Book excerpt: The structure, thermochemistry, isomerization and dissociation of the CH2BH2 and CH3BH radicals, cations and anions have been explored with a wide range of ab initio levels of computational theory and their formation has been probed by tandem mass spectrometry and RRKM kinetic theory. Calculations predict that CH2B H2+ is not an equilibrium structure on the potential energy surface. The CH3B H+ was characterized by its collision-induced dissociation mass spectrum and neutralization-reionization (NR) mass spectrometry was used to generate the CH3B H radical. While both CH2B H2 and CH3B H are stable with respect to isomerization and dissociation, a relatively low barrier to the 1,2-hydrogen shift means that pure CH3B H can only be made cold, and so the above NR experiment likely produces a mixture of neutrals, of which only CH3B H can be reionized. Vertical electron attachment to CH3B H is endothermic which means the CH3B H- anion is unlikely to be made from the cation or radical. In addition, the anion lies in a shallow well of only 48 kJ mol-1 and will undergo fast isomerization to CH2B H2- below the dissociation limit. The B(N(CH3)2)3 radical cation and dication structures and dissociation products have been investigated by high level ab initio calculations and experimentally characterized by tandem mass spectrometry. The KER was measured for the metastable dissociation products of the B(N(CH 3)2)3 dication. There were four observed dissociation channels, two involving neutral losses and two involving charge separations. The neutral loss channels successfully compete with the charge separations, the dominant process actually being neutral loss of H2. The KER for the four metastable dissociations were determined to be T0.5(141++) = 368 +/- 18 meV, T0.5(127++) = 144 +/- 12 meV, Th (99+) = 2365 +/- 156 meV, Th(44+) = 2046 +/- 279 meV, and Th(128+) = 1942 +/- 332 meV.

Book excerpt: A detailed analysis is presented of the rate laws expected for Lewis acid-base gas phase association reactions at pressures above several mm Hg. It is shown that in a competive system (B2 and B3 competing for A) the ratio of association rate constants, k3/k2, is given by (AB3/AB2)(B2/B3), irrespective of the relative efficiencies for stabilization of the vibrationally excited AB3 and AB2 by internal energy conversion vs energy transfer to the ambient gas. However, if the latter process were to dominate, the measured (k3/k2) would depend on the nature of the ambient gas. An experimental procedure was developed for measuring the relative amounts of salt produced in a competitive system, based on IR analyses of acetonitrile solutions of the mixed salts. This procedure is particularly applicable to systems in which the residual gases are preferentially absorbed in the solids produced. Data on the (CH3)3N - (CH3)2HN BF3 system are presented. The results show that at room temperature the ratio of association rate constants, k3/k2 = 0.89 = 0.17, over the range 3 to 43 mm Hg total pressure. This ratio rose slightly (to 0.95) at about 0.6 mm Hg, the lowest pressure studied. (Author).

The volume directly com plements the earlier "Boron Compounds" 3rd Supplement Volume 2. In the original literature, alternative formulations are frequently used for the same com pound. This is especially true for many borates. Often, these species are neither completely heteropolar nor covalent, and an experimentally based decision has not been made. Hence, the use of brackets does not necessarily reflect a truly salt-like character. Book excerpt: The modern materialist approach to life has conspicuously failed to explain such central mind-related features of our world as consciousness, intentionality, meaning, and value. This failure to account for something so integral to nature as mind, argues philosopher Thomas Nagel, is a major problem, threatening to unravel the entire naturalistic world picture, extending to biology, evolutionary theory, and cosmology. Since minds are features of biological systems that have developed through evolution, the standard materialist version of evolutionary biology is fundamentally incomplete. And the cosmological history that led to the origin of life and the coming into existence of the conditions for evolution cannot be a merely materialist history, either. An adequate conception of nature would have to explain the appearance in the universe of materially irreducible conscious minds, as such. Nagel's skepticism is not based on religious belief or on a belief in any definite alternative. In Mind and Cosmos, he does suggest that if the materialist account is wrong, then principles of a different kind may also be at work in the history of nature, principles of the growth of order that are in their logical form teleological rather than mechanistic. In spite of the great achievements of the physical sciences, reductive materialism is a world view ripe for displacement. Nagel shows that to recognize its limits is the first step in looking for alternatives, or at least in being open to their possibility.
