The text describes gear groups, tooth forms, and gear materials. Heat treatment of steels, casehardening, nitriding, induction hardening, sulfinuzing, and flame hardening are explained. The book takes a look at blank manufacture, gear milling, and gear shaping and planning. The text further examines gear hobbing. Topics include precision of hobbing machines, worm-wheel hobbing, hob setting, control of accuracy of gears, and hobbing gears for general purposes. The different kinds of hobs, profile grinding, and shaving and lapping are also discussed. The book also focuses on other manufacturing methods, such as thread whirling, broaching gear teeth, tooth rounding, work hardening, and electrochemical machining. The text is a vital source of data for readers interested in gear making.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the automotive and aerospace industries, the need for strong yet light materials has given rise to extensive research into aluminum and magnesium alloys and formable titanium alloys. All of these are categorized as light weight materials. The distinguishing feature of light weight materials is that they are low density, but they have a wide range of properties and, as a result, a wide range of applications. This book provides researchers and students with an overview of the recent advancements in light weight material processing, manufacturing and characterization. It contains chapters by eminent researchers on topics associated with light weight materials, including on the current buzzword “composite materials”. First, this book describes the current status of light weight materials. Then, it studies applications of these materials, given that, as the densities vary, so do the applications, ranging from automobiles and aviation to bio-mechatronics. This book will therefore serve as an excellent guide to this field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although gears have been indispensable components in various sectors such as mechanical engineering, automotive engineering and industrial gear manufacturing for many decades, increasing requirements and current market developments are constantly presenting the transmission technology industries with new challenges. In modern gear transmissions, competition, besides the price, is determined by load-carrying capacity, operational reliability and noise excitation behavior. In the automotive industry in particular, reliable transmissions with high power density, low weight and minimal noise emissions are required. The current trend towards e-mobility, as well as general ecological and economical challenges to improve resource efficiency, lead to increased demands on gear quality and surface finish. In this context, the finishing and quality inspection of gears take on central roles. As the finishing of gears has a significant influence on their operational behavior, the reliability of the processes must be continuously ensured with regard to a high quality of the work result. Therefore, at this year's Aachen Forum on Gear Production, which is organized hand in hand by the WZL of RWTH Aachen University and the Research Association Transmission Technology (FVA), the focus is on finishing processes and quality inspection of gears. The spectrum of topics ranges from process and tool design in line with requirements to the manufacturing of individual gear geometries and measures for continuous quality assurance. Aspects of modern finishing processes for the generation of superfinished surfaces, quality inspection during production, and the economic efficiency of production and application are presented. The objective of the Aachen Forum on Gear Production is an exchange of knowledge and experience between engineers who are employed or have responsibility in the design, development, production, assembly, and application of gear drives. The individual technical presentations feature both manufacturers of machines and tools as well as users who report on their own practical experience. In addition, there are interesting presentations by research experts.

Book excerpt: This is the first book to offer a complete presentation of bevel gears. An expert team of authors highlights the areas of application for these machine elements and presents the geometrical features of bevel gears as well as the various gear cutting processes based on gear cutting theory. The aspect of three-dimensional gearing is assessed in detail in terms of flank design, load capacity and noise behavior. A representation of production processes with the required technologies provides a knowledge base on which sound decisions can be based. The authors offer a thorough introduction to the complex world of bevel gears and present the rapid advances of these machine elements in a detailed, comprehensible manner. This book addresses design engineers in mechanical engineering and vehicle manufacturing, as well as producers of bevel gears and students in mechanical engineering.

Book excerpt: This work describes an experimental investigation with the aim to evaluate and establish wire spark erosion machining (WSEM) as a viable alternative for high quality miniature gear manufacturing. External spur type miniature brass (ASTM 858) gears with 12 teeth, 9.8 mm outside diameter and 5 mm face width were manufactured by WSEM. The research work was accomplished in four distinct experimental stages viz., preliminary, pilot, main and confirmation. The aim, scope and findings of each stage are progressively presented and discussed. In essence, the investigation found that it was possible to manufacture miniature gears to high quality by using WSEM. Gears up to DIN 5 quality with a good surface finish (1.2 μm average roughness) and satisfactory surface integrity were achieved. The results suggest that WSEM should be considered a viable alternative to conventional miniature gear manufacturing techniques and that in some instances it may even be superior. This work will prove useful to researchers and professionals in the field of miniature and micro-scale manufacturing and machining.
