This book was released on 2004 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents results of geological mapping conducted in 2003 as part of a project addressing the stratigraphic, structural, and metamorphic relationships along the Columbia River valley in British Columbia. The results relate to the stratigraphy of the Upper Arrow Lake & Trout Lake areas and the structural geology of the Columbia River fault zone. The significance of the stratigraphic succession found along Upper Arrow Lake is discussed in regard to previous theories concerning a crustal-scale displacement along the fault zone.

Book excerpt: This report details the results of geochronological measurements made on 19 samples from locations in & directly adjacent to the eastern Bella Coola map area of British Columbia. The analytical data were extracted from a large, mostly unpublished data set that includes uranium/lead, potassium/argon, and argon/argon geochronometry for other parts of the Anahim Lake and Mount Waddington map areas. Analytical data, geological ages, and relevant observations for each dated sample are presented in chronological order. The age results provide broad constraints on pluton emplacement, volcanic eruption, and structural & metamorphic relationships in the study area, although these are discussed only in general terms.

Book excerpt: This study was conducted in response to concerns raised by local residents about water quality in Fisherman Lake, located 18 kilometres north-west of Fort Liard, Northwest Territories. Field investigation of the lake revealed the existence of 13 gas seeps (largely methane) with distinct bubble trains rising continuously to the surface. This paper presents results of analyses of the gas & of the lake water and the determination, through isotope analyses, of whether the gas is of biogenic origin (related to the decomposition of organic matter) or thermogenic origin (representing a seep from geological strata of the gas field below the lake). The possible effects of methane on the lake water are also discussed and recommendations are made for further research.

Book excerpt: This paper presents results from uranium-lead dating of plutonic, volcanic, & sedimentary rocks from the Southern Indian Lake to Granville Lake area of northern Manitoba. The samples analyzed were collected from a range of tectonostratigraphic settings and provide constraints on the age of volcanism & sedimentation in the Rusty Lake Belt, on the deposition of fluvial to littoral facies sediments in the Partridge Breast Belt, and on the emplacement of orthogneiss and plutonic rocks.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this paper is to document results of pore size analyses of rocks from the Astarte River Formation, central Baffin Island, for use in interpreting ground electromagnetic surveys that have been conducted in the central Baffin region. Results are presented for pore size distribution analyses of four black graphitic shale samples subjected to mercury injection porosimetry measurements. These measurements are essential for the electrical mechanism analysis of these samples. Porosity values are compared to those typical of mudstone or crystalline rocks.

Book excerpt: This report presents findings of a bedrock geological mapping project carried out in 2003 in the Ferguson Lake area, located about 200 kilometres west of Rankin Inlet, Nunavut. The project was initiated to provide better understanding of the geology & deformation history of the area and to put a local nickel-copper-platinum group element deposit into a regional context. The main part of the report describes the rock units exposed in the area (metamorphosed supracrustal rocks and intrusive rocks) and the area's structural elements (gneissosity, folds, foliation, shear zones, faulting). An attempt is then made to correlate the deformational features observed in the area with those documented by other researchers. Finally, implications of the findings for the timing of mineralization are briefly discussed.

Book excerpt: Dolostone mounds over 200 metres thick and over four kilometres across developed in deep water during uppermost Arctic Bay Formation shale deposition in the north-west Milne Inlet Graben on northern Baffin Island. This paper describes the geometry of hitherto unrecognized mounds that have been identified from field work in five areas: the Saint Georges Society Cliffs near Arctic Bay; beneath the Nanisivik lead-zinc deposit; Red Rock valley; Magda Lake; and Bellevue Mountain. Their lithology, lateral facies relations, and internal composition are described and an interpretation of the origin & growth of the mounds is offered. Finally, implications of mound growth & distribution for the fault-related flow of mineralizing fluids and consequent base-metal deposition are discussed.

Book excerpt: This paper addresses previous interpretations of the origin of planar laminae and breccia networks found in carbonate rocks of the Society Cliffs Formation, which hosts numerous base metal showings and the Nanisivik zinc-lead deposit on northern Baffin Island. Field observations concerning the sedimentology of the Society Cliffs basinal laminite and the types of breccia found in laminite are presented and a new interpretation of the origin of these rocks is offered. Implications of the findings for oceanic chemistry & base metal mineralization are briefly discussed.

Book excerpt: The Milne Inlet Graben on northern Baffin Island contains unmetamorphosed sedimentary & volcanic rocks. The middle part of the Graben includes the Society Cliffs Formation, which hosts numerous base metal showings and the Nanisivik lead-zinc deposit. Known mineralization in the Graben is predominantly limited to distinct lithofacies & stratigraphic levels of that formation. Understanding the formation's composition, origin, and lateral facies relations may be critical to determining constraints on mineralization. Existing stratigraphic nomenclature for the Formation, based on a type section in the north-west part of the Graben, does not adequately characterize the lateral variations in facies from the north-west to south-east and does not account for the Formation's evolution over time. This paper critically reviews previous research on the Formation, which has focussed on the south-east part of the Graben, and fills in the gaps in knowledge about the Formation's sedimentology & stratigraphy. It describes the distribution & lateral relations of the various lithofacies and interprets the characteristics of the basins in which they were originally deposited.
