Book excerpt: This edited collection describes how the Autonomous Learning Behaviours (ALB) model, formulated by Fennema and Peterson, specifically relates to gender differences in mathematics education, learning and performance. The book provides a background to the debate on gender differences; considers the interactions between internal beliefs and external influences, as well as their effects on learning math; and provides a summary of the latest research relevant to the ALB model. Gender differences in learning mathematics is examined from a variety of perspectives, strengthened by longitudinal studies and a cross-cultural American and Australian perspective..

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Females consistently score lower than males on standardized tests of mathematics - yet no such differences exist in the classroom. These differences are not trivial, nor are they insignificant. Test scores help determine entrance to college and graduate school and therefore, by extension, a person's job and future success. If females receive lower test scores then they also receive fewer opportunities. Why does this discrepancy exist? This book presents a series of papers that address these issues by integrating the latest research findings and theories. Authors such as Diane Halpern, Jacquelynne Eccles, Beth Casey, Ronald Nuttal, James Byrnes, and Frank Pajares tackle these questions from a variety of perspectives. Many different branches of psychology are represented, including cognitive, social, personality/self-oriented, and psychobiological. The editors then present an integrative chapter that discusses the ideas presented and other areas that the field should explore.

Book excerpt: This study examined the relationship between academic domain specific self-concept (specifically mathematical and verbal) and the academic achievement in mathematics and English of young adolescents. Middle school students in grades seven and eight ranging in age from 12 to 15 years completed three subscales of the Self-Description Questionnaire-II (general school, verbal and mathematical self-concept). Results indicated that females displayed lower levels of mathematical self-concept while males displayed lower levels of academic self-concept, verbal self-concept and verbal achievement scores. No significant gender differences were found in mathematics achievement. Educational implications are discussed. (Contains 6 tables.).

Book excerpt: We study the determinants of math achievement among children in early elementary school using data from a unique experiment in which children were randomly assigned to classrooms within schools for four consecutive grades. As a result, each child in our sample was exposed to four separate, orthogonal shocks to the quality of teachers and peers. We first show that there are steep socioeconomic gradients and a substantial boy-girl gap in math test scores. However, among children of mothers with university education, there is no difference in the math achievement of girls and boys. We use the experimental design to test for differences in how boys and girls respond to different measures of the quality of their classrooms, teachers, and peers. We find no evidence of differential responses by gender.

Book excerpt: THE REAL WORLD OF MATHEMATICS, SCIENCE, AND TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION In this Preface, I would like to focus on what I mean by “education” and speak about the models and metaphors that are used when people talk, write, and act in the domain of education. We need to look at the assu- tions and processes that the models and metaphors implicitly and explicitly contain. I feel we should explore whether there is a specific thrust to mat- matics education in the here and now, and be very practical about it. For me education is the enhancement of knowledge and understanding, and there is a strong and unbreakable link between the two. There seems l- tle point in acquiring knowledge without understanding its meaning. Nor is it enough to gain a deep understanding of problems without gaining the appropriate knowledge to work for their solution. Thus knowledge and understanding are each necessary conditions for the process of education, but only when they are linked will the process bear fruit. Only in the b- anced interplay of knowledge and understanding can we expect to achieve genuine education.

Book excerpt: In the educational curriculum of countries the world over, Mathematics is a basic and compulsory subject in many courses of academic studies, from the formative years to the tertiary level. Some contend that the importance of attitude towards mathematics is its connection to achievement; McLeod (1992) found a low but significant correlation between these two factors - thus, more positive attitude may produce a higher level of achievement... There is a school of thought that society in general and girls in particular, consider mathematics as a male domain - that Mathematics is either too mechanical or too technical for girls. Girls are also considered as not being able to think or work scientifically (Agholor, 1993). The failure to make mathematics appealing and safe for ALL is turning the potential for social profit into grave deficit, the cost of which the average taxpayers will bear both financially and socially (Ogden and Germinario, 1988, p. xvii). This book investigates the attitudes of students towards the study of mathematics with the radar on women in particular to ascertain whether indeed their fewer numbers in mathematics is due to stereotyped attitudes and myths.
