Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology for Engineers IN these days of specialising in watertight compartments, the bearing of geology in relation to almost every branch Of engineer ing is very frequently neglected or ignored. A knowledge of geology is, however, Of the first importance to the practical engineer, but it is difficult for him to study the application of this science to his requirements Without having recourse to a large number of different textbooks and other works. References to geology which are Often of the greatest practical importance are often almost hidden away or treated in an obscure fashion, where as the engineer requires the needful information to be put before him in a clear and concise manner. To meet this want I have endeavoured to compile the requisite information in one volume, in the hope that it may serve as a handy book of reference. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Engineering Geology There are probably but few people of observation and practical experience who doubt the value of proper geological training for the engineer, since he must be prepared to meet and often to solve many problems which involve geological principles. For such knowledge it is necessary that the engineer Should have adequate training in at least those fundamental principles of geology which relate to engineering problems. Among the important questions which the engineer has to consider are the character of the common rocks in their use for building stone and road material; the structure of rocks in relation to tunneling opera tions, dam and reservoir foundations, landslides, etc.; the geological conditions affecting and controlling underground water supplies; the relation of soils to sewage disposal and water purification, etc. More over, some familiarity with such materials as fuels (coal, oil and gas), clays, cements, etc., is also necessary. There may be difference of opinion as to whether the civil engineer should be grounded in abstract geological principles and afterwards allowed to apply them in the field, or whether the exposition of the necessary principles should be illustrated in each instance by actual cases, which show the application of the principle. The first method does not usually appeal to those who have had much practical experience, nor does it find much favor with the engineering student; moreover, it can hardly be considered successful from the pedagogic standpoint. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geology of Building Stones IN the following pages an attempt has been made to gather together some of the facts about the Geology of Building Stones, mainly with a view to the requirements of students of architecture. Special attention has been given throughout to the materials found in the British Isles; but it has been thought desirable to add brief references to some of the stones of other countries. Naturally, in dealing with a subject covering so wide a field, selection and much condensation have been inevitable. Limitations of space have prevented the con sideration of Ornamental Stones, and the introduction of references to the very numerous sources of information. The writer's thanks are due to Professor T. Hudson Beare and Mr. W. R. Baldwin-wiseman for permission to quote certain tables from their exceedingly valuable papers, and to the Councils of the Institution of Civil Engineers and of the Surveyors' Institution for kindly giving their consent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geological and Topographical Maps Their Interpretation and Use: A Handbook for the Geologist, and Civil Engineer Having frequently been asked by my students and others for a text-book dealing with the practical problems which are involved in the interpretation of maps, both geological and topographical, I have endeavoured in the following pages to give such descriptions and instructions as will enable the civil engineer and the student of geology to draw sections of the country depicted upon maps, and to ascertain the depth and thickness of the various strata of which it is built up, and their relations to the surface of the ground and to each other. The importance of a correct solution of this type of problem to the civil engineer, and to all others engaged in work which involves the making of excavations, need not be enlarged upon, and it is hoped that the present volume will be a help to them and to teachers and students of geology and geography. It has been thought desirable to include a brief summary of the main structural features of rocks for the benefit of those readers who have been unable to obtain a systematic course of instruction in geology; but it is not intended that this should replace the fuller accounts to be found in the text-books of Physical Geology. The examples given in the illustrations have been, as far as possible, based upon actual districts in the British Isles, but occasionally it has been necessary to simplify these to some extent for the sake of clearness. In conclusion, I cannot too warmly express my thanks to Professor P. F. Kendall, under whose guidance I acquired my first knowledge of structural geology, and to whom therefore many of the ideas expressed in the present volume are due. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Geology: For Use in Mining Schools, Colleges, and Secondary Schools This volume comprises a systematic course of lectures carefully revised and expanded so as to cover the requirements in Geology as now defined for Engineering, Mining, and Agricultural Schools and Colleges. The first principles of Geology are, so to speak, the ABC of the science. They are mostly based on the simple processes that are now going on around us and when we know Man we are able to read the story of the earth wherever we may chance to find our selves. But the student who confines his observations and studies to his own immediate neighbourhood is in danger of acquiring a false sense of proportion, and may in time unconsciously come to believe that the things and processes he sees in his own terrain are typical of the whole globe. When he afterwards comes to travel further afield he may find himself compelled to modify his standards and renounce many of his early conceptions. The corrective of local prejudices and a narrow horizon is extensive reading and still more extensive travel. A word to the student. Make an early acquaintance with the facts of geology as presented in the field. Miss no chance of travel or exploration with the experienced geologist. Cultivate the faculty of exact observation, and be mindful not to form hasty conclusions. Remember that things are not always what they seem. Make extensive collections of rocks and fossils, and be careful to keep the fossils of each horizon apart. Take every care to preserve your fossils from injury. The dictum of the Hon. Walter Mantell that a fossil that is worth collecting is worth its paper is as true now as when made to the Author forty years ago, and applies equally well to rock specimens. Do not attempt to describe new species leave that to the specialist. Even when you have gained some note as a writer on geology, refrain from coining new terms.
