The momentum of the light includes both the linear momentum and angular momentum, which has a spin angular momentum associated with polarization and an orbital part associated with spatial phase distribution. While the angular momentum is along the propagation direction mostly, it is still worth exploring the transverse orbital angular momentum.Light is twisted around the propagation axis in optical vortices, which is characterized by a helical wavefront and a zero intensity in the center. The optical vortices with transverse orbital angular momentum means the spiral phase is applied to the spatiotemporal plane instead of the transverse plane. The degree of circulation could be controlled by given a specific topological charge. We are going to present how to generate a spatiotemporal optical vortex with a controllable intrinsic transverse orbital angular momentum, as well as the phase measurement of the vortices beam. The experiment is also completed and the result matches the theory very well. On this basis, we will introduce the three-dimension measurement of the wave packet. The reconstruction intensity profile will present in this work. The propagarion of ST vortices in the 4f system is also studied. The unique property of optical vortices with transverse angular orbital momentum attracting us to explore more applications in the future, such as high speed optical communications, optical tweezer, and manipulate nanostructures on ultrafast time scales. The result of this work encourages us to move to the next step.

Book excerpt: The contents of the book cover a wide variety of topics related to the analysis of the dynamics of vortices and describe the results of experiments, computational modeling and their interpretation. The book contains 13 chapters reaching areas of physics in vortex dynamics and optical vortices including vortices in superfluid atomic gases, vortex laser beams, vortex-antivortex in ferromagnetic hybrids, and optical vortices illumination in chiral nanostructures. Also, discussions are presented on particle motion in vortex flows, on the simulation of vortex-dominated flows, on vortices in saturable media, on achromatic vortices, and on ultraviolet vortices. Fractal light vortices, coherent vortex beams, together with vortices in electric dipole radiation, and spin wave dynamics in magnetic vortices are examined as well.

Book excerpt: This book deals with applications in several areas of science and technology that make use of light which carries orbital angular momentum. In most practical scenarios, the angular momentum can be decomposed into two independent contributions: the spin angular momentum and the orbital angular momentum. The orbital contribution affords a fundamentally new degree of freedom, with fascinating and wide-spread applications. Unlike spin angular momentum, which is associated with the polarization of light, the orbital angular momentum arises as a consequence of the spatial distribution of the intensity and phase of an optical field, even down to the single photon limit. Researchers have begun to appreciate its implications for our understanding of the ways in which light and matter can interact, and its practical potential in different areas of science and technology.

Specifically, lens systems can provide the spatial phase, thereby changing the orientation of the optical vortex orbital angular momentum by adding torque. The dispersion effect can realize the precise control of the wave packet in the temporal domain. Adjusting the state of the laser to a partial coherent state can explore the effect of randomness on vortices. We also analyzed how the physical parameters of the vortex evolve under variation of each of these conditions, which gives us a general heuristic framework for understanding STOVs phenomena.

Book excerpt: Polarization is a vector nature of light that plays an important role in optical science and engineering. While existing textbook treatments of light assume beams with spatially homogeneous polarization, there is an increasing interest in vectorial optical fields with spatially engineered states of polarization. New effects and phenomena have been predicted and observed for light beams with these unconventional polarization states. This edited review volume aims to provide a comprehensive overview and summarize the latest developments in this important emerging field of optics. This book will cover the fundamentals including mathematical and physical descriptions, experimental generation, manipulation, focusing, propagation, and the applications of the engineered vectorial optical fields in focal field engineering, plasmonic focusing and optical antenna, single molecular imaging, optical tweezers/trapping, as well as optical measurements and instrumentations.

Book excerpt: As in all nonlinear optics, control over the spatial phase of the fundamental light fields allows extensive influence on the well-established effect of High-Har monic Generation (HHG). This results in the realisation of coherent extreme ultraviolet (XUV) light with unique properties. Christian Kern shows and discusses in his thesis two schemes where phase shaping of ultrashort laser pulses is appli ed on scales below their fundamental wavelength. He shows the limitations of how nanoplasmonic objects can be administered for strong field physics. Furthermore, a novel approach of producing XUV light carrying orbital angular momentum via HHG is demonstrated and experimentally verified.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical vortices are singularities in phase fronts of laser beams. They are characterized by a dark core due to phase dislocation emanating from the zero in field. A "charge" can be associated with the dislocation, the sign of which changes depending on whether the phase increases or decreases by an integer multiple of 2[pi] upon circling the zero. The object of the research presented in this dissertation was to explore ways for triggering or exploding a higher order vortex and to examine arithmetic properties of optical vortices using analytical and numerical methods. Diffractive optical masks can be produced to generate complex array patterns. Horizontal and vertical shift of complex patterns can be done with great ease. Rouche's theorem was used for analyzing and then providing a means for dramatically modifying a vortex structure for vortex-order conversion. We also report an efficient method for destroying an optical vortex. We have shown how fabricating masks for observing vortices in the complex space (off the real plane) one can super resolve submicron sized features. The results presented in the thesis offer us a better understanding of dynamics of exploded vortices which may result in application in optical switching, optical data storage, manipulation of micro particles and free-space data communication.

However, it is only over the last decade or so that physically realizable laboratory light beams have been used to study the orbital angular momentum of light. In many respects, orbital and spin angular momentum behave in a similar manner, but t

Book excerpt: Addressed mainly to physicist and chemical physicist, this textbook is the result of a broad compilation of current knowledge on analytical properties of Airy functions. In particular, the calculus implying the Airy functions is developed with care. In the latter chapters, examples are given to succinctly illustrate the use of Airy functions in classical and quantum physics. The physicist, for instance in fluid mechanics, can find what he is looking for, in the references for works of molecular physics or in physics of surfaces, and vice versa. The knowledge on Airy functions is frequently reviewed. The reason may be found in the need to express a physical phenomenon in terms of an effective and comprehensive analytical form for the whole scientific community./a

It reflects three and a half years of research carried out by leading specialists in the area within the Quantum Imaging network, a research programme of the European Community. Quantum Imaging is a newly born branch of quantum optics that investigates the ultimate performance limits of optical imaging allowed by the laws of quantum mechanics. Using the methods and techniques from quantum optics, quantum imaging addresses the questions of image formation, processing and detection with sensitivity and resolution exceeding the limits of classical imaging.
