Book excerpt: The rapid decline of the Philippine forests has resulted in highly fragmented tree populations. In response to this, plantation programs boomed during the 80‘s and early 90‘s of the last century. Plantation forests, however, were mostly established with reproductive materials from unknown sources with presumably restricted genetic diversity. In this study, genetic variation patterns at microsatellite (SSR) and AFLP markers were investigated and compared between planted and natural populations of the ecologically important and critically endangered tropical rainforest tree species: Shorea contorta and Parashorea malaanonan (Dipterocarpaceae). The study was important to conserve the remaining genetic diversity within populations of the investigated dipterocarps. Further, it provided useful data for better planning actions when it comes to reinforcement of existing species populations and re-introduction of the species. In addition, it gave information for a genetically sound seed collection efforts to support the continuous forest restoration programs in the country.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a scarcity of detailed information regarding the ecophysiology of root systems and the way root system functioning is affected by both internal and external factors. Furthermore, global climate change is expected to increase the intensity of climate extremes, such as severe drought, heat waves and periods of heavy rainfall; in addition other stresses such as salinization of soils are increasing world-wide. Recently an increasing awareness has developed that understanding plant traits will play a major role in breeding of future crop plants. For example, there is increasing evidence that the traits of root systems are defined by the properties of individual roots. However, further knowledge on the functional importance of root segments and the molecular/physiological mechanisms underlying root system functioning and persistence is needed, and would specifically allow modifying (crop) root system functionality and efficiency in the future. Another major gap in knowledge is localized at the root-soil interface and in regard to the potential adaptive plasticity of root-rhizosphere interactions under abiotic stress and/or competition. It is currently unknown whether adaptations in microbe communities occur, for example due to modified exudation rates, and what are the subsequent influences on nutrient mobilization and uptake. Furthermore, uncovering the mechanisms by which roots perceive neighboring roots may not only contribute to our understanding of plant developmental strategies, but also has important implications on the study of competitive interactions in natural communities, and in optimizing plant performance and resource use in agricultural and silvicultural systems. In this Research Topic, we aimed to provide an on-line, open-access snapshot of the current state of the art of the field of root ecology and physiology, with special focus on the translation of root structure to function, and how root systems are influenced by interplay with internal and external factors such as abiotic stress, microbes and plant-plant interaction. We welcomed original research papers, but reviews of specific topics, articles formulating opinions or describing cutting-edge methods were also gladly accepted.

Book excerpt: Abstract : Quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides, Michx.) is a fast growing tree which is broadly distributed in North America. It reproduces both clonally through root suckers and sexually through seeds. In order to assess the effect of postharvest treatment on genotypic diversity and structure and on phenotypic trait expressions, we analyzed a total of 323 stems in three control plots and in three treatment plots in Long-Term Soil Productivity study site at Ottawa National Forest with heavy soil compaction and forest floor removal at seven highly variable microsatellite markers and for 25 phenotypic traits. Overall higher spatial aggregation of ramets from the same clonal assemblies and spatial separation of different clonal assemblies was observed in the treatment plots as compared to control plots. Phenotypic and genetic clonal delineation showed a high correspondence in two treatment plots with the most pronounced spatial genetic structure. Phenotypic delineation of clonal colonies was not possible in other plots where clonal colonies were spatially intermixed or occupied a large area. Heavy soil compaction and forest floor removal might have restricted the spread of clonal colonies in treatment plots. While treatment had little effects on genetic and phenotypic separation among plots, very high genetic differentiation was found among most plots with amaximum pairwise RST differentiation of 35.8%. One treatment plot was strongly differentiated phenotypically from all other plots likely as result of micro-environmental variation. Consequently, micro-environmental variation and genetic differences among plots should be considered when treatment effects on phenotypic trait expression are analyzed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genetics and Genomics of Populus provides an indepth description of the genetic and genomic tools and approaches for Populus, examines the biology that has been elucidated using genomics, and looks to the future of this unique model plant. This volume is designed to serve both experienced Populus researchers and newcomers to the field. Contributors to the volume are a blend of researchers, some who have spent most of their research career on Populus and others that have moved to Populus from other model systems. Research on Populus forms a useful complement to research on Arabidopsis. In fact, many plant species found in nature are – in terms of the life history and genetics – more similar to Populus than to Arabidopsis. Thus, the genetic and genomic strategies and tools developed by the Populus community, and showcased in this volume, will hopefully provide inspiration for researchers working in other, less well developed, systems.

Book excerpt: Poplars and willows form an important component of forestry and agricultural systems, providing a wide range of wood and non-wood products. This book synthesizes research on poplars and willows, providing a practical worldwide overview and guide to their basic characteristics, cultivation and use, issues, problems and trends. Prominence is given to environmental benefits and the importance of poplar and willow cultivation in meeting the needs of people and communities, sustainable livelihoods, land use and development.
