Book excerpt: Red-eared slider turtles (REST), Trachemys scripta elegans (Neuwied, 1839) are turtles that are commonly kept at homes as pets. They are semi-aquatic by nature, found in the warm waters and are strong underwater swimmers. They are basically omnivores. The younger turtles are more dependent on animal protein, while the adults lean towards a vegetarian diet. The males are a little smaller in size than the females, but they have sharp claws on the front legs. Their tails are also longer than those of the females. The male reaches it sexual maturity between 2-4 years and the female up to 3-4 years. The females come ashore and deposit 80-200 eggs. They may be silent carriers of Salmonella, which is very contagious for young children in the house. They are also found to carry protozoan and bacterial infections with them. The carapace is dark green with yellow markings, and the plastron (under shell) is yellow with some dark rings, blotches or swirls. Determine a turtles' age, have to count the scutes on a turtle's carapace. Pond turtles are found throughout most of the USA, Mexico and Central America. They are also found in South America, Australia and most of the parts of Asia.
