Book excerpt: A philosopher, architect, astronomer, and polymath, Thomas Jefferson lived at a time when geography was considered the "mother of all sciences." Although he published only a single printed map, Jefferson was also regarded as a geographer, owing to his interest in and use of geographic and cartographic materials during his many careers—attorney, farmer, sometime surveyor, and regional and national politician—and in his twilight years at Monticello. For roughly twenty-five years he was involved in almost all elements of the urban planning of Washington, D.C., and his surveying skills were reflected in his architectural drawings, including those of the iconic grounds of the University of Virginia. He understood maps not only as valuable for planning but as essential for future land claims and development, exploration and navigation, and continental commercial enterprise. In The True Geography of Our Country: Jefferson’s Cartographic Vision, Joel Kovarsky charts the importance of geography and maps as foundational for Jefferson’s lifelong pursuits. Although the world had already seen the Age of Exploration and the great sea voyages of Captain James Cook, Jefferson lived in a time when geography was of primary importance, prefiguring the rapid specializations of the mid- to late-nineteenth-century world. In this illustrated exploration of Jefferson’s passion for geography—including his role in planning the route followed and regions explored by Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery, as well as other expeditions into the vast expanse of the Louisiana Purchase—Kovarsky reveals how geographical knowledge was essential to the manifold interests of the Sage of Monticello.

Smith, Superintendent Virginia Military Institute, Lexington. General: In entering upon the duties of the office which has been assigned me in connection with the noble State Institution over which you preside, it has appeared most advisable, first to collect and embody in a series of Preliminary Reports, all existing information bearing upon the objects of the survey. These objects briefly stated are to develop the physical resources of the State, to make known its geography, and to point out the great commercial advantages which naturally arise from its situation with regard to the sea and the interior; to show the national importance of that situation and the benefits to arise from turning it to account; also, to collect from the people and embody in like manner all the information already possessed by them, as to the climate, soil and productions of the State, its mineral resources, water-power and manufacturing facilities, to the end that industry may be stimulated, enterprise encouraged, the material prosperity of the people advanced, and the general welfare of the country promoted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The James River is the centerpiece of Richmond, but by the mid-twentieth century it had been abused and neglected. Eagles and sturgeon had nearly disappeared, water-powered industry was abandoning it and the river was a sewer. Today, the river draws visitors to its wooded shorelines, restored canal and feisty rapids. At the local level, this transformation was the result of citizen action, public-private partnerships, difficult decisions by governmental leaders and the hard work of thousands of passionate advocates and volunteers. Local author and lifelong river watcher Ralph Hambrick chronicles the events, projects and controversies that brought about the dramatic change and lends a critical eye to the results.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies on the Geography of Virginia The Indians of the Northern Neck Country being friendly, their presence presented an additional inducement to English settlers, by reason of the profits to be realized from their trade. It was in this region that the next English settlements were founded. If tobacco was king in the James River country, the oyster may be aptly designated as queen in the Northern Neck. In the establishment of an industrial system much depends upon the forces and conditions which give rise to the initiative. The ac quirement of food and clothing constitutes the first essential. This obtained, the most profitable commodity, or means of exchange, is next to receive attention. The Virginia colonists had to meet the first by hunting, fishing, the cultivation of corn, raising of livestock, and bartering with the Indians. All of the conditions precluded a surplus of food stuffs, so that these are ruled out at this stage as possible commodities for exchange. But even if they had been pos sible, the demand would have been so limited as to make the produc tion unprofitable. They must produce a surplus of that for which there is a pressing demand in England to realize profitable results. What were the leading English imports? Iron and steel from Spain; copper from Sweden; wine, salt and canvas from France; silks and velvets from Italy; spices from Asia; and naval supplies, such as tar, pitch, cordage, masts and yards, from Russia and Poland. The search of the colonists for gold and copper had been futile; in 1620, iron mines were opened at the James River Falls, but aban domed because inferior; the grape was neither adapted to the climate nor soil; great difficulty was experienced in supplying the domestic demand for saAbout the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
