Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geomorphology of the Central Appalachians The number, origin, age, and correlation of peneplains Within the area traversed present a problem concerning Which there is still much difference of opinion. Although a larger number of erosion levels may be represented, the evolution and topography of the Appalachian region will be described With reference to the five most prominent peneplains and to altitudes above and below them. These peneplains, named in the order Of their age, are the pre-triassic, the Fall Zone (jura-cretaceous), the Schooley (tertiary), the Harrisburg (probably late Tertiary), and the Somerville (possibly Pleistocene). The authors hope that this guidebook Will be regarded, not as a statement of facts to be accepted Without question, but merely as a guide to field dis eussions of problems encountered on the journey. This book was released on 2017-12-13 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology and Geomorphology of the Southern Central Blue Ridge: An Indexed Bibliography Much research has already been done on the geology and geomorphology of the Blue Ridge. The purpose of this bibliography is to provide researchers access to these accumulated references. The emphasis of the bibliography is on the geology of the region, for there appears to be relatively little scientific literature written on the geomorphology of this portion of the Blue Ridge. This bibliography covers the Central and Southern Blue Ridge physiographic provinces from southcentral Pennsylvania to northeastern Georgia. Along this corridor the Blue Ridge ranges from five miles to more than 50 miles in width (hunt However, the geologic processes which generated the Blue Ridge were also responsible for the stratigraphy and structure of the rocks in the remainder of the Appalachian belt, namely the Piedmont, Valley and Ridge, and the Appalachian Plateaus. Although the Blue Ridge terminates in Georgia, the rocks, stratigraphy, and structural trends continue into Alabama and in fact may be continuous with the Ouachita Province farther to the west. Because of the intimate geologic relationship of the Appalachian physiographic provinces, the author has included selected references on Piedmont and Valley and Ridge geology representative of this relationship (thomas et al. 1980; Thomas 1973; Milici 1970, The earliest works in geology appeared to have two functions: to describe the geology of an area (kieth 1903, 1904, 19058; Hitchcock 1885; Jones 1923; etc.) or to determine the economic importance of mineral deposits (emmons and Laney 1926. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1889 William Morris Davis offered in his paper The Rivers and Valleys of Pennsylvania'' an elegant set of arguments for the origin of the ridges and gaps, and went on to propose a model for the drainage development and geomorphic evolution of the Appalachians. His work served to focus the geomorphic community into an intense, extended debate on the nature and fundamental controls of the long-term erosion of the Appalachians. The 100th anniversary of Davis' provocative paper prompted the convening of a symposium to address some of the fundamental questions about the Appalachians, the 1989 Geomorphology Symposium. The theme of this symposium was the geomorphic evolution of the Appalachians. This volume brings together a collection of papers from the symposium, to provide a summary of the current state of knowledge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Appalachians constitute one of Earth's major tectonic features and have served as a springboard for innovative geologic thought for more than 170 years. This volume contains 36 original papers reporting the results of research performed throughout nearly the entire length and breadth of the Appalachian region, including all major provinces and geographical areas. Memoir 206 was designed to commemorate the (near-)fortieth anniversary of the publication of the classic Studies of Appalachian Geology volumes that appeared just prior to the application of plate tectonic concepts to the region. Contributions concerning structural evolution, sedimentation, stratigraphy, magmatic processes, metamorphism, tectonics, and terrane accretion illustrate the wide range of ongoing research in the area and collectively serve to mark the considerable progress in scientific thought that has occurred during the past four decades."--pub. desc.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Trail to Railway: Through the Appalachians This book grows out of the conviction that geography in the schools must return somewhat to human interests. In saying this the author will scarcely need to defend himself against the charge of undervaluing physiography. It is only a question of wise adaptation to youthful stu dents. Elementary history also needs to be placed in its setting of physical conditions. It is here attempted to promote both these objects in the study of the eastern United States. If geography and history can be well cor related, both of these great themes may be taught with economy of time and with stronger interest.
