Abstract: The Eastern Tianshan Belt (ETB) represents an important component of the southern Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) between Eastern Europe-Siberia and Tarim-North China, and thus its evolution is of vital importance in understanding the evolution of the southern CAOB. Although extensive investigations were carried out on the ETB in the last decade, controversies still surround the accretionary and collisional processes operative during the development of one microcontinent (Central Tianshan; CTS) and two oceans (Junggar and South Tianshan). This Ph.D. research attempts to resolve the controversial issues by incorporating detrital zircon study with petrological, geochronological and geochemical investigations on Paleozoic sedimentary/magmatic rocks in the ETB. New detrital zircon studies on late Paleozoic (meta-)sedimentary rocks from the North (NTS) and South Tianshan (STS) indicate that the CTS was once part of the northern Tarim during Precambrian time because of their indistinguishable detrital zircon age profiles and Hf isotope compositions. Particularly, Ordovician-Silurian (475-440 Ma) detrital zircons with low negative εHf(t) values predominatein Paleozoic sediments in and surrounding the CTS (including northern Tarim), suggesting that coeval magmatic rocks constituted the main body of the CTS at that time. In combination with previous studies, the CTS most probably developed as a continental arc along the northern Tarim, facing the subduction of the Junggar oceanic plate in the early Paleozoic, with its crust progressively thickened in a compressional environment during subduction zone advance, which gave rise to the generation of thickened lower curst-derived adakitic rocks in the CTS at 450 Ma. Through applying zircon Hf isotope mapping of Paleozoic (500-380 Ma) magmatism from different tectonic units of the ETB, the incipient opening of the STS back-arc basin along the northern Tarim is restricted to have occurred in the Late Ordovician, which is consistent with the discovery of 450 Ma adakitic rocks in the CTS and is further substantiated by the fact that well-defined ophiolitic rocks in the STS are mostly younger than 445 Ma. The opening of the STS back-arc basin, accompanied with the separation of the CTS as a microcontinent, was probably triggered by the concurrent rollback of the Junggar oceanic plate, resulting in a regional tectonic switching from subduction zone advance (before 450 Ma) to retreat (since 450-440 Ma), as supported by the immediate change in detrital zircon εHf(t) values from dominantly negative to positive, the exhumation of high-pressure mafic granulites at the northern margin of the CTS at 430 Ma and the emergence of a series of Devonian-Carboniferous island arcs in the Junggar Ocean. The closure of the eastern segment of the STS Ocean between CTS and Beishan most likely took place in the Late Devonian, as evidenced by the occurrence of 380 Ma regional metamorphism in the southern CTS, whereas the Junggar Ocean was most probably closed in the latest Carboniferous, as evidenced by recognition of 300 Ma regional metamorphism in the northern CTS, consistent with 325-310 Ma mafic-felsic magmatism showing subduction-related signatures and 290 Ma mafic plutons exhibiting within-plate basalt affinities. Abstract: The Yidun Terrane in the eastern Tibetan plateau is separated from the Songpan-Ganzi Terrane by the Ganzi-Litang suture zone to the east and Qiangtang Block by the Jinsha suture zone to the west. Both suture zones are marked by eastern Paleo-Tethyan ophiolites. The western part of the Yidun Terrane, the Zhongza Massif, is dominated by Paleozoic sedimentary sequences. In the eastern part, Triassic subduction-related plutonic rocks and volcanic-flysch successions of the Yidun Group are important elements for understanding the evolution of eastern Paleo-Tethys and amalgamation of East Asia. The Yidun Group includes the Lieyi, Qugasi, Tumugou and Lanashan Formations from base upwards. Two major depocenters for the Yidun Group can be recognized. Sedimentary detritus supplying for the northern depocenter were dominantly sourced from the Zhongza Massif and received recycling components in a passive margin setting. In the southern depocenter, the Qugasi Formation accumulated materials from the Zhongza Massif, whereas the Tumugou Formation received additional materials from locally distributed Triassic arc rocks and crystalline basement rocks, which indicates transition from a passive margin to a magmatic arc setting. In the southern Yidun Terrane, (quartz-) dioritic hypabyssal intrusions are spatially associated with andesites and dacites and have zircon U-Pb ages from 230 to 215 Ma. They have adakitic geochemical features and are divided into the 230-215 Ma high silica (HSA) and 215 Ma low silica (LSA) adakitic rocks. The HSA formed from subducted slab melts with limited interaction with the overlying mantle wedge, whereas the LSA were generated from slab melts with more extensive interaction with mantle due to slab break-off at 215 Ma. In the northern Yidun Terrane, granitic plutons and volcanic rocks occur in two parallel N-S belts. The 228 Ma volcanic rocks in the Xiangcheng region are adakites generated from slab melts, whereas the 231-230 Ma volcanic rocks in the Changtai region, including basalts, andesites, dacites and rhyolites, formed in a back-arc setting. The Changtai basalts were produced by low degrees of partial melting of an OIB-like mantle source with minor involvement of subducted slab components. The Changtai andesites/dacites represent evolved members from the basaltic magmas through an AFC process, whereas the rhyolites formed from anatexis of a garnet-bearing crustal source. These volcanic rocks are 4-6 mys older than arc granitic rocks in the northern Yidun Terrane. The spatio-temporal framework of all the subdution-related igneous rocks suggests initiation of subduction of the Ganzi-Litang oceanic lithophere under the southern Yidun Terrane at 230 Ma, resulting in the adakitic magmatism in the Shangri-La and Xiangcheng regions and the back-arc magmatism in the Changtai region. Subsequently at 224 Ma, the subduction extended to the northern Yidun Terrane, leading to the formation of the arc granitic plutons. Located in the southeastern Yangtze Block, the Jiangnan Orogen formed through the amalgamation between the Yangtze and Cathaysia Blocks. The Yangtze Block has sporadically exposed Archean rocks in the north, Paleoproterozoic to Mesoproterozoic volcano-sedimentary sequences in the southwest and widespread Neoproterozoic sedimentary sequences accompanied by syn-sedimentary igneous rocks on the western and southeastern margins. The late Paleoproterozoic to early Mesoproterozoic Dongchuan, Dahongshan and Hekou groups in the southwestern Yangtze Block formed in a series of fault-controlled, rift-related basins associated with the fragmentation of the supercontinent Columbia. These sedimentary sequences were deposited between 1742 and 1503 Ma, and recorded continuous deposition from alluvial fan and fluvial sedimentation during the initial rifting to deep marine sedimentation in a passive margin setting. Sedimentation during initial rifting received felsic detritus mainly from adjacent continents, whereas sedimentation in a passive margin basin received detritus from felsic to intermediate rocks of the Yangtze Block. Paleoproterozoic to Mesoproterozoic rift basins in the southwestern Yangtze Block are remarkably similar to those of north Australia and northwestern Laurentia in their lower part (1742-1600 Ma), but significantly different after ca. 1600 Ma. The southwestern Yangtze Block was likely connected with the north Australia and northwestern Laurentia in Columbia but drifted away from these continents after ca. 1600 Ma. Traditionally thought Mesoproterozoic sedimentary sequences in the southeastern Yangtze Block are now confirmed to be Neoproterozoic in age and include the 835-830 Ma Sibao, Fanjingshan and Lengjiaxi groups, and 831-815 Ma Shuangqiaoshan and Xikou groups. These sequences are unconformably overlain by the 810-730 Ma Danzhou, Xiajiang, Banxi, Heshangzheng, Luokedong and Likou groups. The regional unconformity likely marked the amalgamation between the Yangtze and Cathaysia Blocks and thus occurred at 815-810 Ma. The lower sequences (835-815 Ma) received dominant Neoproterozoic ( 980-820) felsic to intermediate materials in an active tectonic setting related to continental arc and orogenic collision, whereas the upper sequences represent sedimentation in an extensional setting with input of dominant Neoproterozoic granitic to dioritic materials ( 740-900 Ma). The upper parts of the Shuangqiaoshan and Xikou groups, uncomfortably underlain by lower units, are molasse-type assemblages with additional input of pre-Neoproterozoic detritus, representing accumulation of sediments in a retro-arc foreland basin associated with the formation of the Jiangnan Orogen. Stratigraphic correlation, similarly low-δ18O and tectonic affinity of igneous rocks from different continents suggest that the Yangtze Block should be placed in the periphery of Rodinia probably adjacent to northern India. Paleoproterozoic ( 2480 Ma and 2000 Ma) and Early Neoproterozoic (711-997 Ma) were the most important periods of crustal and magmatic events of the southeastern Yangtze Block, but there is a lack of significant Grenvillian magmatism. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [Truncated abstract] The Paleo-Tethys orogen in SW China constitutes an important part of the greater Tethyan Himalayan tectonic domain. This orogen comprises a series of N S trending, ophiolitic suture zones and flanking magmatic belts that represent the dominant geological feature of the region. The orogen records closure of the Paleo-Tethys and accretion of a series of continental fragments to Asia in the Late Paleozoic and Mesozoic. Many facets of geology of this vast region remain enigmatic. This thesis focuses on the late Paleozoic Triassic magmatic belts developed across the Jinshajiang orogenic belt that forms the eastern part of the Paleo-Tethys orogen in SW China. Field investigation, petrology and geochemistry studies, integrated with employment of geochronological and isotopic techniques provide critical information. We have identified two distinct suites of plagiogranites within the Jinshajiang ophiolitic mélange, the Dongzhulin trondhjemite and Jiyidu tonalite, which represent rift and subduction settings, respectively, related to opening and closing of the ocean. SHRIMP U Pb analysis on zircons extracted from the Dongzhulin trondhjemite yields a mean 206Pb/238U age of 347 ± 7 Ma. REE and isotopic characteristics suggest an origin from low pressure partial melting of an amphibolitic protolith. Highly variable in situ Hf isotopic compositions for zircon, together with geologic relations, suggest that this intrusion probably formed near an embryonic spreading centre in a continent ocean transition setting. The Jiyidu tonalite has a U Pb zircon age of 283 ± 3 Ma, and geochemical data indicates high Sr/Y, (La/Yb)N, Nb/Ta and low Y, and marked heavy REE depletion. These signatures suggest derivation from low degree partial melting of subducted slab at pressures high enough to stabilize garnet and rutile. A slabmelt origin is also supported by in situ Hf and O data for zircon that show isotopic compositions comparable with typical altered oceanic crust. Thus, the crystallization age of the Jiyidu high-Sr/Y tonalite provides a constraint for the subduction of the Jinshajiang ocean floor. The Jinshajiang orogenic belt also provides an exceptional record of continental development as the result of closure of the Paleo-Tethys seaway and ensuing collision. U Pb age and geochemical constraints, in conjunction with other geologic evidence, suggest that subduction of the Paleo-Tethys ocean dominated local tectonics prior to the Triassic, creating a volcano plutonic arc along the eastern margin of the Qamdo Simao terrane. Late phase of this magmatism was represented by the 255 248 Ma Baimaxueshan pluton, which consists mainly of diorite, tonalite and granodiorite, and contains mafic magmatic enclaves (MMEs). Whole-rock geochemistry and zircon in situ Hf-O isotopes suggest an origin from hydrous partial melting of subduction-modified subcontinental lithospheric mantle. Following consumption of the ocean, collision zone magmatism, dated at 247 237 Ma, was manifested by eruption of voluminous volcanic rocks focused in a suture-parallel fore-arc zone. Crustal anatexis was contemporaneous with the earliest phases of collision, producing high-silica rhyolites of Early Triassic age (ca. 247 246 Ma)...
