George, Duke of Cambridge, Vol. 2: 1871-1904 It is true that an early Act' 'against the buying and selling of ofllces' was passed, which provided that any person who sold an office to which the Act applied, forfeited it, and was 'adjudged a disabled person in law.' But this did not apply to military commissions. Official recognition of the system indeed is found in a Royal Warrant of Charles IL, which bears the date of 7 March 1683-84; and when purchase thus obtained the Sovereign's sanction, it was undoubtedly within his power to bring about such a result. The subsequent sale of commissions was conse quently legal, its legality having in fact been upheld in the (hurt of Chancery by Lord Nottingham' in 1682.
