This book was released on 2011-02-10 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Navigating Time and Space in Population Studies presents innovative approaches to long-standing questions about the diffusion of population and demographic behavior across space and over time. This collection utilizes newly-available historical data along with spatially and temporally explicit analytical methods to evaluate and refine core demographic theories and to pose new questions about mortality and fertility transitions, migration, urbanization, and social inequality. It adds a spatial dimension to the analysis of temporal processes and a temporal element to spatial processes. Chapters cover a broad range of geographical settings, including the United States, Europe, Latin America, and the Islamic world, and span time periods from the eighteenth to twentieth century. Contributors from a variety of disciplines reveal the complexity of factors involved in population processes that spread across space and unfold over time, and demonstrate a rich set of tools with which to explore, analyze, and test the spatial and temporal dynamics of these phenomena. The theories, methods, and substantive findings presented here provide new lenses through which to view time and space in population studies, offering useful models and valuable insights to demographers and other social scientists exploring both historical and contemporary questions about population dynamics anywhere in the world.

Book Synopsis A Handbook and Reader of Ottoman Arabic by : Mohamed Ahmed
Download or read book A Handbook and Reader of Ottoman Arabic written by Mohamed Ahmed and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written forms of Arabic composed during the era of the Ottoman Empire present an immensely fruitful linguistic topic. Extant texts display a proximity to the vernacular that cannot be encountered in any other surviving historical Arabic material, and thus provide unprecedented access to Arabic language history. This rich material remains very little explored. Traditionally, scholarship on Arabic has focussed overwhelmingly on the literature of the various Golden Ages between the 8th and 13th centuries, whereas texts from the 15th century onwards have often been viewed as corrupted and not worthy of study. The lack of interest in Ottoman Arabic culture and literacy left these sources almost completely neglected in university courses. This volume is the first linguistic work to focus exclusively on varieties of Christian, Jewish and Muslim Arabic in the Ottoman Empire of the 15th to the 20th centuries, and present Ottoman Arabic material in a didactic and easily accessible way. Split into a Handbook and a Reader section, the book provides a historical introduction to Ottoman literacy, translation studies, vernacularisation processes, language policy and linguistic pluralism. The second part contains excerpts from more than forty sources, edited and translated by a diverse network of scholars. The material presented includes a large number of yet unedited texts, such as Christian Arabic letters from the Prize Paper collections, mercantile correspondence and notebooks found in the Library of Gotha, and Garshuni texts from archives of Syriac patriarchs.
Book Synopsis Genèse médiévale de l'anthroponymie moderne. Tome I by : Collectif

This book was released on 2020-01-24 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Tome III by : Collectif
Download or read book Genèse médiévale de l'anthroponymie moderne. Tome III written by Collectif and published by Presses universitaires François-Rabelais. This book was released on 2020-01-24 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Church, Law, and Society in Catalonia, 900-1500 by : Paul Freedman
Download or read book Church, Law, and Society in Catalonia, 900-1500 written by Paul Freedman and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book concerns Catalonia, the north-eastern part of the Iberian peninsula, during the Middle Ages. Centered around the great port city of Barcelona, Catalonia formed the richest and culturally most advanced part of what became the kingdom of Aragon, and extended its commercial and political power throughout the Mediterranean. Two themes in particular are emphasized: the role of the Catalan church in its society, and the condition of the peasantry, especially with respect to serfdom. Questions of episcopal power in relation to monasteries, urban society and the state are discussed in the first eight articles. The remainder consider the reasons for peasant servitude in a region that had previously enjoyed a free system of land tenure. In addition, the essays aim to compare the experience of Catalonia with the more widely-studied realms of northern Europe and with the other Spanish kingdoms.

Download or read book A Grammar of Signs written by Osvaldo Cavallar and published by Robbins Collection University of California. This book was released on 1994 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bartolo da Sassoferrato (1314-57) is considered the preeminent jurist of the late Middle Ages, & his DE INSIGNIIS ET ARMIS is hailed as the foundational treatment of the heraldic arms & insignia central to the proper ranking of late medieval & early modern aristocracies. It quickly became an authoritative & influential source for all later works on heraldic questions & is still cited in contemporary manuals. The tract also includes a groundbreaking discussion of the use, ownership, & transfer of trademarks. Attacked by humanists as an example of barbaric Latinity, the tract was subjected to a notorious assault by Lorenzo Valla. The authors provide not only a reliable critical edition & first English translation of the tract, as well as a translation of Valla's polemic, but also a challenging & engaging reassessment of its composition, contents, historical context, & reception. This meticulously crafted volume is essential reading for students of the Italian city-states, art history, legal history, & heraldry. $30.00 HARDCOVER, 200 PAGES, ILLUSTRATED. Book Synopsis Marriage Alliance in Late Medieval Florence by : Anthony Molho
Download or read book Marriage Alliance in Late Medieval Florence written by Anthony Molho and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molho (European history, Brown U.) shows that the propertied families of late-medieval and early-modern Florence maintained their power and influence through arranged marriage and the dowry. While elsewhere in Europe the elite were toppling under the onslaught of commerce and personal freedom, in Florence they married carefully within a narrow and well-defined class, used dowries as both speculation and instruments of manipulation, and remembered every detail for a long time. Download or read book Socio-onomastics written by Terhi Ainiala and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2017-06-09 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume seeks to establish socio-onomastics as a field of linguistic inquiry not only within sociolinguistics, but also, and in particular, within pragmatics. The linguistic study of names has a very long history, but also a history sometimes fraught with skepticism, and thus often neglected by linguists in other fields. The volume takes on the challenge of instituting onomastic study into linguistics and pragmatics by focusing on recent trends within socio-onomastics, interactional onomastics, contact onomastics, folk onomastics, and linguistic landscape studies. The volume is an introduction to these fields – with the introductory chapter giving an overview of, and an update on, recent onomastic study – and in addition offers detailed in-depth analyses of place names, person names, street names and commercial names from different perspectives: historically, as well as from the point of view of the impact of globalization and glocalization. All the chapters focus on the use and function of names and naming, on changes in name usage, and on the reasons for, processes in, and results of names in contact.
