Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2013 marks the centenary of the Church of England’s established process for selecting candidates for ordained ministry – a process that the Ministry Division still uses today. The Testing of Vocation is a comprehensive and detailed study that will provide an essential reference volume for historians and all students of the vocation and ministry in today’s Church. It explores in detail the Church of England’s concept of vocation and how it has developed over the century in response to changes in society and in the church. It examines the changing approaches to ordained ministry in the aftermath of two world wars; in response to declining numbers and the closure of theological colleges; in the light of new developments such as the ordination of women and the advent of non-stipendiary ministry (an innovation suggested by Archbishop Michael Ramsey) and ordained local ministry. This unique and comprehensive record is authorised by the Ministry Division of the Church of England.

Download or read book Sacred Worlds written by Chris Park and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-11-01 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, the first in the field for two decades, looks at the relationships between geography and religion. It represents a synthesis of research by geographers of many countries, mainly since the 1960s. No previous book has tackled this emerging field from such a broad, interdisciplinary perspective, and never before have such a variety of detailed case studies been pulled together in so comparative or illuminating a way. Examples and case studies have been drawn from all the major world religions and from all continents from both a historical and contemporary perspective. Major themes covered in the book include the distribution of religion and the processes by which religion and religious ideas spread through space and time. Some of the important links between religion and population are also explored. A great deal of attention is focused on the visible manifestations of religion on the cultural landscape, including landscapes of worship and of death, and the whole field of sacred space and religious pilgrimage.

Book Synopsis Translation and Cultural Change by : Eva Hung
Download or read book Translation and Cultural Change written by Eva Hung and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2005-05-26 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History tells us that translation plays a part in the development of all cultures. Historical cases also show us repeatedly that translated works which had real social and cultural impact often bear little resemblance to the idealized concept of a ‘good translation’. Since the perception and reception of translated works — as well as the translation norms which are established through contest and/or consensus — reflect the concerns, preferences and aspirations of their host cultures, they are never static or homogenous even within a given culture. This book is dedicated to exploring some of the factors in the interplay of culture and translation, with an emphasis on translation activities outside the Anglo-European tradition, particularly in China and Japan.
Book Synopsis The Cult of St Anna in Byzantium by : Eirini Panou
Download or read book The Cult of St Anna in Byzantium written by Eirini Panou and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-11 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cult of St Anna in Byzantium is the first undertaking in Byzantine research to study the phenomenon of St Anna’s cult from the sixth to the fifteenth centuries. It was prompted by the need to enrich our knowledge of a female saint who had already been studied in the West but remained virtually unknown in Eastern Christendom. It focuses on a figure little-studied in scholarship and examines the formation, establishment and promotion of an apocryphal saint who made her way to the pantheon of Orthodox saints. Visual and material culture, relics and texts track the gradual social and ideological transformation of Byzantium from early Christianity until the fifteenth century. This book not only examines various aspects of early Christian and Byzantine civilisation, but also investigates how the cult of saints greatly influenced cultural changes in order to suit theological, social and political demands. The cult of St Anna influenced many diverse elements of Christian life in Constantinople, including the creation of sacred spaces and the location of haghiasmata (fountains of holy water) in the city; imperial patronage; the social reception of St Anna’s story; and relic narratives. This monograph breaks new ground in explaining how and why Byzantium and the Orthodox Church attributed scriptural authority to a minor figure known only from a non-canonical work.
