Book excerpt: The World's Fair in Chicago, 1893, was to be a spectacular event: architects, musicians, artists, and inventors worked on special exhibits to display the glories of their countries. But the Fair's planners wanted something really special, something on the scale of the Eiffel Tower, which had been constructed for France's fair three years earlier. At last, engineer George Ferris had an idea-a crazy, unrealistic, gigantic idea. He would construct a twenty-six-story tall observation wheel. The planners didn't think it could be done. They called it a "monstrosity." It wouldn't be safe. But George fought for his design. Finally, in December 1892, with only four months to go until the fair, George was given permission to build his wheel. He had to fight the tight schedule, bad weather, and general disapproval. Against all odds, the Ferris Wheel turned out to be the talk of the Fair, and proof that dreaming big dreams could pay off. Today, George's Ferris Wheel is an icon of adventure and amusement throughout the world.

Book excerpt: In 1889, Gustave Eiffel's 984-foot iron tower was the wonder and signature engineering accomplishment of the Paris Universal Exposition. In 1892, a young American civil engineer -responding to a challenge to create a symbolic attraction for the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago-proposed erecting a huge steel structure that would have an important characteristic that the Eiffel Tower did not: it would move. George Ferris envisioned a rotating 250-foot steel wheel that would carry more than 2,000 passengers at a time. Many of his fellow engineers doubted Ferris' wheel could be built. Columbian Exposition officials reluctantly granted permission to erect the wheel. In an incredible feat of logistics, Ferris marshalled the efforts of the nation's leading steel mills and fabricating companies to produce the wheel's thousands of component parts and ship them to Chicago for assembly. On June 21, 1893, the Ferris Wheel carried its first paying riders to a vantage point high above the fairgrounds. It quickly became the symbol and one of the most popular attractions of the World's Fair, drawing nearly 1.5 million riders. The Prince of Wheelwrights: George Ferris and His Great Wheel goes beyond the tragically short life story of a successful and innovative civil engineer to present the first thoroughly researched and highly detailed history of the Ferris Wheel itself. Drawing upon contemporary newspaper and magazine sources, as well as Ferris' own words, the book traces the Wheel's thirteen-year existence from its genesis at dinner in a Chicago restaurant to its dynamiting and conversion to scrap metal in St. Louis, Missouri. at the end of a second World's Fair appearance.

As she drew her hand back she felt something hard, a little bottle; she closed her fingers over it. She kept it concealed as Madame returned. The doctor was running up the stairs, followed by a nurse. The landlady came down after her, and beckoned her into the parlour, closing the door. "La pauvrette," she cried, " she had trouble! it is not worz wile, n'est-ce pas, Mademoiselle? to speak of Monsieur to her familee; it help nozzing. Zis package was on ze table; it is directed to Mademoiselle." "A book," Mary said. She got into a street-car and stopped at Twentysecond Street. She did not know the number, but thought she could find the house. She had waited outside, on New Year's Eve, whilst Sep had gone in with some things for the little sister. She asked for the father; he came with an air of jaunty surprise. She made him understand, but had some difficulty in preventing him from blurting it out to the child. And it was not until the maiden ladies had braced him with brandy, found his gloves and silver-topped cane, and she had declared bluntly that she would not wait another second for him, that she succeeded in getting him under way. She felt a hard irritation and dislike for this selfish, chirpy little man; his absurd baby face brought back Sep--Sep with her birdlike daintiness, incisive, cynical tongue, and frank Bohemianism, with the odd strain of Puritanism ever at war underneath--Sep, who wore lace petticoats to the office, who always had flowers under her little flower face. She let him go upstairs, went into the parlour, and looked at the little blue vial. It was not so tiny after all, as it had no neck. . " Poison," in tiny red letters, and ..".

Book excerpt: Boozing. Womanizing. Brawling. Singing. For the last forty years George Jones has reigned as the country's king--the singer many have called the Frank Sinatra of country. And for most of that time, his career has been marked by hard-living, hard-loving, and hard luck. From his early east Texas recordings through his marriage with Tammy Wynette to his latest acclaim as a solid citizen and "high-tech red-neck," Americans have been fascinated with Jones, never even knowing whether he's going to show up for his next concert. Now, in I Lived To Tell It All, George Jones supplies a no-holds-barred account of his excesses and ecstasies. How alcohol ruled his life and performances. How violence marred many friendships and relationships. How money was something to be made but never held on to. And, finally, how the love of a good woman can ultimately change a man, redeem him, and save his life.
