Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States is an immigrant country. Germany is not. This volume shatters this widely held myth and reveals the remarkable similarities (as well as the differences) between the two countries. Essays by leading German and American historians and demographers describe how these two countries have become to have the largest number of immigrants among advanced industrial countries, how their conceptions of citizenship and nationality differ, and how their ethnic compositions are likely to be transformed in the next century as a consequence ofmigration, fertility trends, citizenship and naturalization laws, and public attitudes.

Book Synopsis Return Migration and Regional Development in Europe by : Robert Nadler
Download or read book Return Migration and Regional Development in Europe written by Robert Nadler and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assesses recent migration patterns in Europe, which have significantly included 'return migration' against the stream of East-West migration. Since the Eastern enlargement of the EU, many regions of Central and Eastern European have experienced a loss of human resources in core industries, raising concerns about social, economic and territorial cohesion in the region. The success rates of national and regional governmental policy aiming to retain or re-attract skilled workers have been variable, yet return migration has emerged as a major element of migration flows. Bringing together leading researchers on this important topic in contemporary European geography, the contributors analyse a series of key issues. These include: theoretical frameworks in the field of return migration; the nexus between return migration and regional development; the effects of the global and European crisis on emigration and return migration; non-economic motivations for emigration and return; the intergenerational character of return migration, and; the reintegration of return migrants into post-socialist societies. Taken together, the chapters see return migrants as important agents of change, innovation and economic growth. The book will be of great interest for scholars and students of human, economic and political geography.

Timmons, Harvard Business School "A well-written & practical book designed to aid persons contemplating an entrepreneurial venture. Timmons, a specialist in entrepreneurship, has done an excellent job covering the field. Starting with a broad overview of what entrepreneurship is, he concludes with an assessment aimed at summing up the strengths & weaknesses of a new enterprise in advance. In between, he provides sound advice on necessary managerial skills; how to form, build, & reward a new venture team; planning & goal-setting; & the pros & cons of family businesses. Particular attention is also given to the need for ethical standards. Recommended." -- Library Journal. "A close look at the psychology of the entrepreneur & how that type of personality reacts with people & the world at large. Timmons does a good job of exploding myths & misconceptions, offering a wealth of insight into success, failure, & the hard work it takes to succeed in starting up a business or taking over the reins of an established or family-owned enterprise. The pitfalls of entrepreneurial life are analyzed, but more importantly, the positive attributes of the entrepreneur are emphasized. Numerous real-life case studies supplement the coverage." -- Booklist.

Download or read book UNESCO science report written by UNESCO and published by UNESCO Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-09 with total page 818 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are fewer grounds today than in the past to deplore a North‑South divide in research and innovation. This is one of the key findings of the UNESCO Science Report: towards 2030. A large number of countries are now incorporating science, technology and innovation in their national development agenda, in order to make their economies less reliant on raw materials and more rooted in knowledge. Most research and development (R&D) is taking place in high-income countries, but innovation of some kind is now occurring across the full spectrum of income levels according to the first survey of manufacturing companies in 65 countries conducted by the UNESCO Institute for Statistics and summarized in this report. For many lower-income countries, sustainable development has become an integral part of their national development plans for the next 10–20 years. Among higher-income countries, a firm commitment to sustainable development is often coupled with the desire to maintain competitiveness in global markets that are increasingly leaning towards ‘green’ technologies. The quest for clean energy and greater energy efficiency now figures among the research priorities of numerous countries. Written by more than 50 experts who are each covering the country or region from which they hail, the UNESCO Science Report: towards 2030 provides more country-level information than ever before. The trends and developments in science, technology and innovation policy and governance between 2009 and mid-2015 described here provide essential baseline information on the concerns and priorities of countries that could orient the implementation and drive the assessment of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the years to come.
