Download or read book Passion and Pain written by Marc Shapiro and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2007-06-26 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A definitive biography of Hector Lavoe's rise from Puerto Rico to stardom in New York that led to sold-out concerts and best-selling salsa albums, yet gave way to drug addiction, a strained marriage and tragedy. From the poverty-stricken streets of Ponce, Puerto Rico to the vibrant barrios of New York City, HECTOR LAVOE became the singer of all singers, and the driving-force behind the Salsa movement in the mid-1960s. His popularity rivaled that of his contemporaries, Tito Puente, Celia Cruz and Johnny Pacheco. Behind the music, Hector's life was filled with drugs, alcohol and women. An endless stream of tragedy plagued him, including a gun-related accident that killed his son, Hector's ninth floor jump from a hotel window, and his death in 1993 from AIDS. But Hector's pristine voice, one-of-a-kind stage performances, sold-out concerts and bestselling albums were what his fans remember most and what made him an international icon. His music brought joy to legions of people, and it continues today. Marc Shapiro's Passion and Pain is "A no-holds barred biography" (Uptown Magazine) of a fascinating life.

This book was released on 2023-11-25 with total page 1544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This five-volume work consists in biographies of the most important writers and thinkers of their time, since 14th until 19th century. Most of them were written by the Romantic writer Mary Shelley. Her extensive knowledge of history and languages, her ability to tell a gripping biographical narrative, and her interest in the burgeoning field of feminist historiography are reflected in these works. She wrote in a style that combined secondary sources, memoir, anecdote, and her own opinions. Her political views are most obvious in the Italian Lives, where she supports the Italian independence movement and promotes republicanism; in the French Lives she portrays women sympathetically, explaining their political and social restrictions and arguing that women can be productive members of society if given the proper educational and social opportunities. Olga has never told her husband that she ever had children--and he must never know. In exchange for Nicoletta's playing "the daughter of an old friend," Olga offers Nicoletta a place to live and an apprenticeship at the restaurant. Nicoletta fits in well among the unique personalities at Casetta dell'Orso. She gets along particularly well with the kindly headwaiter, Claudio, a divorced man who, after years, has still never taken off his wedding ring. As Nicoletta's feelings for Claudio become complicated, she finds a sympathetic ear in Olga, leading the estranged pair to form a friendship neither expected. Book Synopsis Made in NuYoRico by : Marisol Negrón
Download or read book Made in NuYoRico written by Marisol Negrón and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2024-09-06 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Made in NuYoRico, Marisol Negrón tells the cultural history of salsa, tracing the music’s Nuyorican meanings over a fifty-year period that begins with the establishment of Fania Records in 1964 and how it capitalized on salsa’s Nuyorican imaginary to cultivate a global audience. Drawing on interviews with fans, legendary musicians, and music industry figures as well as analyses of songs, albums, films, and archival documents, Negrón shows how Nuyorican cultural and social histories became embedded in and impacted salsa music's flows during its foundational period in the mid-1960s and its boom in the 1970s. Salsa’s Nuyorican aesthetics challenged mainstream notions of Americanness and Puerto Ricanness and produced an alternative public sphere through which New York’s poor and working-class Puerto Ricans could contest racialization and colonial power. By outlining salsa’s complicated musical, cultural, commercial, racial, gendered, legal, and political entanglements, Negrón demonstrates its centrality to Nuyorican identity and subjectivity.

Download or read book Forgotten Peace written by Robert A. Karl and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Forgotten Peace examines Colombian society's attempt to move beyond the Western Hemisphere's worst mid-century conflict and how that effort molded notions of belonging and understandings of the past. In this book, Robert A. Karl reconstructs encounters between government officials, rural peoples, provincial elites, and urban intellectuals during a crucial conjuncture that saw reformist optimism transform into alienation. In addition to offering a sweeping reinterpretation of Colombian history--including the most detailed account of the origins of the FARC insurgency in any language--Karl provides a Colombian vantage on global processes of democratic transition, development, and memory formation in the 1950s and 1960s. Sweeping in scope, Forgotten Peace challenges contemporary theories of violence in Latin America."--Provided by publisher.

This book was released on 2022-12-05 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his 1978 book Nelson Goodman coined the term “worldmaking.” The new-materialistic approach to the potential for meaning of extra-human materiality and its multidimensional entanglements and the intraconnectedness shifts the concept of world-making into new perspectives of interpretation. In the categories of Karen Barad’s “agential realism,” it applies to practices of knowledge production and to a diffractive (re)configuration of the world’s matter and its meaning. “World-making” gains a further specific expression in Donna Haraway’s concept of “worlding” which shows the intraactive entanglement of matter, substance, meaning, storytelling and thinking on the fundamental level of the polysemic linguistic tissue itself.

Book Synopsis World Music Pedagogy, Volume IV: Instrumental Music Education by : Mark Montemayor
Download or read book World Music Pedagogy, Volume IV: Instrumental Music Education written by Mark Montemayor and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2018-06-14 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World Music Pedagogy, Volume IV: Instrumental Music Education provides the perspectives and resources to help music educators craft world-inclusive instrumental music programs in their teaching practices. Given that school instrumental music programs—concert bands, symphony orchestras, and related ensembles—have borne musical traditions that broadly reflect Western art music and military bands, instructors are often educated within the European conservatory framework. Yet a culturally diverse and inclusive music pedagogy can enrich, expand, and transform these instrumental music programs to great effect. Drawing from years of experience as practicing music educators and band and orchestra leaders, the authors present a vision characterized by both real-world applicability and a great depth of perspective. Lesson plans, rehearsal strategies, and vignettes from practicing teachers constitute valuable resources. With carefully tuned ears to intellectual currents throughout the broader music education community, World Music Pedagogy, Volume IV provides readers with practical approaches and strategies for creating world-inclusive instrumental music programs.
