Book excerpt: A survey was made of the basic aerodynamics and materials data for the study of thermal structures. A review was also made of the basic structural theory that has been developed. Ways are suggested in which the designer should use the basic data and theory to decide on the general form of structure in any particular application. A special discussion is made on the new feature in structural design of combining strains due to temperature and strains due to load. Special emphasis is placed upon its effect on design requirements. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humanity has long been fascinated by the planet Mars. Was its climate ever conducive to life? What is the atmosphere like today and why did it change so dramatically over time? Eleven spacecraft have successfully flown to Mars since the Viking mission of the 1970s and early 1980s. These orbiters, landers and rovers have generated vast amounts of data that now span a Martian decade (roughly eighteen years). This new volume brings together the many new ideas about the atmosphere and climate system that have emerged, including the complex interplay of the volatile and dust cycles, the atmosphere-surface interactions that connect them over time, and the diversity of the planet's environment and its complex history. Including tutorials and explanations of complicated ideas, students, researchers and non-specialists alike are able to use this resource to gain a thorough and up-to-date understanding of this most Earth-like of planetary neighbours.

Book excerpt: This monograph deals with systematic studies of all relevant thermal aspects of the Tibetan Plateau, including terrestrial heat flow measures, distribution pattern of observed heat flow along a N-S profile, crust-mantle thermal structure, and North-Middle-South triple heterogeneity across the whole plateau. Main emphasis has been put on the close correlation between thermal and comprehensive geophysical fields and the intrinsic genetic linkage between tectonic deformation of terranes and thereby induced deep-seated and superficial theral activities and responses. This new approach, in combination with available geoscientific research results, has led to a synthetic idea of integrated tectonothermal evolution of the Tibetan Plateau.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Treatise on Geophysics: Mantle Dynamics, Volume 7 aims to provide both a classical and state-of-the-art introduction to the methods and science of mantle dynamics, as well as survey leading order problems (both solved and unsolved) and current understanding of how the mantle works. It is organized around two themes: (1) how is mantle convection studied; and (2) what do we understand about mantle dynamics to date. The first four chapters are thus concerned with pedagogical reviews of the physics of mantle convection; laboratory studies of the fluid dynamics of convection relevant to the mantle; theoretical analysis of mantle dynamics; and numerical analysis and methods of mantle convection. The subsequent chapters concentrate on leading issues of mantle convection itself, which include the energy budget of the mantle; the upper mantle and lithosphere in and near the spreading center (mid-ocean ridge) environment; the dynamics of subducting slabs; hot spots, melting anomalies, and mantle plumes; and finally, geochemical mantle dynamics and mixing. Self-contained volume starts with an overview of the subject then explores each topic in detail Extensive reference lists and cross references with other volumes to facilitate further research Full-color figures and tables support the text and aid in understanding Content suited for both the expert and non-expert

This book was released on 1977 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electron densities and temperatures as well as omnidirectional fluxes of hyperthermal positive ions (E > 28 eV) were measured by means of spherical Langmuir probes aboard INJUN 5 at altitudes > 2000 km during a major geomagnetic storm. The electron density in the mid-latitude trough decreased and the temperatures increased during the early phases of the storm. As the storm progressed the trough's position moves equatorward with plasma depletions being observed to an invariant latitude of 40 deg during the early recovery phase. The latitude of the transition between heavy and light ion dominance also moved equatorward, but recovered at a rate slower than that of the electron trough's position. Hyperthermal ions detected in the vicinity of the trough were ring current particles reaching to the satellite's altitude. The minimum thermal electron densities in the trough were found to be within 1 deg of latitude of the maximum ring current flux. Maximum electron temperatures were measured several degrees equatorward of this position. INJUN 5 electron temperatures are compared with those measured by Alouette 2 over the reported positions of SAR arcs. The observations are also used to further evaluate a method developed for calculating the position of the ring current using ground magnetic fluctuations.

An Introduction to Severe Storms and Hazardous Weather is an exciting new textbook that allows students to learn the principles of atmospheric science through the drama, exhilaration, and even tragedy of severe weather. Balancing breadth and depth, Jeffrey B. Halverson adeptly combines a short, accessible introduction to the basic principles of meteorology with detailed coverage on large- and small-scale weather hazards. He draws on specific up-to-date case studies from North America to illustrate the cause of meteorological events including hurricanes, heavy snow and ice, floods, and tornadoes. Unlike existing books on the market, Halverson delves deep into the societal impacts of these events, drawing on examples from agriculture, utility infrastructure, and commercial aviation. Each chapter also features high-quality, customized color artwork by Thomas D. Rabenhorst that helps to enhance and embed learning. Thorough in its scope, and written with an impeccable focus on the science, this book will be an essential resource for introductory undergraduate courses in severe weather, natural hazards, and extreme meteorology. It is also an excellent supplemental textbook for courses on meteorology and atmospheric science.
