Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The following proceedings contains most of the contributions given at Orbis Scientiae 1981. As has become customary during the past few years, the organizers and moderators have attempted to strike a balance between reviews of the status of experimental and theoretical developments during the preceding year. We are very pleased that experimentalists representing the critical developments in new accelerator plans, neutrino oscillations, proton decay, and decay schemes of the upsilon, have seen fit to enlighten at first hand their theoretical colleagues. We believe that this interaction can be of great benefit to both groups. The reports of theorists on many of the key theoretical advances by the practitioners themselves is a particularly satisfying feature of this series of conferences and is a tribute to the care and wisdom of the session moderators. Although it has not been a customary editorial practice, we feel that it is particularly appropriate to point out that the 1981 recipient of the J. Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Prize was Professor Frederick Reines, of University of California, Irvine, for his pioneering experiments which first experimentally estab lished the existence of the neutrino. The flurry of activit- experimental and theoretical - generated by recent evidence for massive neutrinos is amply reflected in the contents of this volume. The enthusiasm and skill of Mrs. Helga S. Billings and Mrs. Susan L. Maxon in the organization and the running of the con ference, as well as in the preparation of these proceedings, is gratefully acknowledged.

Book Synopsis Gauge Theories in Particle Physics: A Practical Introduction, Fourth Edition - 2 Volume set by : Ian J.R. Aitchison
Download or read book Gauge Theories in Particle Physics: A Practical Introduction, Fourth Edition - 2 Volume set written by Ian J.R. Aitchison and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-01-14 with total page 979 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth edition of this well-established, highly regarded two-volume set continues to provide a fundamental introduction to advanced particle physics while incorporating substantial new experimental results, especially in the areas of CP violation and neutrino oscillations. It offers an accessible and practical introduction to the three gauge theories included in the Standard Model of particle physics: quantum electrodynamics (QED), quantum chromodynamics (QCD), and the Glashow-Salam-Weinberg (GSW) electroweak theory. In the first volume, a new chapter on Lorentz transformations and discrete symmetries presents a simple treatment of Lorentz transformations of Dirac spinors. Along with updating experimental results, this edition also introduces Majorana fermions at an early stage, making the material suitable for a first course in relativistic quantum mechanics. Covering much of the experimental progress made in the last ten years, the second volume remains focused on the two non-Abelian quantum gauge field theories of the Standard Model: QCD and the GSW electroweak theory. A new chapter on CP violation and oscillation phenomena describes CP violation in B-meson decays as well as the main experiments that have led to our current knowledge of mass-squared differences and mixing angles for neutrinos. Exploring a new era in particle physics, this edition discusses the exciting discovery of a boson with properties consistent with those of the Standard Model Higgs boson. It also updates many other topics, including jet algorithms, lattice QCD, effective Lagrangians, and three-generation quark mixing and the CKM matrix. This revised and updated edition provides a self-contained pedagogical treatment of the subject, from relativistic quantum mechanics to the frontiers of the Standard Model. For each theory, the authors discuss the main conceptual points, detail many practical calculations of physical quantities from first principles, and compare these quantitative predictions with experimental results, helping readers improve both their calculation skills and physical insight.
Book Synopsis Gauge Theories Of Strong, Weak, And Electromagnetic Interactions by : Chris Quigg
Download or read book Gauge Theories Of Strong, Weak, And Electromagnetic Interactions written by Chris Quigg and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-12-13 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph presents a coherent and elementary introduction to Gauge theories of the fundamental interactions and their applications to high-energy physics. It deals with the logic and structure of local Gauge symmetries and Gauge theories, from quantum electrodynamics through unified theories of the interactions among leptons and quarks. Many explicit calculations provide the reader with practice in computing the consequences of these theories and offer a perspective on key experimental investigations. First published in 1983, this text is ideal for a one-semester course on Gauge theories and particle physics. Specialists in particle physics and others who wish to understand the basic ideas of Gauge theories will find it useful as a reference and for self-study.
Book Synopsis Gauge Theory of Weak Decays by : Andrzej J. Buras
Download or read book Gauge Theory of Weak Decays written by Andrzej J. Buras and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-07-02 with total page 739 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The ultimate question of elementary particle physics is: What is the fundamental Lagrangian of nature surrounding us? The Lagrangian of the SM is very successful in describing nature at the currently available energy range. The discovery of the Higgs boson completed the particle spectrum of the SM and it is another proof of how well the SM works. Nevertheless the SM cannot be the end of the story and it is for sure not the fundamental Lagrangian of nature. The Lagrangian of the SM looses its validity at the latest at the Planck scale where gravitational effects become noticeable. Most physicists think of the SM as an effective theory that has to be replaced by a more fundamental theory above the TeV scale. What the word effective really means will hopefully be clear at later stages of our book. For the time being we will list some problems and open questions of the SM"--
Book Synopsis Gauge Theories of Weak Interactions by : J. C. Taylor
Download or read book Gauge Theories of Weak Interactions written by J. C. Taylor and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1976-02-12 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interaction between neutrinos and matter is an example of the type classified as weak, and such interactions also allow many elementary particle decays and the beta decay of the nuclei. The development of gauge theories has provided the basis for a complete and consistent account of weak interactions, at the same time displaying their unity with electromagnetism. Gauge theories in this context were first proposed in 1967. Rapid mathematical development took place from 1971, and on this book's publication in 1979, a moderate amount of empirical verification had been achieved.
