Book excerpt: Excerpt from Georgia Department of Game and Fish: Report and Recommendations of the State Game and Fish Commissioner, June 1912-13 Efforts to acclimatize pheasants in the United States are of comparatively recent origin, though earlier than is popularly supposed. More than a hundred years ago, Richard Bache, an English-man who married the only daughter of Benjamin Franklin, imported from England both pheasants and partridges, which he liberated on his estate in New Jersey, on the Delaware River near where the town of Beverly now stands. But although he provided both shelter and food for them, the birds had all disappeared by the following spring. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fourth Report of the Department of Game and Fish of Georgia: June 30, 1914, to June 30, 1915 To hon. N. E harris, Governor, and the Members of the General Assembly of Georgia. Gentlemen: I have the honor to submit the following report in connection with the operation of the Depart ment of Game and Fish for the past. Year. The general conditions have shown improvement. A large majority of the people respect and approve of the laws for game and fish protection; and the enforcement of these laws, as applied to those who do not willingly re spect them, is meeting with a. Large measure of success. Particularly is this true of that part of the law which prohibits the shooting of doves over baited fields. The wardens in quite a number of counties, complying with my directions, have been Specially diligent and active in enforcing that part of the law, and as a result more than a hundred prosecutions on charges of violating Section 14 of the Game Law have resulted in convictions or pleas of guilty and the imposition of fines. And in each county where such results have bee-n obtained, the shooting of doves illegally has ceased. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
