Book excerpt: The passage of the Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act (IDEA) calls for the education of children with special needs in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE). Interpretation of what constitutes the Least Restrictive Environment has led to debate about how best to include children with disabilities into regular education environments. The process of inclusion has created an environment in which educators have conflicting feelings about the various types of special education placements. At one extreme are those who advocate all students belong in the general classroom all the time. At the other end of the continuum are those that contend only those students who meet certain standards should be educated in the general curriculum. The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of high school students, parents, and teachers regarding programs and various placements established for children with high incidence disabilities in both public and private school venues. In this phenomenological study, the guided interview approach was used to examine the perceptions of disabled students, their parents, and their teachers regarding special education placements that included receiving special education services less than 21% of the school day, receiving services 21% to 60% of the school day, receiving services more than 60% of the school day, or receiving services in a separate, private school setting. The findings of this study found that students, parents, and teachers were supportive of the specific learning environment they were most closely related to. Although students had little specific knowledge of their disabilities and services, they were content with the current services they were receiving. Parents had more knowledge of their childs disability and were more vocal about supporting the specific program their child was involved with. Students with disabilities such as Autism, emotional disturbance, specific learning disabilities or other health impairments are often viewed as being unable to be as successful in a general education classroom than their peers. There were 11 participants in this study. Participants were from the northwest corridor of the state. Participants were public school general education teachers. They varied in range from Kindergarten through grade 12. This study reinforces the need for general education teachers to have a better understanding of how to accommodate for students with disabilities in the least restrictive environment. This understanding will give teachers the confidence needed to maintain a positive expectation of students with disabilities in their classrooms. Without adequate teacher preparation, students with disabilities will continue to be placed in more restrictive settings which denies them a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) according to the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA).

Book excerpt: (Purpose) The purpose of this study was to examine the perception of children in the general education classroom of their classmates with developmental and other disabilities. Gender and grade level were evaluated, but more importantly, levels of integration and relationships with people with disabilities were analyzed. (Methodology) Two hundred and fifty one students were administered a short questionnaire. The questionnaire (23 multiple choice, 1 fill in the blank and 1 short essay) was used to determine if a child's perception of children with disability(s) is impacted by: Gender, Grade Level, Level of Integration, and Relationships. (Results) Results indicated no notable relationship between the percent of positively answered questions and grade level. To be noted, however, were the relationships found amongst Level of Integration, Relationships, and Gender. The mean percentage of positively answered questions of the above categories fell within a 2.11% range. However, notable differences were found among the subcategories below: Level of Integration, Relationships and Gender (Level of Integration: x2 (8, n = 3689) = 59.8930, P less than 0.05; Relationships: x2 (14, n = 3596) = 42.2127, P less than 0.05; Gender: x2 (2, n = 3947) = 45.9045, P less than 0.05). No notable relationship was found within the Grade Level category (x2 (4, n = 3765) = 4.1038, P = NS). (Conclusions) The results of the study indicated that a student's perception of people with disabilities is substantially influenced by their gender, relationships with people with disabilities and the level of integration of people with disabilities in their classroom. (Recommendations) Further research should be completed in the area of inclusion of students with disabilities in the general education classroom to further investigate: the effects of integration on the perceptions held by students of people with disabilities; how and why gender can and/or does influence the perception of people with disabilities; the impact of grade level/age on students' perception of people with disabilities; if perceptions of people with disabilities within each gender changes with age; and if a teacher's perceptions of people with disabilities and integration into the general education classroom influences students' perceptions of people with disabilities. Nine appendixes are included: (1) Review of Literature; (2) Student Survey; (3) Teacher Instruction; (4) Student Instruction; (5) Letter to Parents/Consent Form; (6) Letter to Teachers; (7) Institutional Review Board Approval Letter to Test Subjects; (8) Chi Square Test of Independence Tables; and (9) Generic Presentation of Responses to Survey Question by Category. Book excerpt: This study examined general education, special education, and education specialists’ perceptions of whether class climate is affected by the behaviors of students with identified disabilities in inclusion classrooms at the elementary school level. Perceptions of the overall social-emotional interactions of students with identified disabilities were analyzed. A mixed method approach was used to provide teachers who work directly with these students in inclusion settings an opportunity to share their perspective on the interactions of their students with identified disabilities. This mixed method research study was a sequential explanatory design. The majority of the study participants came from public elementary schools in the southeast Pennsylvania metropolitan area. The population for this study was elementary educators who met the following criteria: (1) participants had provided instruction for at least one student with identified disabilities within the confines of an inclusion placement; and (2) participants’ interaction with an inclusion class was not limited to the current school year. Also, the following exclusionary criteria was set – participants who had never taught in an inclusion placement were not included in the study. The participants included 66 education professionals with various certifications including elementary and early childhood education, special education; special subjects (Art, Music, Library, Guidance, ELL, reading specialists, and speech therapist) teachers.

Book excerpt: This study identified the intended and unintended consequences of high-stakes standardized testing for Specific Learning Disabled students and their seventh and eighth grade general and special education teachers. The research was conducted in four rural, south central school districts in two Pennsylvania counties. Data were collected from 11 special education and 26 general education seventh and eighth grade teachers through the use of online surveys and six teacher interviews. The results indicated that the teachers were dedicated to their profession and their students. They were willing to be held accountable for the academic success of their Specific Learning Disabled students. They were willing to participate in new programs and take on additional teaching responsibilities to assist the students. Results generated by high-stakes standardized testing were viewed as valuable for instruction and progress monitoring. In addition to the benefits of the testing, negative influences were also reported. Poor test results' sanctions were viewed as generating testing anxiety and lowered self-esteem in students and job dissatisfaction for the educators. Students who did not achieve proficient or advanced scores on the testing were not provided with educational opportunities that were available to their peers who did achieve advanced or proficient scores. Most of the teachers believed in the necessity of the testing for their SLD students, but did not feel that its benefits outweighed its detractions.
