Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Crop Report as of November 1, 1940 Many fields of late corn, that had been threatened by early frost. Matured with the warm weather and yields are now expected to average bushels per acre, the third highest in 17 years. Estimates of corn production have been raised to bushels an increase of more than 80 million bushels over indications a month ago. The 4 percent improvement in tobacco prospects brings the estimated yield up to the record high yield of 918 pounds per acre secured last year, and raises the estimate of production to pounds, a nearly average crop, On the basis of conditions on hbvember 1, prior to the completion of the fall checkup of a reages harvested, the production estimates for sugar beets and pecans have been increased 5 percent, peanuts 2 percent, and cotton, beans, rice, and potatoes each 1 percent. Expectations of the quantity of sugarcane that will be harvested for sugar have been reduced 11 percent and the estimates for sweet Potatoes; grain sorghum and soybeans 3 to 4 percent. The national crop situation is developing about as expected but there can now be much greater assurance that the excellent cr0ps that have been indicated will actually be secured. Although neither the acreage of crops grown nor the yields secured per acre will equal the wonderful showing made in 1937, cr0p production now seems likely to be larger than in any other season and probably 6 to 7 percent above the predrought average. But the improvement over outturns in exceptionally good crop years such as 1920, 1928, 19319 and 1938 may be only about 1 or 2 percent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Crop Report as of April 1, 1939 Wheat: Farm stocks of all wheat on farms April 1 are estimated to be bushels compared with bushels a.ysar ago, and bushels the 10 - year (1928 - 37) average. The April 1 stocks were the largest since 1926, the earliest available record. The indicated disappearance of all wheat from farm stocks between January 1 and April 1 was bushels compared with bushels for the same period a year ago and bushels the 10 - year (1928-37) average. April 1 farm holdings of wheat by classes amounted to approximately bushels of hard red winter, bushels of soft red winter, bushels of hard red spring, bushels of white (both winter and spring), and bushels of durum. Corn stocks: April 1 stocks of corn on farms are estimated at bushels. Present stocks are the highest of any April 1 since 1926 when April 1 estimates of stocks were first made. These stocks exceed by 4 percent the previous high of bushels on April 1, 1933 and by over 60 percent the 10 - year (1928 - 37) average of bushels. The large stocks this year follow last year's above average April 1 stocks of bushels. For the Corn Belt as a Whole, Government loans reported to April 5 represent over 20 percent of the total April 1 farm stocks in that area. In a number of the Corn Belt States over one-fourth of the April 1 farm stocks are represented by Government loans. The disappearance of farm stocks from January 1 to April 1 this year amounted to bushels com pared with bushels for the same period in 1938 and bushels, the 10 - year (1928 - 37) average. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Crop Report as of November 1, 1939 Pending completion of the fall cheek - up of acreages harvested, exact allowance for loss of acreage cannot be made, but present indicae tions are that the total acreage for all crops harvested was between 3 and 4 percent less than the total last year and lower than in any recent season except the drought years, 1934 and 1936. Yields per acre har vested ln 1939 now seem likely to average slightly higher than in 1938 and 1920 and substantially higher than in any other recar _t years, except 1937. Crop yields per acre this yea r were unusually gnod in the central and eastern Corn Belt but were seriously reduced by drought tfrom southern North Dakota and eastern Wyoming southward hrougr central Texase Another area of low yields extends from the Gulf into Alabama and northeastern Mississippi. Because of the dry fall, additional precipitation is now needed by winter grains over a large part of the Mississippi basin and also east of the Cascades in Washington and Oregon. From central Nebraska southward'into Oklahoma, the need has been urgent. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Crop Report as of January 1, 1940 Rainfall was deficient during December in nearly all important citrus produc ing areas. In Florida, lack of sufficient moisture until late in December retarded sizing, and caused increased dropping in some groves. In Texas, rainfall was light during December. Shipments to date have included a larger percentage of small sizes than last year. Most trees are still holding fruit well, and very little dropping has been reported. In California, weather was unseasonably dry during December. However, rainfall occurred over northern and central California during the first few days of January. Rains are needed in southern California, but because of the heavy rains of last September groves in this section have not suffered materially to date. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Crop Report as of January 1, 1941 In the Corn Belt where large amounts of the 1989 and previous corn creps were carried over, stocks continue unusually heavy. This is (specially true in Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota where re-sealing of old corn on government loan was most extensive. In Iowa for the second successive time January 1 stocks were greater than the previous year's production of corn for grain, -january l, 1941 stocks were 8 percent larger and January 1, 1940 stocks 8 percent greater. In the North Atlantic States January 1 stocks were about 4 percent below those of last year but 6 percent above average. Stocks in the South Atlantic and South Central States were considerably above either those of the previous year or the average and have been exceeded only twice since 1927 when January 1 stocks series were started. In the Western States stocks were about a third larger than January 1 stocks a year ago, but about a tenth smaller than average. Disappearance from farms during the past quarter (october 1-january l) was bushels. Disappearance during the corresponding quarter a year ago was bushels.
