Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book reviews the dramatic recent advances in the use of optical resonators for high sensitivity and high resolution molecular spectroscopy as well as for chemical, mechanical and physical sensing. It encompasses a variety of cavities including those made of two or more mirrors, optical fiber loops, fiber gratings and spherical cavities. The book focuses on novel techniques and their applications. Each chapter is written by an expert and/or pioneer in the field. These experts also provide the theoretical background in optics and molecular physics where needed. Examples of recent breakthroughs include the use of frequency combs (Nobel prize 2005) for cavity enhanced sensing and spectroscopy, the use of novel cavity materials and geometries, the development of optical heterodyne detection techniques combined to active frequency-locking schemes. These methods allow the use and interrogation of optical resonators with a variety of coherent light sources for trace gas detection and sensing of strain, temperature and pressure.
Book Synopsis Universal Śaivism by : Peter Bisschop
Download or read book Universal Śaivism written by Peter Bisschop and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-09-04 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Universal Śaivism Peter Bisschop provides a critical edition and annotated translation of the sixth chapter of the Śivadharmaśāstra `Treatise on the Religion of Śiva’, the so-called Śāntyadhyāya 'Chapter on Appeasement’. The Sanskrit text is preceded by an extensive introduction on its composition, transmission and edition. The Śivadharmaśāstra has arguably played a crucial role in the formation, development and institutionalisation of Śaivism. Through a detailed study of its extensive śānti mantra, Peter Bisschop shows how the text advocates a system in which all worldly and cosmic power is ultimately dependent upon Śiva. The mantra itself is a mine of information on the evolving pantheon of early Brahmanical Hinduism. Thanks to generous support of the J. Gonda Fund Foundation, the e-book version of this volume is available in Open Access.
Book Synopsis The Ancient Egyptian Pyramid Texts by : James P. Allen
Download or read book The Ancient Egyptian Pyramid Texts written by James P. Allen and published by Society of Biblical Lit. This book was released on 2007-08-30 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pyramid Texts are the oldest body of extant literature from ancient Egypt. First carved on the walls of the burial chambers in the pyramids of kings and queens of the Old Kingdom, they provide the earliest comprehensive view of the way in which the ancient Egyptians understood the structure of the universe, the role of the gods, and the fate of human beings after death. Their importance lies in their antiquity and in their endurance throughout the entire intellectual history of ancient Egypt. This volume contains the complete translation of the Pyramid Texts, including new texts recently discovered and published. It incorporates full restorations and readings indicated by post-Old Kingdom copies of the texts and is the first translation that presents the texts in the order in which they were meant to be read in each of the original sources.
Book Synopsis Physical Methods to Characterize Pharmaceutical Proteins by : James N. Herron
Download or read book Physical Methods to Characterize Pharmaceutical Proteins written by James N. Herron and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proteins are still gaining importance in the pharmaceutical world, where they are used to improve our arsenal of therapeutic drugs and vaccines and as diagnostic tools. Proteins are different from "traditional" low-molecular-weight drugs. As a group, they exhibit a number of biopharmaceutical and formulation problems. These problems have drawn considerable interest from both industrial and aca demic environments, forcing pharmaceutical scientists to explore a domain previ ously examined only by peptide and protein chemists. Biopharmaceutical aspects of proteins, e.g., low oral bioavailability, have been extensively investigated. Although all possible conventional routes of ad ministration have been examined for proteins, no real, generally applicable alter native to parenteral administration in order to achieve systemic effects has yet been discovered. Several of these biopharmaceutical options have been discussed in Volume 4 of this series, Biological Barriers to Protein Delivery. Proteins are composed of many amino acids, several of which are notorious for their chemical instability. Rational design of formulations that optimize the native structure and/or bioactivity of a protein is therefore of great importance when long shelf life is required, as it is for pharmaceutical products. This issue has also been examined in two prior volumes of this series: Volume 2: Stability of Protein Pharmaceuticals (Part A) and Volume 5: Stability and Characterization of Protein and Peptide Drugs.

Book Synopsis A Linguistic History of Arabic by : Jonathan Owens
Download or read book A Linguistic History of Arabic written by Jonathan Owens and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-05-11 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Linguistic History of Arabic presents a reconstruction of proto-Arabic by the methods of historical-comparative linguistics. It challenges the traditional conceptualization of an old, Classical language evolving into the contemporary Neo-Arabic dialects. Professor Owens combines established comparative linguistic methodology with a careful reading of the classical Arabic sources, such as the grammatical and exegetical traditions. He arrives at a richer and more complex picture of early Arabic language history than is current today and in doing so establishes the basis for a comprehensive, linguistically-based understanding of the history of Arabic. The arguments are set out in a concise, case by case basis, making it accessible to students and scholars of Arabic and Islamic culture, as well as to those studying Arabic and historical linguists.
Book Synopsis Hot Cracking Phenomena in Welds III by : John Lippold
Download or read book Hot Cracking Phenomena in Welds III written by John Lippold and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-05-03 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third in a series of compendiums devoted to the subject of weld hot cracking. It contains 22 papers presented at the 3rd International Hot Cracking Workshop in Columbus, Ohio USA in March 2010. In the context of this workshop, the term “hot cracking” refers to elevated temperature cracking associated with either the weld metal or heat-affected zone. These hot cracking phenomena include weld solidification cracking, HAZ and weld metal liquation cracking, and ductility-dip cracking. The book is divided into three major sections based on material type; specifically aluminum alloys, steels, and nickel-base alloys. Each of these sections begins with a keynote paper from prominent researchers in the field: Dr. Sindo Kou from the University of Wisconsin, Dr. Thomas Böllinghaus from BAM and the University of Magdeburg, and Dr. John DuPont from Lehigh University. The papers contained within include the latest insight into the mechanisms associated with hot cracking in these materials and methods to prevent cracking through material selection, process modification, or other means. The three Hot Cracking Phenomena in Welds compendiums combined contain a total of 64 papers and represent the best collection of papers on the topic of hot cracking ever assembled.
