Book excerpt: This book explores a century of business development of The South African Life Assurance Company, from a specific local focus to a national conglomerate expanding into global insurance markets. Established as a strategic vehicle to address Afrikaner economic marginalization and abject poverty at the beginning of the twentieth century, Sanlam has displayed both path dependence and a dynamic adaptability to complex changing contexts to become a global player. The strategic convergence of economic empowerment through the mobilization of savings into insurance products, as well as Afrikaner nationalism, assisted this growth. Sanlam has played an a-typical role in the economic empowerment of an ethnic entity through extensive investments into the industrializing South African economy. This strategic diversion created operational limitations that were only resolved early in the twenty-first century. As globalization, financial deregulation, and weakened Afrikaner political and social hegemony manifested, strategic change management relied on the path dependence of empowerment strategies to address new markets with similar needs to those of the early stakeholder market of 1918. The former mutual life office demutualized operations to become a diversified financial services group of companies operating across almost the entire African continent, as well as in India, Malaysia, and the UK. This volume presents a business history of strategic management of an insurance enterprise, and its transformation from a defined cultural context into an international empowerment strategy through innovation on all levels of business operation and organization. Book excerpt: HIGH ELECTRICAL RESISTANT MATERIALS The book describes how the utilization of high-carbon slag/pond ash/fly ash for making value-added ceramics is useful for the electrical sectors. Since waste materials are currently endangering our environment, ways of utilizing them have become a global challenge. Currently, R&D work is being carried out to utilize these materials for producing value-added products. This book details the investigations to utilize fly ash (FA) and pond ash (PA) - both waste materials from thermal power plants - with high-carbon ferrochrome (HCFC) slag (by-product of the ferrochrome industry), for producing a novel material for ceramics. Kaolin/K-feldspar is mixed with PA/HCFC slag to produce ceramics with the formation of mullite. The FA/PA/HCFC slag-based ceramics can replace porcelain-based ceramics, and some permanent ceramic structures can be constructed with such wastes. Properties and structures made with ceramics are found to be comparable with those made with porcelain-based ceramics. Performances of these materials above ambient temperature have been evaluated and results indicate the possible replacement of porcelain with these newly invented ceramics. Audience The book will be used by electrical and civil engineers in the electrical, construction, and ceramic industries as well as the industrial waste sector. Researchers in materials science, structural, civil and electrical engineering, environmental science, and ceramic engineering, will also have high interest.

Book excerpt: This book compares sources of worker and employer power in Germany, South Africa, and the United States in order to identify the sources of comparative U.S. decline in union power and to more precisely analyze the nature of labor-movement power. It finds that this power is not confined to allied parties, union confederations, or strikes, but rather consists of the capacity to autonomously translate power from one context to the next. By combining their product, labor market, and labor law advantages through their dominant employers' associations, leading firms are able to impose constraints on labor's free collective bargaining regionally and nationally, defeating employer interests that are more amenable to labor in the process. Through an examination of these patterns of interest organization, the book shows, however, that initial employer advantages prove to be contingent and unstable and that employers are forced to cede to more far-reaching demands of increasingly organized workers.
