Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gas, Gasoline and Oil Engines: Including Complete Gas Engine Glossary AS the soot and monoxide have a calorific value it is evident that much of the heat Of the fuel is wasted if they are exhausted from the cylinder without further burning at the end of the stroke. To gain every possible heat unit it is necessary to fur: nish sufficient oxygen or air to reduce the fuel to its lowest state. As the free oxygen and nitrogen contained in the fuel are without fuel value, their rejection from the cylinder oc casions no loss except for that heat which they take from the cylinder by virtue Of their high temperature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gas, Petrol, and Oil Engine, Vol. 2 The first volume of the new edition of this work was published in 1909, so that three years have been spent in the preparation of the present volume, which deals with practical problems of design, con struction and operation of Gas, Petrol, and Oil Engines. The author has been fortunate in securing the co-operation of Mr. G. A. Burls, in collecting information and writing the book. Chapters I, II, V and XII are by the author Chapters VII, VIII, IX and XI are by Mr. Burls while Chapters III, IV, VI and X are in great part the work of Mr. Burls. The whole work, however, has been the subject of joint discussion, and the book as it now stands correctly represents the opinions of both writers. The aim throughout all the chapters has been the comparison of early and late constructions and the discussion of various problems which have appeared in the course of the development of the various types of engine since the introduction of the Otto cycle in 1876. Chapters I and II deal broadly with the development of four and two-stroke engines, and describe various difficulties which have been encountered and partially overcome; results of operation are given and various tests are dealt with both in the works and in practical Operation in factories. Chapter III deals with igniting arrangements, and describes and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the different methods used, tracing the development which has demonstrated the supremacy of electrical ignition in its best forms. Chapter IV describes governors and governing methods as practised on the Continent and in England and America. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gas, Gasoline and Oil-Engines, Including Producer-Gas Plants: A New, Complete and Practical Work on Gas, Gasoline, Kerosene, and Crude Petroleum Oil-Engines A book representing and illustrating the details Of design, manufacture, and management Of a new and progressive prime moving power, falls behind its time. By age and therefore needs re arrangement and additions to bring its text and illustrations up to date in all the departments Of such progressive industry. There is probably no more important mechanical industry, involving the production Of motive power for all purposes within the age of steam, than that Of the explosive motor and its far - reach ing effect in the promotion Of industry by a cheap helping hand. SO quickly has this new power expanded to almost universal usefulness as a labor-saving element in the lesser industries, that the literature of the past is found lacking in its up-to - date needs. Progress and improvement are the drift Of genius in this advanced age. The progress made in adapting the use Of crude petroleum as fuel for explosive power, together with the rapid development Of the producer-gas industry, have given a new economy in the production Of power, while the use Of the hitherto neglected gaseous elements Of the blast - furnace and coke manufacture have added new sources Of power production at a nominal cost. With these matters in View the author has revised, rewritten, and added to the contents Of the last edition Of this work such material and ideals that have come to his knowledge as will better represent the latest standards Of construction and Operation Of the explosive motor; to which is included an illustrated chapter on the production Of the new fuel gases and their uses. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gas and Oil Engine In this edition special attention has been paid to the oil engine, in view of its rapid rate of present development and the probability of its very extensive use for many new purposes, such as motor cars. Many engineers are now paying attention to the oil engine, to whom the subject is unfamiliar and in the hope of proving useful to such new men on the work, the author has gone caref'ully into the discussion of the chemical nature of petroleum and the different methods of vaporising heavy oils. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cycles of Gas and Oil Engines The words internal combustion engines contain a fairly approximate descriptive definition of gas, oil, and Spirit engines 3 and for the later period of these motors - for the whole may be conveniently divided into two periods, that before and that subsequent to the introduction of the Otto engines - this title is possibly the best that can be devised, yet as these words will necessarily include gunpowder, gun-cotton, and all similar fulminating engines, it is not sufficiently accurate for a work upon the cycles of these motors. The Editor therefore hopes that this little volume will be especially welcome to non-technical readers who like to keep ahead Of the times in matters Of such universal importance. One chapter deals exclusively with the theory of the gas engine, but the non-technical mind Should have no fear, for mathematics have been as far as possible avoided. It may also serve to dispel wrongful notions concerning the practical limits of the efficiency of gas engines which. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on Modern Gas and Oil Engines IN writing upon the subject of modern gas engines, it may at first be thought that an historical preface is out of place but in glancing through the records of progress made during the last 35 years, it is remarkable how many of the improvements we are apt to regard as new are merely the embodiment of suggestions made by those engaged in bringing the gas engine into practical use. In more than one instance has an important advance been entirely lost sight of until, by more recent investigation, it has been again introduced and submitted to practical tests. These remarks indicate the importance of a concise knowledge of the failures and successes of early inventors, and, if need be, justify the introduction of historical matter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Audels Gas Engine Manual: A Practical Treatise Relating to the Theory and Management of Gas, Gasoline and Oil Engines, Including Chapters on Producer Gas Plants, Marine Motors and Automobile Engines A complete study of the gas engine problem would involve consideration of the two general classes of motors operated by the expansive energy of combustible gases, namely - piston engines with reciprocating action, and turbine engines with rotary motion. Conditions relating to the latter, however, are in such an experimental stage, that very little of practical interest can be stated about them at the present time. On the other hand, the various types of piston engine have been developed to a stage of high efficiency, and, therefore, will be exclusively considered in this work, with occasional references to the other type for the purpose of comparative illustration. The gas engine belongs to the general class of motors which convert natural energy existing in the form of heat into mechanical energy, which is subsequently utilized for the performance st* useful work. These motors are usually called heat engines, and may be divided into two general classes, according to the manner in which the heat is applied to the working substance of the engine, as follows: 1. External combustion engines, driven by the expansive energy of steam or air heated from an external source through the walls of (lie vessel containing the working substance, such as the various types of steam and hot air engines. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gas-Engine a Treatise on the Internal-Combustion Engine Using Gas: Gasoline, Kerosene, Alcohol, or Other Hydrocarbon as Source of Energy When a previous treatise by the author was published under the title of "The Mechanical Engineering of Power Plants," it was suggested by one of his most gifted critics that the title should be amended because the book did not cover the power-plant practice which uses gas-engines. The point was well taken, but the omission was intentional. To have included the gas-engine would have made that book inconveniently bulky. Furthermore, the treatment of the gas-engine must be essentially different from that given to the steam-engine, and at that time the state of the art, both practically and scientifically, did not admit of the preparation of a satisfactory and exhaustive discussion. Since that time, however, there has grown up a largely increased appreciation of the fuel value of what were called the waste gases from the blast-furnace, and a wider extension of the manufacture of fuel gas in producers. The gas-engine has been extensively applied in the departments of electric lighting, and of compression, both of air and gas. It is since that time also that there has appeared the exacting demand for Motors for self-propelled vehicles and for small launches, so that it has become possible to undertake that for which the time was not ripe when the criticism was made. There was, at that time, little distinctively American practice to be studied, but the principal work had been done in England, Germany, and Belgium.
