Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decision making by woman is an indicator of her status in the household. These decisions in households range from trivial issues like decision making about daily purchases to issues like deciding the number of children which have serious consequences in women's health. The men always have some views regarding the decision making role of their wives in the household. A greater communication between men and women will encourage the husbands to develop egalitarian views and attitude towards wives' decision making. The book has been organized into four main chapters. The first chapter gives an in-detail description of the National Family Health Survey (2005-06), followed by discussion of the concept of empowerment of women put forward by NFHS-3 as well as the different scholars through an extensive literature review. The second chapter elaborates different aspects of methodology for the purpose of research in this study. The third chapter deals with the results and discussion after analyzing both the primary and secondary data. The fourth chapter provides a summary of the findings of the study.

Book excerpt: Gender encompasses biological sex but extends beyond it to the socially prescribed roles deemed appropriate for each sex by the culture in which we live. The gender roles we each carry out are highly individualistic, built on our biological and physical traits, appearance and personality, life experiences such as childhood, career and education, and history of sexual and romantic interactions. Each element influences perceptions and expectations. Gender-related experiences influence and shape the ways we think about others and ourselves including self-image, behaviour, mood, social advancement and coping strategies. This new book brings together leading international research devoted to this subject.

Book excerpt: “An authoritative guide to help women navigate the workplace and their everyday life with greater success and impact” (Forbes). So, you’ve earned a seat at the table. What happens next? We all face hard decisions every day—and the choices we make, and how others perceive them, can be life changing. There are countless books on how to make those tough calls, but How Women Decide is the first to examine a much overlooked truth: Men and women reach verdicts differently, and often in surprising ways. Stress? It makes women more focused. Confidence? Caution can lead to stronger resolutions. And despite popular misconceptions, women are just as decisive as men—though they may pay for it. Pulling from the latest science on decision-making, as well as lively stories of real women and their experiences, cognitive scientist Therese Huston teaches us how we can better shape our habits, perceptions, and strategies, not just to make the most of our own opportunities, but to reform the culture and bring out the best results—regardless of who’s behind them.

This book is a collection of fictionalized case studies of everyday ethical dilemmas and challenges encountered in the process of conducting global health research in places where the effects of political and economic inequality are particularly evident. It is a training tool to fill the gap between research ethics guidelines and their implementation "on the ground." The cases focus on "relational" ethics: ethical actions and ideas that continuously emerge through relations with others, rather than being determined by bioethics regulation. They are based on stories and experiences collected by a group of social anthropologists who have worked with leading transnational medical research organizations across Africa in the past decade. Accompanied by guidelines, discussion questions and selected further readings, the book provides a flexible resource for training and self-study for people engaged in health research with, universities, international collaborative sites and NGOs - and for everyone interested in the realities of global health research today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this collection deploy biological and social scientific perspectives to evaluate the transformative experience of parenthood for today's women and men. They map the similar and distinct roles mothers and fathers play in their children's lives and measure the effect of gendered parenting on child well-being, work and family arrangements, and the quality of couples' relationships. Contributors describe what happens to brains and bodies when women become mothers and men become fathers; whether the stakes are the same or different for each sex; why, across history and cultures, women are typically more involved in childcare than men; why some fathers are strongly present in their children's lives while others are not; and how the various commitments men and women make to parenting shape their approaches to paid work and romantic relationships. Considering recent changes in men's and women's familial duties, the growing number of single-parent families, and the impassioned tenor of same-sex marriage debates, this book adds sound scientific and theoretical insight to these issues, constituting a standout resource for those interested in the causes and consequences of contemporary gendered parenthood.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender matters in American politics, sometimes in obvious ways and sometimes in ways rarely noticed. As manifested in the "gender gap", it inflects political attitudes and behaviors, resulting in distinctive patterns of difference and similarity in the opinions and voting behavior of men and women. It plays a role in public policy decision making on a wide range of issues, not only those related to reproduction and health. Finally, and sometimes very subtly, gender and gendered assumptions influence the operation of governmental institutions from the cabinet to Congress to the courtroom, and the ways those institutions are changing over time. This path-breaking collection of original essays systematically explores the roles of gender in American political life -- how men and women are politically the same and politically different in their attitudes and actions. Among the topics covered are political knowledge; moral decision making; patterns of participation; taxation; gender in policy debates; social policy; health policy; and women in the cabinet, the Congress, and the judiciary.

Book excerpt: Despite decades of efforts to promote gender equality, most leadership positions in business, politics, education, and even NGOs are occupied by men, and most people still work in occupations dominated by one sex. This book argues that gender imbalances in leadership and occupations are not simply a moral issue or an economic issue, but a governance issue. Gender imbalances persist in large part because the very people with the authority and influence to do something about them know very little about gender and how it works in their organizations and in society at large. Gender imbalanced governance is an expression of entrenched ideas about masculinity and femininity that lead to poor decision making. Improving the quality of governance requires action to counteract the main justifications for the status quo. Based on interviews and conversations with leaders and managers in Europe and the United States, the book presents seven of the most common explanations for persistent gender imbalances and shows how they are based on common stereotypes and myths about men's and women's abilities and preferences. This book provides a guided tour of current research about gender from a multi-disciplinary perspective. It challenges commonly held assumptions and offers alternative explanations and corresponding principles to guide individual decisions, action, and behaviour toward achieving gender balance.
