving birth to offspring who will themselves survive to reproductive age. To take just one example, genes that produce high levels of estrogen are a boon to fertility, even as they raise the risk of breast cancer in mothers and their daughters. Jasienska argues that a mismatch between modern lifestyles and the Stone Age physiology that evolution has bequeathed to every woman exacerbates health problems. She looks at women’s mechanisms for coping with genetic inheritance and at the impact of environment on health. Warning against the false hope gene therapy inspires, Jasienska makes a compelling case that our only avenue to a healthy life is prevention programs informed by evolutionary understanding and custom-fitted to each woman’s developmental and reproductive history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential history of the modern research university When universities began in the Middle Ages, Pope Gregory IX described them as "wisdom's special workshop." He could not have foreseen how far these institutions would travel and develop. Tracing the eight-hundred-year evolution of the elite research university from its roots in medieval Europe to its remarkable incarnation today, Wisdom's Workshop places this durable institution in sweeping historical perspective. In particular, James Axtell focuses on the ways that the best American universities took on Continental influences, developing into the finest expressions of the modern university and enviable models for kindred institutions worldwide. Despite hand-wringing reports to the contrary, the venerable university continues to renew itself, becoming ever more indispensable to society in the United States and beyond. Born in Europe, the university did not mature in America until the late nineteenth century. Once its heirs proliferated from coast to coast, their national role expanded greatly during World War II and the Cold War. Axtell links the legacies of European universities and Tudor-Stuart Oxbridge to nine colonial and hundreds of pre–Civil War colleges, and delves into how U.S. universities were shaped by Americans who studied in German universities and adapted their discoveries to domestic conditions and goals. The graduate school, the PhD, and the research imperative became and remain the hallmarks of the American university system and higher education institutions around the globe. A rich exploration of the historical lineage of today's research universities, Wisdom's Workshop explains the reasons for their ascendancy in America and their continued international preeminence.

Growing up in Tbilisi, Georgia, my maternal grandmother told us, my brother and I, parables, proverbs, and folk stories full of wisdom. We learned from the life lessons tested over many centuries. That not only helped us indirectly to draw the parallels to any given situations, improve ourselves, and learn values and qualities meaningful to mankind's wellbeing, but also, it helped to grow our worldly perspectives and understanding of all that was around us. It taught us to think in metaphors, speak with similes, and express through poetry. With these blessed memories of engaging with some of the most popular works in Georgian literature, I would like to share my favorites in hopes that you too may absorb this fruitful knowledge.
