Book excerpt: The DGM Indonesia (DGM-I) country project focuses on improving clarity and security of land rights for Indigenous peoples and local communities (IPLCs), as well as improving livelihood opportunities from sustainable forests and land. In implementation since March 2017, with 63 subprojects either in implementation or completed, there are ample opportunities for detailed examination of a particular DGM-I subproject. This can offer insight into whether and how DGM projects are influencing women’s participation and leadership on the ground, and can also provide an indication of the extent to which the project may be influencing broader social and gender norms in Indonesia. In turn, this case study informs the wider line of inquiry of the World Bank DGM & REDD+ Gender Study, which follows a conceptual framework of gender transformative change to analyze the contribution the DGM-I project is making to women's economic achievement, access to and control over productive assets, voice, and agency that support positive changes in women’s leadership and meaningful participation. The conceptual framework for this study follows a stepwise, yet flexible and dynamic, progression toward gender transformative change. The framework begins by assessing the inputs that the DGM project provides to beneficiaries, such as assets, information, skills, and capacity building. This assessment looks at what types of inputs are provided, as well as to whom and how they are provided. Next, we assess through the framework how those inputs have influenced women’s income and assets, and building on that, how women are gaining voice and agency. Next, we assess whether and how those changes in voice and agency are influencing gender norms, attitudes, and perceptions of women and men at multiple levels, from individual to household to community. Finally, we look at whether those shifts have the potential to be sustained beyond the lifetime of the project and influence more formal practices, rules, policies, and laws that treat women in an unequal way.

Book excerpt: The main purposes of this research are to identify and analyse the role of women and men in the forestry sector in Kosovo, and women’s and men’s ownership and use of forests. The report also aims to analyse the gender issues within the institutional policy and legal framework that governs forest management, in order to provide recommendations on how to mainstream gender in forest policies in Kosovo more effectively. The research forms part of a project entitled, “Support to Implementation of the Forest Policy and Strategy in Kosovo” (GCP/KOS/005/FIN) funded by Finland, which aims to increase the forestry sector’s contribution to the national economy through the sustainable use of forest resources, taking into account multipurpose forestry, and the economic, social and environmental benefits of forests, as well as the sector’s contribution to climate change mitigation. The study demonstrates women’s limited access to decision-making and information compared with men, and women’s pen ding property rights. Furthermore, the high unemployment rate is the main obstacle identified by rural community members, especially women. The report also demonstrates the interests of rural women in improving their skills in the collection, processing and marketing of non-wood forest products (NWFPs). Consequently, the report shows the importance of improving women’s access to information, capacity development and decision-making. It concludes by emphasizing that NWFPs have strong potential fo r reducing food insecurity and poverty in the regions of the study, particularly when both women and men are effectively supported.

Book excerpt: This report presents a desk review of the institutional, policy and legal frameworks that govern natural resource management/forest management; it also reviews past and present projects, as well as actual practices, including gender and the role of women in forest management in Uganda. It is part of a project by the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) to carry out research on gender, tenure and community forests in Uganda and Nicaragua. In Uganda, CIFOR collaborated with the School of Forestry, Environment and Geo-informatics of Makerere University and the Association of Uganda Professional Women in Agriculture and Environment (AUPWAE) to implement this research project. The overall goal of the project is to improve women's tenure rights to forests through their increased participation in community forest usergroups with regard both to decision making and livelihood benefits. Objectives The objectives of the study were to: Establish and evaluate the institutional, legal and policy frameworks that govern natural resource management/forest management, including gender and the role of women in forest management. Identify organisational (and other) factors that impede or enhance implementation of these frameworks, and whether and how organisations collaborate. Discover how gender issues are approached at different levels, the extent to which gender features in projects and programmes (particularly those based on natural resources) and the results of these projects. Book excerpt: The term community-based forestry (CBF) refers to a wide variety of forest management strategies. Broadly, CBF is a form of community development based on forest resources which incorporates goals of ecological health, social well being, and economic viability, with an emphasis on participatory process and equity. Conceptual descriptions of CBF define it as an alternative to conventional, scientific forestry and state control of forest resources which emphasizes local, social processes in forest management and utilization. In developing countries, the role of gender has been used as an analytical lens to scrutinize CBF's social objectives, primarily in the context of women's participation. This attention to gender and other social relations has played a minimal role in CBF research in the United States. Additionally, research on CBF in the United States tends to focus primarily on the economic and environmental issues of the western United States. Thus, this study revolves around three related questions. What is CBF in Vermont and what does it mean to participants? How do issues of gender impact and inform the experience of CBF in the context of Vermont? To what extent is CBF gendered? The results of this research are presented in the form of three, interconnected articles. In the first, interview data is interpreted phenomenologically to identify the types of CBF present in Vermont and the meanings that participants ascribe to these initiatives. In the second article, the same interview data is viewed through the lens of gender in order to analyze the extent to which gender impacts CBF in Vermont. In the final article, I draw on feminist theory to construct an argument for the study of CBF as a gendered social movement. The remaining two articles are the result of a two part analysis of interviews conducted with foresters and facilitators actively involved in CBF in Vermont. Combined, these three articles discuss the importance of integrating analyses of the social structure of gender into the study of CBF.

Book excerpt: Abstract from the year 2022 in the subject Environmental Sciences, grade: 90%, language: English, abstract: This paper reviews gender roles in community management of forests across three counties in Kenya namely: Nandi, Uasin Gishu, and Elgeyo Marakwet Counties. It seeks to establish an equilibrium in analyzing the access, use, and management of forest resources by individuals from both sides of the gender divide. This paper primarily investigates the relevant secondary data in line with the operationalization of the theme. It also suggests that these differences may be related to three factors: gender equity in access and dissemination of technology, a labor constraint faced by women, and a possible limitation to women's sanctioning authority. Mixed female and male groups offer an avenue for exploiting the strengths of women and men while tempering their shortcomings.
