Download or read book Geology of the Country Around King's Lynn and the Wash written by Ramus William Gallois and published by Balogh Scientific Books. This book was released on 1994 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This memoir traces the geological history of the district from the muddy seas and volcanicity of the early Palaeozoic of 450 million years ago, via the deserts of the Trias and the shallow tropical and subtropical seas of the Jurassic and Cretaceous, to the last glaciation 18,000 years ago, when much of the district was covered by ice. Finally, it records the history of the period after the retreat of the ice when temperate climates returned and the broad hollow that was to become Fenland and the Wash became progressively filled with freshwater peats, estuarine muds and marine sands as sea level rose in response to the melting of the ice.

Book Synopsis Burnham Norton Friary After the Dissolution by : Sally Francis
Download or read book Burnham Norton Friary After the Dissolution written by Sally Francis and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2023-01-10 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Burnham Norton Friary, one of the first Carmelite houses founded in England (1242-47), was dissolved in 1538. Its remains comprise the restored gatehouse, west gable of the church rebuilt as a barn, Friary Cottage and an open space which was once the precinct. The post-Dissolution history of monastic sites has generally not been well studied. At Norton, nothing was known of its owners between 1561 and 1914, what relationships, if any, they had, or how they used the site. The fate of the Friary buildings was poorly understood and details of the gatehouse restoration unknown. In this pioneering study, Sally Francis uses both modern archival research and a survey of local houses to recover the history and something of the architecture of the friary. Between 1538 and 1848 the church became a barn and the rest of the site was used as a farmstead. In 1848, its owner restored the gatehouse (1848/9), saving it from dereliction, but cleared away the farm buildings to turn the site into an 'Antiquarian relic.' Studying the post-Dissolution history of the site has been a valuable exercise. It not only allows that phase of the site to be understood, it also illuminates aspects of the site's earlier history, which, given the loss of the Friary's own archives, could not otherwise be studied.

Book Synopsis The Lower Palaeolithic Occupation of Britain: Text by : John Wymer
Download or read book The Lower Palaeolithic Occupation of Britain: Text written by John Wymer and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been no satisfactory account of the British Lower Palaeolithic for the last 20 years, despite huge changes in our understanding of our earliest ancestors. This is a comprehensive review of the sites yielding evidence of the Lower Paleolithic in Britain. Most of the finds come from alluvial deposits in river valleys, and maps and sections illustrating the sequence of these deposits form an important part of the book, providing the framework for a chronological separation of the finds. The sites are reviewed in the context of their landscapes: river valleys, seaside, lakeside, downs and hillsides, caves and rock shelters, and in three broad chronological phases. This huge, two-volume publication, accompanied by maps and a gazetteer, is the culmination of an English Heritage Research Programme.
Book Synopsis The Work of Giants by : Andrew F. Pearson
Download or read book The Work of Giants written by Andrew F. Pearson and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roman society demanded stone on a massive and unprecedented scale but, while its buildings often survive to impress the world, ancient quarrying is a forgotten industry. Drawing on the latest archaeological evidence, Andrew Pearson examines the diverse practices of procuring stone, and explains how the products of quarrying were transported and employed within Roman buildings. As well as the major industries such as Purbeck and Bath, attention is paid to the smaller enterprises -- and to foreign quarries and their products. Based largely on the author's own research, this is a long-overdue study -- without competition. It will be important reading for students of the Roman economy.
