Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book in General Zoology In offering to the educational public this text-book in general zoology, with the guide for laboratory and field work designed to be used in connection with it, we desire to explain in brief the method of construction we have followed. The treatment Of the phyla is in a descending order from the Arthropoda to the Protozoa, and in an ascending order from the fishes to man, with the exception that the Mollusca are described after instead of before the Arthropoda. After many years Of experience with classes of young students we believe that an order of treatment resembling this is likely to yield the best results, although we do not deny that good results may be Obtained with young students by following what is sometimes called the order of evolution, beginning with the Protozoa. Although the chapters are interdependent, we think that there is sufficient unity in each to make it possible for the teacher to diverge from the order we have employed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Principles Zoology But meanwhile the subject of Zoology has widened 1, for, apart from its relations to man, Zoology has to explain the organization of animals and their relations to one another. This is a rich field for scientific activity; its enormous range is a consequence, on the one hand, of the well-nigh exhaustless variety of animal organization, and, on the other hand, of the different points of view from which the zoologist enters upon the solution of his problem. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Parasitology and General Zoology These views are highly interesting, and based as they are upon the work of experienced investigators demand careful consideration. That the results obtained by these observers involve the general con elusion that the islets cannot be regarded as in any sense a tissue sui generis appears to me however, premature, and ex parte in the sense that such a conclusion does not allow 'for certain established facts in the morphology of these structures. I propose therefore to deal briefly with some of the difficulties which appear to me to lie in the way of a full acceptance of this conclusion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide for Laboratory and Field Work in Zoology: For Use in Connection With a Text-Book in General Zoölogy Questions have been arranged both in the form of numbered and unnumbered paragraphs in order that teachers may com pare the two methods; for better comparison the directions for the study of the living locust and the living frog have been printed in both ways. It will be noticed that drawings are required of the pupil after he has studied the animal, and that emphasis is laid on drawings showing the parts in their proper relation in the animal body; in only a few cases, where certain organs cannot be clearly shown in the body, are they to be separated and made the subject of a distinct drawing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from College Zoology This book is intended to serve as a text for beginning students in universities and colleges, or for students who have already taken a course in general biology and wish to gain a more com prehensive View of the animal kingdom. It differs from many of the college textbooks of zoology now on the market in several important respects: (1) the animals and their organs are not only described, but their functions are pointed out; (2) the ani mals described are in most cases native species; and (3) the relations of the animals to man are emphasized. Besides serv ing as a textbook, it is believed that this book will be of interest to the general reader, since it gives a bird's-eye View of the entire animal kingdom as we know it at the present time. Within the past decade there has been a tendency for teachers of zoology to pay less attention to morphology and more to physiology. As a prominent morphologist recently said. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Directions in General Zoölogy These directions are a revision and extension Of publications by the senior author in 1912 and 1913, and by Curtis and Dodds in 1919. Beginning as printed outlines intended only for use in the University of Missouri, they have come into use in a number of other institutions, and it now seems desirable to provide for more general distribution. The present edition is, therefore, an outcome of some twenty years' development of the introductory course in Zoology at the University of Missouri. It is the result of progressive experimentation in both form and content. The authors know it works with underclass students in such an institution, because it is the product of so much experience, not only their own but also that Of their colleagues and assistants, who have contributed to each revision. The course, as given at the University of Missouri, occupies one semester and consists Of three two-hour laboratory periods and two one-hour lecture periods with time for quizzes taken from both. This is, of course, woefully inadequate for a well-rounded introduction to zoology, but is perhaps as much as can be expected where students in the College Of Arts and Science are expected to meet a similar require ment in physical science. Obviously, the present volume includes more than can be undertaken within these limits. It has been made more comprehensive, because the authors have Often found it desirable to vary the content in their own laboratory work and because a publica tion for general use may properly include more than the minimum needs of a Single institution. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Directions for an Elementary Course in General Zoology An attempt has been made to secure a fair distribution of emphasis through a number of the more important aspects of the subject. The directions are so organized that the field work and laboratory study based upon it may be used either at the open ing or toward the close of the course, depending upon the time of year when the course is started. More work is outlined than is usually covered in a half-year course, thus allowing some choice of materials on the part of the instructor. A number of the outlines are intentionally brief. These offer opportunity of directing the student in a comparative study of forms closely related to others which have been treated in greater detail. The writer is indebted to Professor S. H. Gage for the use of the figure of the compound microscope. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
