This book was released on 1988 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents and experimental study conducted to determine a method for analytically detecting and determining trace quantities of diethyl malonate (DEM) in ethyl alcohol using a gas chromatograph equipped with a flame ionization detector. The method developed proved to be effective for determining trace quantities at a concentration (mean) range of 21-840 ng. A linear fit was obtained at this range with an average slope of 1.4032 + or - 0.0063 x 10 to the -7th micro g/au and an intercept of 0.0359 + or - 0.0359 micro g. The correlation coefficient was 0.9996 + or - 0.0009. Based on replicate injections, the accuracy of this method was within + or - 2.4%. Keywords: Chemical analysis, Gas chromatographic method, Diethyl malonate, Ethanol, Ethyl alcohol. (MJM).

Topics discussed include: roasting of peanuts; extrusion of cooking poultry; spray drying of natural flavor materials; cooking rates of foods; gamma radiation of packaging films; stir-frying of sautéd flavors; emulsification properties of egg yolk and lupin proteins; the interaction of flavor compounds with flour, starch, and polysaccharides; factors affecting development of flavor in whisky, wines, fermented products, alcohol precursors, and model food systems; applications of enzymes for production of flavor in fish, lobster and pork; and the development and application of analytical methods for isolation and identification of volatile compounds and flavors from a variety of food products. Information presented in this book will be useful to chemists, scientists, and technologists working in flavor chemistry, food product research and development, and food quality control.

Book excerpt: The characteristics of gas chromatography peaks arising from various compounds when the column flow is reversed has been studied. It is shown that all compounds are eluted after reversal of the flow with the peak maximum at a time equal to or less than the time of flow reversal. The half width of the reverse peak is determined by a constant related to the number of plates in the column, and the square root of twice the time of flow reversal multiplied by the square root of the time of emergence of the compound when run in the forward direction. The method appears applicable to the concentration of trace high boiling impurities in any matrix in which the bulk components can be rapidly eluted through a suitable column.

Book excerpt: Rapid identification and quantitation of blood ethanol by gas chromatography (GC) has been especially useful to the clinical and forensic chemist, particularly as court evidence in prosecuting drunken drivers. Certain identification can be made and concentration determined rapidly by GC. A number of GC methods are available for ethanol determination in biological liquid samples. Currently, advances are being made in the area of vapor phase analysis [1-4]. Direct vapor injections overcome several disadvantages of liquid sample injection. Liquid samples containing sodium fluoride as a preservative tend to etch the syringe. Clotted samples are no longer a problem with vapor injections and frequent cleaning of the syringe is not required. With direct injection of blood or diluted blood samples, special inlets are necessary and must be changed periodically to remove protein and other nonvolatile deposits. In addition, the life of the columns is increased with vapor samples. According to Henry's law, at a given temperature there is a definite ratio between the concentration of ethanol in the blood phase and the air in direct equilibrium with it. Investigators have verified Henry's law [5-10] for both aqueous and blood ethanol solutions. The method described here consists of equilibrating blood with n-propanol as internal standard and injecting the vapors. Because of the internal standard, the volume of the injected sample is no longer a critical quantity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An automated gas chromatography was used to analyze water samples contaminated with trace (parts-per-billion) concentrations of organic analytes. A custom interface introduced the liquid sample to the chromatography. This was followed by rapid chromatographic analysis. Characteristics of the analysis include response times less than one minute and automated data processing. Analytes were chosen based on their known presence in the recycle water streams of semiconductor manufacturers and their potential to reduce process yield. These include acetone, isopropanol, butyl acetate, ethyl benzene, p-xylene, methyl ethyl ketone and 2-ethoxy ethyl acetate. Detection limits below 20 ppb were demonstrated for all analytes and quantitative analysis with limited speciation was shown for multianalyte mixtures. Results are discussed with respect to the potential for on-line liquid process monitoring by this method.
