His wife was Elizabeth Thompson also born in Yorkshire, England on Aug. 17, 1816. By 1846 they had three sons and at this time decided to immigrate to United States. Their fourth child, a daughter, was born at sea. The Hakeman family arrived in New York in 1849. William Edward (1849-1934) was the fifth child of the above emigrant couple. He married Mary Elizabeth Holden on Oct. 31, 1870 in Monte- zuma, Iowa. She was the daughter of Sanford and Mary Ann Lyman Holden. The Hakemans moved to Iowa in 1885. The Holdens were of German descent, and lived in Pennsylvania until 1855 when they moved to Iowa. Mary Elizabeth died 1928 at the age of 79. This couple had ten children born to them. Descendants live presently in 29 different states, among them Iowa, Ohio, California, Arkansas, etc.
