Book Synopsis Geology of Millard County, Utah by : Lehi F. Hintze
Download or read book Geology of Millard County, Utah written by Lehi F. Hintze and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 2003 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bulletin serves not only to introduce the non-geologist to the rich geology of Millard County, but also to provide professional geologists with technical information on the stratigraphy, paleontology, and structural geology of the county. Millard County is unique among Utah’s counties in that it contains an exceptionally complete billion-year geologic record. This happened because until about 200 million years ago the area of present-day Millard County lay near sea level and was awash in shallow marine waters on a continental shelf upon which a stack of fossil-bearing strata more than 6 miles (10 km) thick slowly accumulated. This bulletin summarizes what is known about these strata, as well as younger rocks and surficial deposits in the county, and provides references to scientific papers that describe them in greater detail. Mountains North 30 x 60 (1:100,000-scale) quadrangles. These companion maps and this bulletin portray the geology of Millard County more completely and accurately than any previously published work.

Download or read book The Geology of Antelope Island, Davis County, Utah written by Jon K. King and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 2000 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Antelope Island, the largest of Great Salt Lake’s eight major islands, is about 15 miles (24 km) long and up to 5 miles (8 km) wide, and covers approximately 40 square miles (104 km2). Frary Peak, the island’s highest point, is 6,597feet (2,010 m) above sea level and about 2,400 feet (730 m) above the lake’s historical average level. Although the island is perhaps best known for its wildlife and relatively pristine condition, the island is also fascinating from a geological standpoint.
Book Synopsis Geology of the Sheeprock Thrust Sheet, Central Utah - New Insights by : Malay Mukul
Download or read book Geology of the Sheeprock Thrust Sheet, Central Utah - New Insights written by Malay Mukul and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 1998 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proterozoic sedimentary rocks in the Sheeprock and the adjacent West Tintic Mountains in northcentral Utah were thought to be deformed and transported along the Sheeprock and Pole Canyon thrusts during the Cretaceous to early Tertiary Sevier Orogeny. Evidence from the observed stratigraphy, stratigraphic separation diagrams, downplunge projections of the structure, large-scale relationships between bedding and cleavage orientations, microstructural observations and finite strain data indicate that the Pole Canyon and the Sheeprock thrusts are the same fault, the Sheeprock thrust. The Sheeprock thrust was folded into a gentle synform and subsequently offset by motion along the Indian Springs fault. Based on the offset pattern of the folded Sheeprock thrust along the Indian Springs fault and multiple slickenlines on the Indian Springs fault, two components of motion are recognized; a dextral strike-slip component and a dip-slip component of motion where the southern block is downthrown. The relative age between the two components is not clear.

Book Synopsis Geology of Utah's Mountains, Peaks, and Plateaus by : William T. Parry
Download or read book Geology of Utah's Mountains, Peaks, and Plateaus written by William T. Parry and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2016 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Utah's landscape is among the most spectacular in the world. It is a region of prominent peaks, sweeping valleys, dramatic canyons, and plateaus rimmed by sheer cliffs. Unique among western states, Utah's landscape includes the Colorado Plateau, Basin and Range, and Rocky Mountains geologic provinces. Exposed rocks tell the geologic story of the region's basement structures, overlying surface features, and rock sequences that have contributed to sculpting the appearance of today's landscape. Rocks and formations record the evolution of the western part of the North American continent, and give clues to the nature of ancient crustal basement and Earth's deeper layers. Climate change has shaped the present landscape through the erosional power of ancient glaciers and the presence of today's large lakes and basins. Geology of Utah introduces the state's deep earth, plate tectonics, and the development of its ancient mountains. It describes the geology of the three main geological provinces, ancient elevations, cliffs, valleys, and the history of the region's climate. This book will enrich the experience of enthusiastic amateur geologists who want to understand and explore the development of Utah's highlands and the history of this dynamic landscape.
