Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gazetteer of the Bombay Presidency, 1885, Vol. 18: Part II., Poona In the Dash or eastern plain, where the south-west rain is light and uncertain, the early or khan] harvest is less important than in the west. The chief early cro s are spiked millet or be ri mixed with the hardy tar and early In iau millet or °vairi. Hese are sown in late May or in June on the first so cient rainfall. In good ears they ripen in late September and October; in bad years not ti 1 November. When the early crops are reaped in September and where the land permits, a second or duscia crop is raised. As, after October, rain rarely falls in the hilly west, except a little wheat grown on the eastern fringe, the late or rabi dry-crop harvest is of comparatively little im ortance. In the east of the district which is within the range of t e north-east rains, the late or rabi harvest is more important than the early harvest. There the late crops are sown in October and November and ripen in February and March. They are chiefl sheila and other cold-weather Indian millets and gram, lentils, andy other pulses. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As an invitation to interrogate the secular modality of art, the book unsettles both the categories of 'art' and 'secular' in their theoretical and historical implications. It questions the temporal, spatial and cultural binaries between the 'sacred' and the 'secular' that have shaped art historical scholarship as well as artistic practice. All the essays here are anchored in a conception of a region, whether we call it South Asia or the Indian subcontinent - one, fissured by histories of partition, state formations and religious nationalisms, but still offering a collective site from which to speak to the disciplines of art and the knowledge worlds in which they are embedded. The book asks: How do we complicate the religious designations of pre-modern art and architecture and the new forms of their resurgence in contemporary iconographies and monuments? How do we re-conceptualize the public and the political, as fiery contestations and new curatorial practices reconfigure the meaning of art in the proliferating spaces of museums, galleries, biennales and festivals? How do we understand South Asian art's deep entanglements with the politics of the present?ing spaces of museums, galleries, biennales and festivals? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India and the subcontinent stimulated the curiosity of the British who came to India as traders. Each aspect of life in India - its people, customs, geography, climate, fauna and flora - was documented by British travelers, traders, administrators, soldiers to make sense to the European mind. As they 'discovered' India and occupied it, they also attempted to 'civilise' the natives. The present volumes focus on select aspects of the imperial archives: the accounts of “discovery” and exploration – fauna and flora, geography, climate – the people of the subcontinent, English domesticity and social life in the subcontinent, the wars and skirmishes – including the “Mutiny” of 1857-58 – and the “civilisational mission”. Volume 4 Rebellions and Wars is a collection of accounts of a very different British life in India: as prisoners, under siege and in conditions of war. The British ascendancy in India did not proceed smoothly, and colonisation was always a militarised zone of interest, action and process.
