Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although tubular structures are reasonably well understood by designers of offshore platforms, onshore applications often suffer from "learning curve" problems, particularly in the connections, tending to inhibit the wider use of tubes. This book was written primarily to help this situation. Representing 25 years of work by one of the pioneers in the field of tubular structures, the book covers research, synthesis of design criteria, and successful application to the practical design, construction, inspection, and lifetime monitoring of major structures. Written by the principal author of the AWS D1.1 Code Provisions for Tubular Structures this book is intended to be used in conjunction with the AWS Structural Welding Code - Steel, AWS D1.1-88 published by the American Welding Society, Miami, FL, USA. Users of this Code, writers of other codes, students and researchers alike will find it an indispensable source of background material in their work with tubular structures.

Book excerpt: Welding of Tubular Structures focuses on the testing, processes, and techniques involved in welding tubular structures in different environments and conditions. The book stresses that the analysis of weldment testing is valuable to the structural integrity of every welded material. Presenting the literature of various authors who have conducted experiments and tests on this topic, the book starts by outlining the testing measures done on weldments on offshore structures, hangars, towers, and other edifices. These discussions are backed up by numerical representations to support the claims of authors, particularly on the effectiveness of the techniques used in welding. The book also presents a comparative study on the behavior of steel, aluminum, and other materials when subjected to stress. This discussion is followed by experiments to test the strength of the welded materials. Much attention is given when these materials start to crack and suffer from fatigue. With this in consideration, analysis is particularly devoted to the research on why these welded materials fail. The text is a vital source of information to those in the welding sector, particularly those working in offshore structures.

INTRODUCTION AND LITERATURE REVIEW The exploration for oil and gas in ever increasing water depths has given an impetus to research efforts on the behaviour of offshore structures under ocean environment. These structures are continuously subjected to environmental loading because of waves, wind and current. A response analysis is required to assess the safety of offshore structure under severe storm conditions as well as for estimation of damage caused by less severe but more frequently occuring sea states. A majority of the reported failures in the life time of offshore structures are in fact fatigue failures. The offshore structures are usually built in the form of welded tubular structures. The joints of these tubular members experience the fatigue damage mainly due to small defects in welding which act as crack initiators, high stress concentrations and the variable loads. The variable loads due to the ocean waves cause cyclic stress variation in the structural members and the accumu lated effect of these stresses results in the fatigue failure.

The contributions to the conference offer a unique overview of many areas of technology from research and development studies to construction and operation, and as such provide a comprehensive reference source. This volume contains 44 papers organized into eight sections. Section I contains studies on materials and weldability of steels for energy structures. Section II covers welding techniques such as flux-cored arc welding, root pass welding, and automatic welding. Section III on welding control systems includes studies on such as integrated robotic welding and microprocessor technology in automatic integrated welding systems. Sections IV and V presents studies on welding of high-alloy systems and welding procedure optimization, respectively. Section VI covers quality assurance and inspection of piping systems. Section VII takes up the properties of welds. Section VIII presents stress and strain analyses of welds.

Book excerpt: The Lloyd’s Register Technical Association (LRTA) was established in 1920 with the primary objective of sharing technical expertise and knowledge within Lloyd’s Register. Publications have consistently been released on a yearly basis, with a brief interruption between 1938 and 1946. These publications serve as a key reference point for best practices and were initially reserved for internal use to maximise LR’s competitive advantage. Today, the LRTA takes a fresh approach, focusing on collaboration by combining professional expertise from across LRF & Group to ensure a frequent output of fresh perspectives and relevant content. The LRTA has evolved into a Group-wide initiative that identifies, captures, and shares knowledge spanning various business streams and functions. To support this modern approach, the LRTA has adopted a new structure featuring representatives and senior governance across the business streams and the LR Foundation. The Lloyd's Register Technical Association Papers should be seen as historical documents representing earlier viewpoints and are not reflective of current thinking and perspectives by the current LR Technical Association.
