Book excerpt: Eric Bentley's graceful look at George Bernard Shaw was first published over 50 years ago, and time has only strengthened the conviction of his ideas and arguments about Shaw. When it arrived in the late 1940's, this book was hailed by the great poet William Carlos Williams as "the best treatise on contemporary manners I think I have ever read. I was fascinated and rewarded in the depths of my soul." Even Shaw himself described the book as "the best critical description of my public activities I have yet come across."

Particularly useful features include “Practice Pointers” highlighting crucial information for a disorder and bold-faced “Alerts” from experienced practitioners. The book also describes 19 procedures commonly used within the office or clinic setting. More than 140 Patient Teaching Guides are included (perforated for ease of use) as well as in digital format for customizing and printing. Book excerpt: Sayings of Gorakhnath presents a translation of late-medieval texts in Old Hindi, traditionally attributed to one of the founders of the Order of Nath Yogis. The Naths are associated with the creation and development of hatha yoga, with important historical and ideological links to Hindu tantra and alchemy. The texts gathered in this collection on the one hand provide a criticism of religious authority based on external knowledge lacking personal experience, while on the other hand they celebrate the path of yoga and its methods of engagement with the subtle body and its centres of occult energy and miraculous powers. The ultimate goal of the style of yoga described in the Sayings of Gorakhnath concerns the attainment of immortality and divinization of its adepts. This is achieved by redirecting the trajectory of the seminal fluid, which in the process transforms into the elixir, the amrt. In order to accomplish that goal, a regime of yogic practices is suggested, consisting of the assumption of a steady posture, breathing exercises, mantra chanting, and meditation. Djudjevic and Singh's translations are preceded by an introduction and accompanied by notes, which contextualize and elucidate the subject matter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bernard Shaw fashioned public images of himself that belied the nature and depth of his emotional experiences and the complexity of his intellectual outlook. In this absorbing biography, noted Shavian authority A. M. Gibbs debunks many of the elements that form the foundation of Shaw's self-created legend--from his childhood (which was not the loveless experience he claimed publicly), to his sexual relationships with several women, to his marriage, his politics, his Irish identity, and his controversial philosophy of Creative Evolution. Drawing on previously unpublished materials, including never-before-seen photographs and early sketches by Shaw, Gibbs offers a fresh perspective and brings us closer than ever before to the human being behind the masks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pain is a common symptom of many diseases and is often referred for a physical medicine and rehabilitation consultation. Despite the availability of information on the pathophysiology, assessment, and management of acute musculoskeletal pain, chronic pain still remains an unsolved problem for many patients. Pathophysiology in these patients often remains obscure, assessment difficult, and management frustrating. These issues become magnified when pain, acute or chronic, complicates a primary disabling disease such as spinal cord injury, cerebrovascular accident or multiple sclerosis. To date, the physiatric management of these complex syndromes has not been dealt with in a comprehensive fashion, especially with regard to the relationship of pain, functional status, and quality of life in these patients. Pain Management in Rehabilitation provides a single source that synthesizes information about the diagnosis and management of various pain syndromes in patients with primary disabling diseases. It discusses pain as it relates to various disease processes from the perspective of both rehabilitation specialists and primary care providers. It describes pain syndromes, their assessment and management, in some of the most common impairments seen in a rehabilitation setting. Relevant literature is reviewed, with emphasis on assessment and physiatric management. This valuable text is an unparalleled guide to the successful management of pain in persons with a primary disabling disease, with the goal of preventing physiological and functional decline and the improvement of functional abilities, which in turn lead to enhanced psychosocial functioning and quality of life.
