Book excerpt: George Frederic Watts, RA (1817 - 1904) was an English Victorian painter and sculptor associated with the Symbolist movement. Watts showed artistic promise very early, learning sculpture from the age of 10 with William Behnes, starting to devotedly study the Elgin Marbles and then enrolling as a student at the Royal Academy at the age of 18. He first exhibited at the Academy in 1837. He also began his portraiture career, receiving patronage from his close contemporary Alexander Constantine Ionides, who later came to be a close friend. He came to the public eye with a drawing entitled Caractacus, which was entered for a competition to design murals for the new Houses of Parliament at Westminster in 1843. Watts took a short trip back to Italy in 1853 and with Charles Thomas Newton to excavate Halicarnassus in 1856-57, via Constantinople and the Greek islands. In the 1860s, Watts' work shows the influence of Rossetti, often emphasising sensuous pleasure and rich colour. Watts's association with Rossetti and the Aesthetic movement altered during the 1870s, as his work increasingly combined Classical traditions with a deliberately agitated and troubled surface, to suggest the dynamic energies of life and evolution, as well as the tentative and transitory qualities of life. These works formed part of a revised version of the House of Life, influenced by the ideas of Max Muller, the founder of comparative religion. Watts hoped to trace the evolving "mythologies of the races" in a grand synthesis of spiritual ideas with modern science, especially Darwinian evolution. In his late paintings, Watts' creative aspirations mutate into mystical images such as The Sower of the Systems, in which Watts seems to anticipate abstract art. This painting depicts God as a barely visible shape in an energised pattern of stars and nebulae. Some of Watts' other late works also seem to anticipate the paintings of Picasso's Blue Period. He was also admired as a portrait painter. His portraits were of the most important men and women of the day, intended to form a "House of Fame". During his last years Watts also turned to sculpture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Frederic Watts (1817–1904) is considered to be one of the Victorianera’s greatest painters. Yet his drawings – which served as the preparatorydesigns for his paintings and, in some cases, the final products of his creativeefforts – have been the subject of surprisingly little scholarship. Watts Galleryholds the largest collection of Watts’s works on paper, comprising approx-imately 800 studies, sketches, copies, and finished artworks that span Watts’sentire artistic career. These range from remarkable copies of engravings madewhen he was a mere ten years old to figurative sketches drawn up to twomonths before his death in 1904 at the age of 87.Representing the most complete record of his development as an artist, Watts’sdrawings offer unequalled insight into his techniques, compositional decisions, and working processes. His studies provide an uncensored record of his thoughtprocess, and reveal the choices and changes he made as he developed some of hismost celebrated works. This book is the first in depth study of Watts’s drawings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 2004. Once the most popular Victorian artist, G. F. Watts was also a complex and elusive figure. Influenced by evolutionary theory, he reinterpreted the tradition of the classical body, while his philanthropic and educational interests informed projects for a more affective public art. This book is the first modern account of the full range of Watts's different artistic interests and practices. Offering fresh approaches to his historical, allegorical and mythological paintings, it also traces his increasingly radical approach to portraiture and sculpture and examines the institutional and biographical factors behind his immense public profile. Together the essays present a comprehensive analysis of Watts's work and his vital relationship to the intellectual, cultural and social forces of his time.

Book excerpt: Widely regarded as a genius and as the greatest painter of the Victorian age, George Frederic Watts (1817-1904) was a ceaseless experimenter throughout his seventy-year career. He was not only the finest and most penetrating portraitist of his age but also a sculptor, landscape painter, and symbolist. This beautifully illustrated book encompasses the work of his entire career, from his early self-portrait in 1834 and first exhibited painting in the Royal Academy in 1837 to his most iconic work, Hope, and the remarkable, almost abstract painting, Sower of the Systems, completed in 1903. In addition, the book includes historic photographs and archival materials, especially concerning the establishment in 1904 of the Watts Picture Gallery in Compton, Surrey, for the permanent exhibition of his art. Essays by leading scholars examine the artist's output, life, reception, and legacy. Exhibition Schedule: Guildhall Art Gallery (November 11, 2008-April 2009)
