Book excerpt: A numerical simulation of the aerothermal characteristics of a gas turbine engine test cell is presented. The three-dimensional system is modeled using the PHOENICS computational fluid dynamics code. Results predict the velocity field, temperatures, pressures, kinetic energy of turbulence, and dissipation rates of turbulent kinetic energy. Numerical results from two versions, a cartesian coordinate model and a body fitted coordinate model, are compared to experimental data. The comparison shows good quantitative and very good qualitative agreement, suggesting that numerical modeling would be useful in the preliminary design of gas turbine test facilities.

Book excerpt: This SAE Aerospace Information Report (AIR) has been written for individuals associated with ground level testing of turbofan and turbojet engines, and particularly for those who might be interested in investigating steady-state performance characteristics of a new test cell design or of proposed modifications to an existing test cell by means of numerical modeling and simulation. It is not the intent of this standard to provide specific test cell design recommendations, which are covered in the reference documentation. As a complement to AIR4827, this document presents best practices in the domain of numerical aerodynamic analysis tools for determining enclosed test cell aerodynamic performance. Correlated and compared to experimental systems, numerical tools represent an ideal way to reinforce the confidence in predicted performance while allowing for more cost effective and timely aerodynamic analysis.

Book excerpt: This document describes a recommended practice and procedure for the trending of parameters to maintain the test cell correlation status. Trending is performed to monitor test cells for changes that can affect engine performance or the data acquired from engine tests. The FAA has issued Advisory Circular, AC43-207, on December 26, 2002 that recommends a 7 year re-correlation, trending or periodic checks. The FAA, AC43-207 bases their recommendation on the SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) 741 rev. B (or latest revision). This document describes a recommended practice and procedure for the trending of parameters to maintain the test cell correlation status. Trending is performed to monitor test cells for changes that can affect engine performance or the data acquired from engine tests. Over time the quality of the acceptance test data for an engine can be affected by the test cell environment. This could lead to unanticipated and expensive results of either accepting a poor performing engine or rejecting a good performing engine. The use of trending the data for engine acceptance can avoid such costly errors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economics of thermal energy recovery in jet engine test cells is examined. A numerical model to simulate the test cell augmenter tube is developed. This model is employed to determine the feasibility of installing heat exchangers along the augmenter or at the augmenter exit and using these heat exchangers to generate steam or electricity from the thermal energy in the jet exhaust. In general, energy recovery is not practical. The exhaust is quickly diluted by the entrained augmentation air, decreasing temperature gradients necessary for heat transfer. Most test cells are used too infrequently to warrant the cost of the hardware. (Author).

Book excerpt: This paper describes a recommended practice and procedure for the correlation of test cells that are used for the performance testing of APU (auxiliary power unit) engines. Test cell correlation is performed to determine the effect of any given test cell enclosure and equipment on the performance of an engine relative to the baseline performance of that engine. The baseline performance is generally determined at the OEM designated test facility. The SAE EG-1E committee is composed of a cross section of representatives from OEMs, commercial users, repair stations and military depots. Based on the inputs from representatives of these various areas of interest, it was concluded that there was a need for a standardized procedure for correlating an APU gas turbine test cell. This paper represents the committee's best effort to satisfy the interest of all parties concerned and arrive at a valid realistic correlation procedure. It is the belief of the committee members that this document meets that objective.

Book excerpt: This SAE Aerospace Information Report (AIR) provides a review of real-time modeling methodologies for gas turbine engine performance. The application of real-time models and modeling methodologies are discussed. The modeling methodologies addressed in this AIR concentrate on the aerothermal portion of the gas turbine propulsion system. Characteristics of the models, the various algorithms used in them, and system integration issues are also reviewed. In addition, example cases of digital models in source code are provided for several methodologies. This document has been updated to include an advancement in aerothermodynamic real time model transient simulation methodology. In recent years, there has been an emphasis on using a single model for both non-real-time and real-time simulation, without any loss in accuracy and without the extra software maintenance efforts associated with having a separate real-time model. Discussion of a method to optimize the equation structure of the non-real-time aerothermal model for real-time execution is included.

Book excerpt: A computer program (written in FORTRAN for a CDC 6600) was developed to predict the plume opacity of jet engine test cells. The data input required for the model includes: the particle density, concentration, and size distribution in the exhaust gas, and the effective stack diameter. Previous data obtained for J-57 engines were used to test the model, and the difference between the theoretical and measured transmittance was generally within one percent. The program also predicts the theoretical effect of using electrostatic precipitators or venturi scrubbers to treat the exhaust emissions. These predictions indicate that control devices larger than the test cells would have to be installed to even achieve a minimal effect on the observed visibility. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gas turbine test facility air system has been designed to meet specified design objectives. An analytical evaluation was performed on the air system design to verify that these design objectives were achieved. A key element of the air system is an exhaust eductor which was included in the design to provide secondary cooling air flow through the engine test cell. Two analytical models were developed to evaluate exhaust eductor performance. A one-dimensional, incompressible eductor model was developed that predicts the basic eductor performance parameters including the amount of secondary air flow drawn through the engine test cell for varying eductor configurations. This model also predicts overall air system performance parameters. An eductor computational fluid dynamics analytical model was developed that provides a more detailed analysis of the flow in the eductor.
