Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in simple language with relevant examples, this illustrative introductory book presents best practices in experimental design and simple data analysis. Taking a practical and intuitive approach, it only uses mathematical formulae to formalize the methods where necessary and appropriate. The text features extended discussions of examples that include real data sets arising from research. The authors analyze data in detail to illustrate the use of basic formulae for simple examples while using the GenStat statistical package for more complex examples. Each chapter offers instructions on how to obtain the example analyses in GenStat and R.

Book excerpt: The third edition of this popular introductory text maintains the character that won worldwide respect for its predecessors but features a number of enhancements that broaden its scope, increase its utility, and bring the treatment thoroughly up to date. It provides complete coverage of the statistical ideas and methods essential to students in agriculture or experimental biology. In addition to covering fundamental methodology, this treatment also includes more advanced topics that the authors believe help develop an appreciation of the breadth of statistical methodology now available. The emphasis is not on mathematical detail, but on ensuring students understand why and when various methods should be used. New in the Third Edition: A chapter on the two simplest yet most important methods of multivariate analysis Increased emphasis on modern computer applications Discussions on a wider range of data types and the graphical display of data Analysis of mixed cropping experiments and on-farm experiments

In this new edition, the already wide-ranging coverage is enhanced by the addition of new chapters on social media, evaluating the research process, Kansei engineering and medical research reporting. The extensive updates also provide the latest guidance on issues relevant to postgraduates in all subject areas, from writing a proposal and securing research funds, to data analysis and the presentation of research, through to intellectual property protection and career opportunities. This thoroughly revised new edition provides: Clear and concise advice from distinguished international researchers on how to plan, organise and conduct research. New chapters explore social media in research, evaluate the research process, Kansei engineering and discuss the reporting of medical research. Check lists and diagrams throughout. Praise for the second edition: “... the most useful book any new postgraduate could ever buy.” (New Scientist) “The book certainly merits its acceptance as essential reading for postgraduates and will be valuable to anyone associated in any way with research or with presentation of technical or scientific information of any kind.”(Robotica) Like its predecessors, the third edition of Research Methods for Postgraduates is accessible and comprehensive, and is a must-read for any postgraduate student.

Book excerpt: This book critically reviews the developments and achievements of systematics in the 50 years since the foundation of the Systematics Association in 1937, and more particularly since the appearance of The New Systematics, edited for the Association by Sir Julian Huxley in 1940. Botanists, microbiologists, palaeontologists, and zoologists--theoreticians and practitioners alike--consider fundamental aspects of the subject and the directions in which it might develop into the next century. The result is a description of a highly active subject adapting concepts and practices to accommodate exciting new information from expanding areas of research--one which, however, also needs to take increased note of the requirements of its users. The main challenge for systematics in the coming decades emerges as the need to re-establish its central unifying position as the keystone of biology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This brief will provide a bridge in succinct form between the geostatistics textbooks and the computer manuals for `push-button' practice. It is becoming increasingly important for practitioners, especially neophytes, to understand what underlies modern geostatistics and the currently available software so that they can choose sensibly and draw correct conclusions from their analysis and mapping. The brief will contain some theory, but only that needed for practitioners to understand the essential steps in analyses. It will guide readers sequentially through the stages of properly designed sampling, exploratory data analysis, variography (computing the variogram and modelling it), followed by ordinary kriging and finally mapping kriged estimates and their errors. There will be short section on trend and universal kriging. Other types of kriging will be mentioned so that readers can delve further in the substantive literature to tackle more complex tasks.

The British Society for Plant Pathology (BSPP) has been at the forefront of several initiatives in handling information electronically, while the Systematics Association has a long-standing involvement in computer-based species identification. BSPP and the Systematics Association recognised the opportunity to join forces and develop a combined program for a conference on these themes, held in December 1996, at the University of Kent at Canterbury. This book presents 40 edited and revised papers from that conference. The topics covered are wide-ranging and focus on several themes. There are papers on subjects as diverse as biological databases, geographic information systems, probabilistic identification systems and electronic teaching aids. Written by authors from Europe, North and Central America, China, India and New Zealand, the book provides an essential review for plant pathologists and taxonomists, as well as other biologists wishing to keep up with the information revolution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last decade biological research has changed completely. The reductionism approach of studying only a few biological entities at a time in the past is being replaced by the study of the biological system as a whole today. This requires that existing biological knowledge (data) is made readily available. Effective integration of biological knowledge from databases scattered around the internet and other information resources (for example experimental data) is recognized as a pre-requisite for many aspects of biological research. Systems for the integration of biological knowledge have to overcome several challenges: biological data sources may contain similar or overlapping coverage and the user of such systems is faced with the challenge of generating a consensus data set or selecting the "best" data source; different access methods to databases, different data formats, different naming conventions and erroneous or missing data. To address these challenges and enable effective integration of biological knowledge, the ONDEX system was created. ONDEX provides an integrated view across biological data sources to the user. Here the basic principles behind ONDEX are presented.
