Book excerpt: In 2011, Mr. Kapil the Brand Manager of GEF was reviewing the launch of the recently introduced (February 2010) refined vegetable cooking oil brand, Freedom Refined Sunflower Oil, in Andhra Pradesh to prepare a marketing plan for the coming year. The brand was introduced by GEF, a company set up in 2009 by an entrepreneur, in Andhra Pradesh. The company itself was set up with considerable investment in plant and machinery. The brand was introduced with a little market research and considerable promotion and distribution expenditure. The launch results showed that the brand had done very well and surpassed the sales targets set for the first year of introduction. The Brand manager was planning a market research study to understand the brand health for deciding the future course of action. The case describes the edible oil industry in India and AP; setting up and initial thinking about the strategy of GEF and branding; some research done to decide the critical differentiating elements of marketing plan (name, packaging, and advertising) and the marketing plan for the brand. The case also provides information about the performance of the brand since the launch till the end of the year 2010. The task for the student is to evaluate the strategy, the launch marketing plan and think about the future research needs for deciding the marketing strategy and plan for the next year.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores ways in which India can negotiate the low carbon path up until 2030, when it is expected to be the largest economy after the US and China. It comprehensively reviews the low climate pathways for India and provides a guide to the pathways that the country can adopt. India’s population, energy demands and emissions will increase significantly, and the challenge is to restrict its CO2 emissions and walk the low carbon path. Through its Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs), India has pledged to reduce its emissions significantly. Addressing the question of which low carbon paths India can adhere to without compromising its growth, the book identifies the key factors that feed into existing models of climate change and discusses the cost of action versus inaction. It also examines key issues concerning India’s environment through the lens of the transport, industry and water sectors. The book concludes by looking at policy implications for low carbon growth in India.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evaluation is increasingly important for finding sustainable solutions for the people and the planet, based on a systematic analysis of what works, for whom, and under what circumstances, and to contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, as they pertain to the environment. This book explores why the Global Environment Facility (GEF) invests in evaluation for accountability and learning to inform its decision-making on programming priorities, and how this leads to wiser funding decisions and better program performance on the ground. The book is based on real-life experiences of how to make evaluation count for international environmental action. Drawing upon comprehensive evaluations of the GEF, it provides unique insights from authors responsible for designing, implementing, and disseminating the findings of the evaluations. No other multilateral development or environment agency places evaluation fully at the center of their decision-making. The book outlines the trends in the global environment and the changing landscape of international environmental finance. It defines the role of the GEF and explains its institutional framework and the unique partnership that involves donor and recipient countries, multilateral development banks, UN agencies, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and national agencies in the developing countries. Further, it provides useful pointers to other organizations wishing to enhance evidence-based decision-making for improving their relevance, performance, and impact. The book will be most suitable for graduate-level, specialized study in a variety of disciplines such as environmental and development economics, political science, international relations, geography, sociology, and social anthropology. Book excerpt: Environmental Management, with few exceptions, is not taught in colleges, universities, technical and management institutions. The result is that the students of these institutions lack knowledge and sensitisation to environmental issues. They lack the awareness of environmental consequences of human actions. To fill this void, Environmental Management is timely. The book provides background material to various environmental problems. It surveys a range of topics from sustainable development and ecological imperatives to strategies for managing environmental issues. The problem of pollution, waste management, biological diversity and forest management have been analysed in the light of laws and international conventions and treaties. The book brings out the realities about the damage being inflicted on the environment and our exploitive attitude to nature. It concludes with discussion and debate about values in nature and touches upon the subject of metamorphosis of the whole trajectory of attitudes in modern societies.

Book excerpt: This study analyzes the interrelationship between local benefits and global environment benefits in the Global Environment Facility (GEF) strategies and projects in order to: Enhance GEF policies, strategies, and project design and implementation so these can effectively promote the potential for local gains in those global environmental programs where actors need to be mobilized for long-term support of sound environmental management, costs incurred by local communities for supplying global environmental goods need to be reduced, and possible negative impacts need to be ameliorated. Strengthen GEF monitoring and evaluation policies and processes to develop indicators for, and enhance the tracking of, local benefits and negative impacts. Expand the body of existing operational knowledge of good practices and experiences germane to pursuing global environmental issues and of constraints or fallacies to be avoided in operations. Disseminate widely the most valuable lessons of existing experience and show how these lessons can be implemented in future GEF operations.
