Book excerpt: "This list of United States thermal spring locations and temperatures and accompanying maps have been compiled in the course of preparing the maps: (1) Geothermal Energy Resources of the Western United States by National Geophysical and Solar-Terrestrial Data Center, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) (Grim, 1977); (2) Geothermal Energy in the Western United States and Geothermal Energy in Alaska and Hawaii in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Assessment of Geothermal Resources of the United States-7978 (Muffler, 1979); and (3) State maps in press and preparation for the State Coupled Resource Assessment Program, U.S. Department of Energy, Division of Geothermal Energy (DOE/DGE). The list is a compilation of compilations, mainly from Waring's (1965) monumental Thermal Springs of the United States and Other Countries of the World; a Summary, USGS GEOTHERM computer file of thermal spring and well data, and currently active DOE/DCE-sponsored thermal data collection by State agencies and other organizations"--Page 1.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the Arab oil embargo of 1974, it has been clear that the days of almost limitless quantities of low-cost energy have passed. In addition, ever worsening pollution due to fossil fuel consumption, for instance oil and chemical spills, strip mining, sulphur emission and accumulation of solid wastes, has, among other things, led to an increase of as much as 10% in the carbon dioxide content of the atmosphere in this century. This has induced a warming trend through the 'greenhouse effect' which prevents infrared radiation from leaving it. Many people think the average planetary temperatures may rise by 4°C or so by 2050. This is probably true since Antarctic ice cores evidence indicates that, over the last 160000 years, ice ages coincided with reduced levels of carbon dioxide and warmer interglacial episodes with increased levels of the gas in the atmosphere. Consequently, such an elevation of temperature over such a relatively short span of time would have catastrophic results in terms of rising sea level and associated flooding of vast tracts of low-lying lands. Reducing the burning of fossil fuels makes sense on both economic and environmental grounds. One of the most attractive alternatives is geothermal resources, especially in developing countries, for instance in El Salvador where geothermal energy provides about a fifth of total installed electrical power already. In fact, by the middle 1980s, at least 121 geothermal power plants were operating worldwide, most being of the dry steam type.

Book Synopsis Ice Tunnel Closure Phenomena by : John F. Abel
Download or read book Ice Tunnel Closure Phenomena written by John F. Abel and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mechanics of closure, exhibited by ice tunnels, can be understood by considering the ice as a viscous solid. The viscous solid will flow, when subjected to a force, at a rate dependent on the magnitude of the force, the area of relief open for flow, and the apparent viscosity of the viscous solid. In the case of the ice tunnels, the force inducing the flow is the weight of the overburden; the area of relief open for flow is the tunnel opening; and apparent viscosity is the resistance to flow exhibited by the ice. The closure of a rectangular opening made in ice was measured. Maximum closure occurs at the center of unsupported roof, wall, or floor spans. The vertical closure rate decreases negligibly approximately 2% from the center of a room to approximately 6 ft from the wall. From the point about 6 ft from the wall to the wall, the closure rate decreases about 30%. Approximately 30% of vertical closure at the center of the span is due to flexure of the floor and roof. The remaining 70% is due to shortening of the wall height; the major portion of this wall closure occurs at the bottom of the wall. Over 80% of closure due to flexure of the floor and roof results from flexure of the floor. (Author).
