Book excerpt: This book presents the Rock-Eval® method, which was invented in France in the 1970s and is used by the oil industry worldwide to characterize source rocks and reservoir rocks as well as their petroleum potential. Rock Eval® has also spread to other fields of application, including soil science, paleoceanography, paleoclimatology, environmental science (i.e. monitoring pollution remediation), material chemistry (i.e. carbonates, microplastics) and many others. The Rock-Eval Method presents a collection of chapters reviewing this method and its fields of application, and examines its possible developments. The authors are from either the academic or applied sector and have all contributed to the development of the Rock Eval® apparatus and method. This instrument, which lies somewhere between a chromatographic, a thermal and an elemental analyzer, is now evolving to be an analytical platform, on which new fields of applications can be tested in the future.

Book excerpt: Shale resource systems include conventional source rocks, unconventional resources such as shale gas and shale oil system. Regardless of the type of shale resource system, the issues of petroleum formation processes (including petroleum generation, migration and storage) are very important in petroleum evaluation and exploration. Because of the complicated and different geological settings in the world, the evaluation approaches and workflows may not be easily implemented following those from successful examples. Thus, the mechanisms of petroleum formation are fundamental for petroleum exploration and production all over in the world. The reason this special issue focuses on the shale system is because the shale system is not only the main source rock type but also the main unconventional reservoir type in the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Woodford Shale is a dark, siliceous mudstone that was deposited in a rift basin during late Devonian to early Mississippian times. Three drill cores containing the Woodford Shale from the Anadarko Basin, Oklahoma, have been geochemically analyzed using a handheld energy-dispersive x-ray fluorescence instrument. Each core was analyzed at 3- to 4- inch intervals, providing high-resolution chemostratigraphy. Analysis of the following elemental concentrations was performed: Mg, Al, S, Si, P, K, Ti, Ca, Mn, Fe, Mo, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Th, Rb, U, Sr, Zr, and V. Major element geochemistry supports that the Woodford is a siliceous mudstone, with little carbonate input. The relationship between iron and sulfur depicts a high degree of pyritization. A portion of the Woodford Shale appears to be iron-limited with respect to pyrite formation. Trace element enrichment factors and ratios (Ni/Co, V/Cr, and V/(V+Ni)) indicate anoxic or euxinic, oscillating with dysoxic to oxic, bottom water conditions during deposition of the Woodford Shale.

Book excerpt: A prolific source rock in Oklahoma, the Woodford Shale has sourced petroleum reservoirs for millions of years and produced oil and gas since 1939. Not until the shale boom of the early 2000's was the full potential of the Woodford Shale, as a reservoir, realized. The focus of this research is to characterize three (the main ones) of the four petro-physically distinct zones within the Ardmore Woodford Shale in order to investigate the ideal zone for hydrocarbon extraction. The Woodford Shale is composed of tight, organic-rich, interbedded shale and chert beds deposited along a marine slope. Due to its tight nature, petro-physical characteristics such as porosity, permeability and fluid flow behavior are hypothesized to be related to pore-throat distribution on the nano-meter scale. A total of seven samples from two wells, cover three of the four zones within the Woodford Shale. Pore framework and fluid flow were investigated using mercury injection capillary pressure (MICP), contact angle (wettability), and spontaneous imbibition tests. Pyrolysis tests were conducted to analyze thermal maturity and TOC, while X-ray diffraction (XRD) tests provided the samples mineral composition. The samples exhibit mineral compositions of mostly quartz and clays with high wettability and pore connectivity when interacting with a hydrophobic fluid of n-decane. Porosity and permeability values ranged from 0.5 to 3.1% and 4.4x10-7 to 1.5x10-5 mD respectively, with the majority of pore throats existing within the 5-50 nm range (likely organic matter hosted and/or intraparticle pores). The MICP-derived porosity and permeability results are compared to these obtained from well logs, and a lack of industry standards for measuring tight shale characteristics from core samples makes consistent and repeatable results challenging. An integrated analysis of MICP, imbibition, wettability, geochemistry, well logs, and production data suggests that zone two within the Woodford Shale is the desirable target for hydrocarbon production.

Book excerpt: Depositional processes and redox states in the Woodford Shale were assessed critically by examining lithologic and geochemical variables in core and outcrop to facilitate efficient development of this world-class reservoir. The Woodford was deposited in a Late Devonian epicontinental sea near the southern edge of Laurussia during the Kaskaskia cratonic onlap. The Woodford consists mainly of siliceous and argillaceous mudrock. The siliceous mudrocks contain radiolaria and cryptocrystalline silica, including chert. Paleo-redox indicators show decreasing oxygen levels from the shallow shelf toward the Ouachita embayment and the ancestral Anadarko Basin. Much of the Woodford accumulated under dysoxic conditions, and anoxic conditions apparently existed for extended periods only in the deepest reaches of the shelf. Woodford sediment that accumulated near the edge of the Ouachita embayment in east-central Oklahoma contains more biogenic silica than that higher on the shelf, suggesting that silica and phosphate deposition were associated with oceanic upwelling. Ripple cross-laminae and graded beds indicate bottom currents during deposition. Soft-sediment deformation is common in the Woodford Shale, particularly along the southern margin of the Anadarko Basin. A key outcome of this research is the realization that virtually all features in the Woodford Shale can be explained in terms of the physical and geochemical processes that operate today in oxygen minimum zones.

Book excerpt: Detailed geochemical analyses are being used to provide an accurate assessment of the oil and gas resources present in the Devonian shales in the Appalachian and Illinois Basins. The suite of geochemical analyses is designed to evaluate the organic richness, the hydrocarbon potential, the type of organic matter and the thermal maturity of the organic matter. Laboratory techniques such as pyrolysis gas chromatography and mass balance thermal extraction were also employed to measure thermally derived oil and gas yields from the Devonian shales. Stable carbon isotope geochemistry has also been initiated. The first phase of this study involved the determination of stable carbon isotope values for shale core samples.

Book excerpt: The principle goal of this project was to investigate compositional, textural, and sedimentological variability in the Oklahoma STACK Play's Meramec Formation and time equivalent outcrops of the Pryor Creek Formation in northeastern Oklahoma and to assess the potential of a partial-SWIR (Short Wave Infrared, 900-1700 nm) hyperspectral imaging sensor for drill core and sUAS-based (small Unmanned Aircraft Systems) outcrop characterization. The STACK Play is a colloquial term that refers to stacked unconventional petroleum reservoirs that are primarily located in Canadian, Kingfisher, Blaine, and Dewey Counties, central Oklahoma. Discovery of, and commercial production from, the play was initiated in 2011 by Newfield Exploration Co. and today comprises a significant share of unconventional petroleum production in Oklahoma. The most prolific reservoir within the STACK Play is the Meramec Formation which is approximately Meramecian in age. Chapter 2 focuses on two drill cores from the producing Meramec Formation in Dewey and Canadian Counties of central Oklahoma. Conventional core analysis techniques, including analysis of core sedimentology, mineralogy, and geochemistry, are integrated with lab-based partial-SWIR hyperspectral analysis of both cores. The Meramec Formation comprises proximal and distal ramp deposits that include argillaceous quartz siltstones, calcareous quartz siltstones and sandstones, and lesser grainstones. Analysis of partial-SWIR hyperspectral imaging data establishes a relationship between reflectance and primary mineralogy in both cores, which was ultimately used in conjunction with other conventional core data to distinguish multiple orders of stratigraphic cyclicity in the Meramec Formation, including cyclicity that is below the resolution of typical core logging and sampling procedures. Chapter 3 details the study of outcrops located in Pryor Quarry (Mayes County, northeast Oklahoma), which are approximately age equivalent to the Meramec Formation. The potential of sUAS-based partial-SWIR hyperspectral imaging for outcrop analysis is evaluated using lab-based full-SWIR point spectral analysis of samples taken from a vertical outcrop transect in the quarry. Outcrops of the Meramecian Pryor Creek Formation are comprised of wackestones, mudstones, quartz siltstones and to a lesser extent
